Weekly Alphabet Challenge 44/52 ~Rule of Thirds
It flowered! A plant given to me by a friend months ago and carefully nurtured by me has flowered for the first time. Exciting!
Thank you to everyone who pauses long enough to look at my photo. All comments and Faves are very much appreciated
For the Macro Monday's theme - Rule
'Rule of thumb' is the idea and I wanted to use a thumb print to convey breaking the law and the red print could also be (pause for tension) blood! I have also used the rule of thirds in the shot. HMM.
are you ready for this?
whaddya mean? it's just a first date.
think, man! what if things get dicey?
um, I dunno.
just remember this: you follow the rules of engagement.
there's rules? for a first date?
she's a woman, ain't she? watch out.
are the rules, you know, effective?
not really, no. but when you're all alone out there on a storm-tossed sea, anything you can grab onto is a comfort.
storm-tossed. . . I'm starting to feel a little queasy.
you can't be too prepared. just sayin'.
maybe I should wear a helmet.
I recommend it. definitely.
Golden Rule...the name of the larger blue boat. Taken in Helvick Pier, a location I have posted images in the past from....and you are likely to see more from here again. A favourite location of mine.

The slide rule, also known colloquially in the United States as a slipstick, is a mechanical analog computer. The slide rule is used primarily for multiplication and division, and also for functions such as exponents, roots, logarithms and trigonometry, but typically not for addition or subtraction. Though similar in name and appearance to a standard ruler, the slide rule is not meant to be used for measuring length or drawing straight lines
Derriford, Plymouth, Devon, UK
Quarter-plate tintype by an anonymous photographer. A lensman captured this Union officer giving the time-honored gesture of derision or disdain. His technique matches an instruction printed in an 1863 issue of the Semi-Weekly Wisconsin of Milwaukee: “Put thumb to nose, and gyrate the extended fingers for a moment.”
Though Oxford Dictionary dates the origin of the phrase to 1854, Newspapers.com reveals examples in England as early as 1840, and the United States in 1841.
One Civil War example involves Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard after the First Battle of Manassas in 1861. As the story goes, a member of the 11th New York Infantry—the rowdy Fire Zouaves—was hauled before the victorious general and “manifested his contempt for that chieftain by putting his thumb to his nose and gyrating with his finger.” The Zouave then kicked and knocked about a few nearby soldiers, challenged Beauregard to a fight, and then took off running. He was soon apprehended and tossed into solitary confinement.
The yarn finishes, “The rebels seem to admire the cool audacity of the chap, and Beauregard laughed heartily at his pranks.”
In a Facebook post on March 19, 2019, John Laking noted, "In England this is called 'cocking a snook ' if he used his left to extend the gesture that would be ' long bacon .'"

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Today, the Federal Railroad Administration released their proposed crew rule. In it, the FRA proposes to regulate the size of crews that must be on most freight trains, requiring that an engineer and a conductor are on the train. It also includes limited exceptions for, and a process to approve, single person operations. This rule is the result of a lot of things, but has been ironically pushed over the finish line by the "precision scheduled railroading" philosophy of "he who shall not be named." PSR has forced Class 1 railroads in a race to the bottom as they instituted leadership teams solely focused on cutting costs, on a blind and dangerous path to where we are now. But they are learning the hard way, as are many American businesses, that it is PEOPLE who make your operation run. And as they struggle to fix the self-inflicted damage, an industry which has gone largely unregulated since the Staggers Act, is facing more (and might I say necessary) scrutiny on their operations. I chose this photo, because it emphasizes the importance of the two-person crew in hard situations, such as a car taking out a crossing gate at a busy intersection in Ashland Virginia: it required signal maintainers, dispatchers, engineers, and conductors to safely coordinate the movement of Q410 (it was Q back when this was taken) through downtown Ashland. It is quite ironic that the philosophy of a man who tried to take the people out of railroading ended up being what drove the government to regulate and require them. It shows what happens when you take a philosophy too far, and become path dependent. The E. Hunter Harrison rule- a legacy to always remember.
The picture on my photostream with the most views is of this little birch tree, taken last June. Despite not adhering to photography rules, it appeared on Explore Front Page and gained over 5,000 views in a very short time. I'm not sure whether this latest capture from last weekend shows an improvement in my skills but at least it shows the changing seasons in Skye.
