My 3 year old daughter Tyrin and her ruby slippers. She's a big fan of Dorothy (wizard of oz). and I'm a big fan of the wicked witch of the west! :D
These socks were knit from my own pattern, which I really don't consider a complete success. I was trying to design something that would work well with handpainted yarns, but I didn't really achieve my desired effect. The stitch pattern I used (I thought it was "Checkered Acre" from Barbara Walker's first stitch dictionary, but upon closer inspection, it's not, so I don't know what the stitch pattern is, except something that I jumbled up) is highly textured. For this reason, I kept the patterning on the leg only, and went with a 3x3 ribbing on the foot. Otherwise, I think the socks would have been terribly uncomfortable in shoes.

05/2010: Normally, I like to change things up a bit when making a cake with the same theme, but I'm in love with this design and couldn't change much...the last one was made several months ago! The cake is all White Almond Velvet with Chocolate Buttercream filling and iced in Vanilla Buttercream. The details were made from gumpaste and then hand-painted. The poppies and yellow brick road are made from fondant. The ruby slippers are gumpaste that was coated in Ruby Red disco dust (IMO, the PERFECT color and sparkle for ruby slippers!) And yes, the cake board is covered in fondant...someone PLEASE remind me how hard that is when I go to do this cake again! :)
So did anyone else have this much fun taking down their Christmas Tree?
A few points to mention. Firstly massive props to Damian in helping me with this shot. We carried the entire Christmas Tree up the stairs fully decorated with lights on and set it up in the spare room. I had the idea for this shot at some stage over Christmas but I hadn't quite worked out the logistics. Given that last night was the Twelfth Night, there was only really one point at which I could nail this so we decided to go for it. Or rather, Damian knew I wanted to do it and kept me motivated and on track.
Interesting sidenotes:
This 366 project has just gone into it's 7th year SEVEN, it was supposed to be wrapped up in ONE!
I had attempted to shoot the entire project on a 50mm prime lens, and this is the first time I strayed from that and used a 16-85mm. The 50mm whilst sharp was just too close, and without the possibility of physically being able to get any further back (without risking the whole composition) I decided to embrace a zoom lens.
This is the second time I have used this title on my Flickr stream. The first time was during the 365 project (you can see that one here that I did manage to complete in one year :)
My sister sent this costume to my daughter Tyanna. Ty loved it so much I think she would have skipped all the way up to Michigan to thank my sister. She had previously given her a stuffed Toto but that was at her mom's house, so "Smiley" graciously filled in for this photo!

So close yet so far away.
The yarn is Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks That Rock in Ruby Slippers. The pattern is Evelyn Clark's Lupine Lace, available from Fiber Trends. The nail polish is OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark. And the PJ bottoms do, in fact, have sock moneys carrying out various scenes on them (thanks Nick & Nora!).
I thought the ugly blue textured wall of my bedroom provided a nice background. God knows it isn't good for much else other than my begging to cover it up with a different colour of paint.
...or is there? I just came from seeing "The Wizard of Oz" for the second time. It's a good one, folks and is only at the Cabaret for a couple more weeks. But, I love Oz. It's a fantasy land where lions talk, scarecrows walk and tin men finally feel their heart beat. A land where munchins dance and sing and a falling house solves all problems.
And I got to thinking: Is there really no place like home? Lately I've not wanted to be at home. I want to be out, out, out and I know that there are phases I go thru like this and it's not that I don't like my house, I do. But there is this desire, maybe a need, to be out and about. Or maybe my house is claustrophobic to me. I'm not really sure. All I know is that once I'm faced with going home, it's hard, really hard, to go there. I think a lot of it has to do with stress at work and that carries on to home and so on and so forth.
Then I go back to Oz and wonder if life truly would be easier there. A land where you have a good witch on your side to protect you from the wicked witch. A place where dumping a bucket of water on the wicked witch makes all your worries disappear and the bad person go away. A place where clicking your heals three times gets you back to the places you desire.
So, where is my "no place like home?"

We walked by a hot dog vendor, and she said she wanted chips. That's when I noticed it was almost 1 o'clock and we still hadn't eaten lunch (except for the Rice Krispies treats that we picked up at Walmart--who knew, they sell them individually wrapped in a box--convenient, if rather unhealthy). I didn't think she'd eat a hot dog, so I asked what she wanted, and she wanted the tiger. Oh, cheetos.
