I love my mother for her sense of what would someday be important to me. She saved my first ballet slippers and tap shoes ... I saved my ruby slippers!
I bet in some long ago time period there was a reason to build a random arch on a path (apart from the delight taken when people bang their heads.)
I think bricks are less the building blocks to civilisation than foundations in compact necessity of erroneous hobo declination

"Ruby Slipper"
Aquavit New York, singed orange rind, lemon juice, and ruby port.
Notes: I brought back a bottle of Aquavit New York for my friend. She got this recipe ("Ruby Slipper") from their website and we decided to try it out while watching the reunion episode of Top Chef Season 4. It made the show a lot more funny for her, than it did for me; I could only take a sip. It was very good. It reminded my friend of sangria. I wouldn't disagree.
This photo gave me fits and by the time I concluded it was flat, under exposed and needed to be trashed, I couldn't quite let go.
So I turned it to a black and white.
Cuz that will fix everything, right? (snort)
This shot has much prettier colors, plus a bit of info which I didn't know:

Next time I go back I'm going to do two things: move and get a different angle of the shoe and have a better understanding of lighting.
Bah.
Hott, right?
On an unrelated note, while taking the train to work this morning, someone said that my moustache was bigger than his dog.
The logical next step in the St. Judy's Cross series. The cross of St. Judy, the patron saint of the lgbt community, is formed of stiletto-heel shoes in rainbow colors with the ruby-hued shoe featured prominently. St. Judy protects from persecution for sexual orientation and helps one to find true love and a home.

My mom is a great needle & fiber artist. She made these Ruby Slippers (she is a big Wizard of Oz fan), and they were on display at the airport as we came back in from our vacation.
The new display case for the Ruby Slippers makes for a much better photo than how it used to be!
This photo was used with my permission on this interesting blog about Wizard of Oz and the ruby slippers:

These socks were knit from my own pattern, which I really don't consider a complete success. I was trying to design something that would work well with handpainted yarns, but I didn't really achieve my desired effect. The stitch pattern I used (I thought it was "Checkered Acre" from Barbara Walker's first stitch dictionary, but upon closer inspection, it's not, so I don't know what the stitch pattern is, except something that I jumbled up) is highly textured. For this reason, I kept the patterning on the leg only, and went with a 3x3 ribbing on the foot. Otherwise, I think the socks would have been terribly uncomfortable in shoes.

05/2010: Normally, I like to change things up a bit when making a cake with the same theme, but I'm in love with this design and couldn't change much...the last one was made several months ago! The cake is all White Almond Velvet with Chocolate Buttercream filling and iced in Vanilla Buttercream. The details were made from gumpaste and then hand-painted. The poppies and yellow brick road are made from fondant. The ruby slippers are gumpaste that was coated in Ruby Red disco dust (IMO, the PERFECT color and sparkle for ruby slippers!) And yes, the cake board is covered in fondant...someone PLEASE remind me how hard that is when I go to do this cake again! :)
