Among hotels in Centralia, Washington, The Olympic Club Hotel's legend looms large. Here you'll find a historic building – filled with warm woods and period details – steeped in colorful tales of countless gamblers' jackpots, revenuer raids, dark secrets deeply buried, and a famous bandit's bravado.
The Olympic Club Hotel has been a point of power, intrigue and contention since opening in 1908. Its name evokes heroic gods of ancient Herculean characters, the exploits of whom are now the stuff of modern legend.
Remarkably, the Olympic Club Hotel remains virtually unchanged from the time of its opulent remodel in 1913. Still much in evidence is the building's blend of sophisticated finery and earthy extravagance. Its magnificent mahogany bar and leaded-glass canopies are as impressive as the colossal Round Oak wood stove, elegant women's bathroom and mammoth porcelain urinals, (hey, they spared no expense in those bygone days!).
The hotel's 27 guest rooms feature vintage furnishings, comfy chenille-covered beds and conveniently located private common bathrooms. You may hear the lonely, soulful sound of the trains from your room as they roll through Centralia – but if you'd prefer not to, earplugs are provided. Each room here is named for the colorful and worthy cast of characters who have left their mark on this place – the internationally notorious "gentleman train robber" Roy Gardner who was captured at the hotel back in 1921; Gertrude Howell, the hotel's first female proprietor who also identified Gardner; and Jack Sciutto, the Oly Club's original proprietor who was crowned "King of Bootleggers."
As refined as the Olympic Club Hotel may have been portrayed, especially in its early years, the place has always possessed an element of the Old West with stories of train robbers and ladies of the evening who took up residency on the second floor. Known as a true "gentleman's resort" the opulent furnishings of mahogany paneling, Tiffany-style lights, ceramic-tiled floors and Belgian crystal lured a good many of the area's loggers, miners and railroad workers through the doors.
McMenamins has expanded upon the Olympic Club Hotel's traditional definition of a workingman's resort by welcoming the whole family to enjoy lodging, meals, movies, art, history, sport and special events. Throughout the Olympic Club historic photographs and extensive original artwork chronicle the building's intriguing history.
CN 2653, CN 5263 and CN 2322 are eastbound with CN 368 on the scenic Lac St-Jean sub on a beautiful but frigid morning.
I have whittled down the supplies to nearly nothing. I have also run outta steam on this one. Sure was fun and amazing to see how different Hannah and I look at the same pile of goodies. I am so very proud of how much Han has grown in her card making. I am also proud to call her friend.
I have a small pile of embellies I made up but with the "plus 1" only rule, I can't get them on a card.

I stretched canvas over a round wooden frame and then painted with acrylic paint. The design was Inspired from pottery found at Sia, New Mexico.
CSXT 7765 is one of two units that CSXT has repainted and affixed a small 'Chessie System' logo on each side of the nose. Here it leads another Dash8-40CW (CSXT 7821) on the wye leading from CN's Kingston Sub to CN's Valleyfield Sub with CN 327.
The third and final part of the afternoon's shunting jigsaw saw PYM deposited at the 'DobiesX2' family bus storage facility, from whence I retrieved their former Crosville Leyland Olympian. GFM 104X is to undergo a makeover to mark it's re-launch into the world of the preserved.
The bus survived the breakers initially by passing from PMT to a Stoke on Trent area dance troupe ... one of the few authorised routes out of 'First' which doesn't spell doom. After serving with them several years it was replaced by something more modern and moved into preservation ... but to an owner who, shortly afterwards, became disillusioned with the bus preservation thing. Salvation came once more as mentioned above for the elderly Olympian from a fellow flickrite husband and wife team so now it's to be made to look like it's loved again!
Currently the bus wears a not quite cunningly modified First scheme but something more appropriate beckons...
The above picture was taken alongside the lake a Madelely (Staffs) where traffic had just been brought to a standstill by two 'scrapping' ducks (!) leaving the road clear for me to obtain this record.

I keep being drawn back to Ferryside in Carmarthenshire, it has great potential for photography. I was there yesterday (25 August 2018) to have possibly my last chance of a HST working the summer dated service to and from Pembroke Dock/London Paddington; the final working this summer is scheduled for 8 September, I am hoping to ride on the train next Saturday and I am unavailable on the final day. It is expected that GWR will have withdrawn their front-line service HSTs by the start of the summer timetable in 2019 and I have been told that the IETs do not 'fit' the Pembroke Dock branch, so this may be the final summer for the Pembroke Coast Express.
