Gacha apples (from Pakistan) are sweet, grainy, with a mild flavor and a thinner skin than most apples. Known for their firmness, crispness, and sweetness. Gacha apples are sweet and aromatic, with a size that fits nicely into a lunchbox. It also works well added in salads, or cooked, and is especially suitable for creating apple based sauces.
It's a quiet night in Manistee Mi where we find 3 of Marquette's four SD40-2's all in for various forms of work.

The "Lofoten 2016"-trip endet today, five years ago but the "Lofoten 2019"-trip started yesterday, five years ago :o)
So I'll now post pictures from two years ago.
I started with a two night stay in Copenhagen (travelled there by train) before I flew to Norway.

This little nugget found a nugget to munch on. This is a baby round-tailed squirrel. It had two other siblings and momma nearby. They were just so dang cute. I had to watch them for a while. A shot I posted with one pestering momma in the comments.
Union Pacific’s Skyline - Los Angeles export coal train squeals around the Barry Curve near Santaquin, Utah on May 21, 1989. Leading the 84-car train are C40-8s No. 9234, 9152, and 9233. New EMD SD60Ms will soon supersede these relatively new GE units on unit coal train movements out of Provo.
We see a whole lot of barns traveling the back roads of Virginia and West Virginia. There aren't too many of the round top version though.

Happy Spring PolaroidWeek 2016!

The most wonderful time of the year! And it comes twice a year! :)
However, it's a very busy week for me so I'll apologize in advance for not being able to keep up with the pool and all the goings on this Polaroid Week. I will certainly check it all out next week when I'll have loads of time. Looking forward to seeing all the inspiring work in the pool!

Located in Van Buren County, Iowa, near the small town of Cantril, this unusual barn has quite a colorful history. At one time or another, this was a sales pavilion for hogs, a packing plant, a dormitory and it was also raided as a "speakeasy" during prohibition days.
History: Built in 1919 by Alva Hunt for $20,000 on the Wickfield farm, this barn was originally called the ‘Silvers Sale Pavilion’. Frank Silvers, a successful hog breeder and businessman, operated the largest Hampshire hog farm in the world with about 1500 hogs being fed at once. This ‘show barn’ was the hub of Silvers’ business and a symbol of his prosperity.
The first floor sales arena had seating for 700 people and Silvers' business office was also located on the first floor. Hogs were brought in through the double doors to an 8’x8’ holding area while auctioneers called the bids from a small balcony above.
On the second floor, around a central hall, there were eight pie-shaped sleeping rooms for workers and hog buyers. A few rooms were smaller than others to allow for stairways up and down, but each room had a dormer window. During multi-day sales, each room slept about ten people
The third floor had four more sleeping rooms and also served as a card room and social parlor, complete with a dance floor.
Wickfield Farms usually held two auctions in this ‘show barn’ each year, some lasting up to three months and steep bidding was part of the spectacle. About 3500 hogs were sold here each year. Unfortunately, Wickfield Farms was short-lived as a successful business. Like many farms, it went bankrupt during the Great Depression.
The physical structure is constructed of clay tile, is fifty-two feet in diameter and 65 feet tall. The two-pitch roof features eight dormers on the lower part and four dormers on the upper part of the roof. There is also a half-basement equipped with a dining room that seats 36 guests along with a kitchen, a furnace room, an electric lighting plant, and a pantry/fruit cellar.
The Wickfield Round Barn is claimed to be the "most unusual use of any round barn in the state” and may likely be the most elaborate ‘Show Barn’ in existence.
