Tech note: 5 X HDR to bring out the shadows, 3 partially blended at bush to rock extended line to water (also above the water to horizon) to remove artifacts and to get better white cap effect. Unfortunately, on white caps it is VERY easy to get "white out" artifacts (which is annoying!!!) but with careful blending one can usually get it out. I also ran into problems getting the right tone balance between the rocks and the sky but I ended up working on them separate and then layer it back to make it match properly.

I saw this bird sitting on a fence post ahead as I was driving a country road. I pulled off to the side, but could not see, because the sun was setting and shining right into my eyes. I lifted the camera to see what it was, and saw this beautiful Rough-legged hawk. It allowed me to get a few photos of it and then it decided to fly off into the sunset.

Story behind the shot: I was absolutely thrilled to capture my best ever flight shot of a Rough-legged Hawk. As I was driving along a rural road in my area, I could see several Roughies soaring up ahead. One of them was flying low heading towards me, so I parked and jumped out of my car and was able to take some photos as he flew directly overhead. I couldn't believe my good fortune! Everything fell into place that day for this stellar shot and I doubt I will ever be able to top it.
I spotted this light morph Rough-legged Hawk this morning on the Sumas Prairie it was hovering over the freeway perhaps looking for rodents. When I came back later I spotted it perched in some trees near the highway.
.. all puffed up at the side of the road. (I shot this through the front window of the van.) Once it realized it was seen, it 'unpuffed' and left, looking much thinner! I guess it was keeping warm.
A first for me, as they very rarely come down into southern california. Nests in the Arctic, then in winter migrates down into the northern US. My new favorite buteo.
Making the best of clipped wings: Rough-legged Hawk edition. This was my first time seeing this raptor — hopefully more images to come. Clicked the wrong dial (aperture not shutter speed) on this image but it worked out thankfully, taken with a D500 and 500mm + 1.4 TC at 1/1600 f/10 (!!) and ISO 1,600.

We had a few sessions with the adult Rough Legged Hawk taking off the high post to hunt the fields. I kept clipping him and decided just to go bare 400mm to get the whole body. A very good view of those feathered legs in this frame.
Always cool when a bird takes off in your direction. Taken with a D500 + 500mm + 1.4 TC at 1/2000 f/5.6 ISO 2,500.
