Since Piazza del Popolo is less well known than its cousins Navona and Spagna, it's much less crowded, giving it a quiet local charm without the tourist traps and touts you get elsewhere (although you'll still be offered the chance to purchase a selfie stick).
This remarkable piazza was laid out in 1538 to provide a grand entrance into Rome. It has been remodeled several times, most recently by Giuseppe Valadier in 1823.
