Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, located on the North Shore of Lake Superior, is known for its historic, picturesque lighthouse and scenic trails along the shoreline. The park was established in 1945 and is a popular destination for camping, hiking, and stunning views of the lake. The lighthouse beacon is lit annually on November 10 to commemorate the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. This is the only night of the year when visitors can climb the tower after dark to see the lit beacon.

Killing time in the city before heading to a camera club meeting. This was taken using a 7Artisans 12/2.8 mkII lens
Along the coast is the "Incomputa", an unfinished road open to pedestrians and joggers. The steep coast is secured with heavy wire nets. Before that the road was rockfall endangered. This rock must have fallen into the sea a long time ago.
According to local legends, the Rock of Cashel originated in the Devil's Bit, a mountain 20 miles (30 km) north of Cashel when St. Patrick banished Satan from a cave, resulting in the Rock's landing in Cashel.[1] According to the Tripartite Life of Saint Patrick Cashel is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Munster by Saint Patrick in the 5th century.[2]
The Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster as early as the 4th century and prior to the Norman invasion.[3] In the 5th century the Eóganachta clan built a fortress at Cashel retaining supremacy there for hundreds of years.[4] In 977 Brian Boru was crowned there as king and made Cashel his capital. In 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church.[3] The picturesque complex has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe.[5] Few remnants of the early structures survive; the majority of buildings on the current site date from the 12th and 13th centuries.

This is a photo of a wet, wave washed beach rock reflecting the evening light, and the in-rushing surf at Martinique Beach.
The Skull Rock Nature Loop passes through a maze of spectacular rock formations and luxuriant washes. Rock in this area began as liquid molten deep below the earth's surface. Continuously heated by movements in the Earth's crust, this molten oozed upward and cooled while still below the surface. Subsequent surface layer erosion exposed the rock, a form of granite called Monzogranite.
This nature loop offers excellent views of the east valley of Pinto Basin and sport some diverse vegetation and wildlife provided by the many standing pools of water in the recesses of the rock formations.

This is Spider Rock, (no, it doesn't really look like a Spider to me, either) This was shot just this morning in Canyon de Chelly. It was snowing all morning, which made for some fantastic photography. It was also really nasty, windy and bitter. I LOVE snow, but I HATE cold. Being cold sucks! Alright, God... If you're so powerful, how about you do something about this? C'mon... Can't you raise the freezing temperature from 32º up to... Ummmmmmmm... How about 62º? Wouldn't that be nice? Out shooting a blizzard wearing short sleeves. Can you work on that? Thanks.

I generally don't like the rock stacks you see in every park you go but I liked these small ones on the log.
A vast area of the vertical face of a rocky outcrop on the beach was covered with these - the yellow barnacles were tiny - about 4mm - to give you an idea of the scale of the pink ones, and of the tiny mussels. It was like fine inlay of some kind. The rocks are submerged at high tide.

This was taken on the Zia Reservation a few miles outside Albuquerque, New Mexico. There is enough soil and moisture in the porous rock that this tree is able to survive. Nature is truly marvelous.

Rock of Cashel

A place I would really like to visit but we didnt have time on journey from Cork to Athlone. ...so I just got this picture from our pit stop!
Sitting on an outcrop of limestone, this iconic cluster of buildings is of great historic significance.
It is considered to be the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland it includes a Romanesque church, a round tower, a gothic cathedral, an abbey, and a fifteenth-century Tower House.
Brian Boru was crowned High King here in 978 and made it his capital of his kingdom (which via his fighting with vikings and his wars with the other kingdoms had become a significant proportion of the Island of Ireland).
In 1101 the site was given to the church and the Cashel area became the significant headquarters of ecclesiastical power in Ireland.
