According to local legends, the Rock of Cashel originated in the Devil's Bit, a mountain 20 miles (30 km) north of Cashel when St. Patrick banished Satan from a cave, resulting in the Rock's landing in Cashel.[1] According to the Tripartite Life of Saint Patrick Cashel is reputed to be the site of the conversion of the King of Munster by Saint Patrick in the 5th century.[2]
The Rock of Cashel was the traditional seat of the kings of Munster as early as the 4th century and prior to the Norman invasion.[3] In the 5th century the Eóganachta clan built a fortress at Cashel retaining supremacy there for hundreds of years.[4] In 977 Brian Boru was crowned there as king and made Cashel his capital. In 1101, the King of Munster, Muirchertach Ua Briain, donated his fortress on the Rock to the Church.[3] The picturesque complex has a character of its own and is one of the most remarkable collections of Celtic art and medieval architecture to be found anywhere in Europe.[5] Few remnants of the early structures survive; the majority of buildings on the current site date from the 12th and 13th centuries.
For two days I've been talking about one of my three favorite areas for photography within 10 miles of my home. Today, I'm flushing out what I said about my hunt for the rock wren and lichen. Well, here they are. And to answer a logical question, no rock wren don't eat lichen (though MOST are edible). They mainly eat insects and spiders. Its song is a trill that becomes more varied during the nesting season. These birds are permanent residents in the south of their range, which is Western North America to South America, but they breed from southwest Canada to Costa Rica. They have a most beautiful trilling song.
In it's own way, it's a beautiful bird. Who needs color when you can call for a mate while sitting on a boulder covered with map lichen of (so far from my count) up to 12 colors? Can you do that?
Some of the "bumpy" lichen are actually akin to "flowers" or "flower buds." I may never be able to fully explain what a lichen is, how they get their colors (they'll turn black when it's too cold or they are nearing the end of their life cycles) which can be almost all of the colors of the rainbow. Look for yellow, orange, and red on rocks. Green is predominant on trees especially the Wolf Lichen. Careful, it is extremely toxic!

A place I would really like to visit but we didnt have time on journey from Cork to Athlone. ...so I just got this picture from our pit stop!
Sitting on an outcrop of limestone, this iconic cluster of buildings is of great historic significance.
It is considered to be the most impressive cluster of medieval buildings in Ireland it includes a Romanesque church, a round tower, a gothic cathedral, an abbey, and a fifteenth-century Tower House.
Brian Boru was crowned High King here in 978 and made it his capital of his kingdom (which via his fighting with vikings and his wars with the other kingdoms had become a significant proportion of the Island of Ireland).
In 1101 the site was given to the church and the Cashel area became the significant headquarters of ecclesiastical power in Ireland.

This is a difficult species to find on breeding territory. It's so interesting to view our "shorebirds" no where near the shore, and instead doing displays and strange calls up on mountains in the arctic!

New Plymouth's Paritutu Rock is the remains of an ancient volcanic crater and it has an almost vertical challenging climbing track on one side leading to 360 degree views from the top.
hard to believe that this shot is pretty level.
when the stateline and occasionly the peanut come by you have to stand as far back from the tracks as possible, because sometime they spill their load from the hoppers.
i chased the state line from the amtrak station to the south side.

It looks like a badly laid brick wall, but its actually rock strata protruding from the beach at Crackington Haven in north Cornwall.
Seseh Beach, Canggu, Bali
One of the famous beach in Canggu that still undeveloped Pantai Seseh (Seseh Beach ) is rugged and windswept, with dark volcanic sand.
The beach itself is nothing to shout about and locals with gather before sunset to gaze at the waves and the setting sun.
I spent 30minutes walking around the beach looking for some nice spot untill i found this vivid green rock..i was lucky ..there was no body around this spot :D

For the Macro Monday's theme of 'Rock'.
This is a rock or pebble that I found at Overton Mere , the Gower Peninsula on my very first WelshFlickrCymru Photo Meet in 2010. I brought it home as a trophy , but also because it intrigued me having studied Geog/ Geology in my student days.
South Gower is predominantly made up of Carboniferous Limestone complexly folded, in which synclines of Millstone Grit shales form embayments and depressions which are visible in this. Original shot in comments.
I hope it's acceptable to have included this old fossil's hand for the group.
As I continued to plan an October trip to Utah, I found more and more locations to explore and take in...and there were many national parks, monuments and other locales to visit! Church Rock was one I'd come across after seeing this image on Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/62741243@N04/34839485160/in/pool-ab...). Reading what I could about this famous and prominent natural landmark, I learned it's on private property but there are places to pull off the road to capture images. So while there was no snow yet on the La Sal Mountains, I was able to line up my SLR camera with what I'd seen previously on Flickr. I later used some CEP filters (Low Key, Polarization and Graduated Neutral Density) which seemed to best bring out a look that complimented the bright sunlight that early morning along U.S. Route 191.
I think it's a Rock Wren, but I can't be sure. I remember where I took the photo - rock wren territory - in the oak grass at about 700 feet. The reason this has been in storage so long is that as I photographed the tree stump, this little brown bird came in to see what I was up to, and then took off again. Good enough to keep, but not good enough to post. Still, all I am almost positive about is that it's a female, and the trunk is a century old and very dead oak tree.
This was the week before we left for Yellowstone and the Tetons, and I was practicing with my new SX50. It and I performed beautifully in both parks. Instead of a LBB, the first day in Yellowstone, I got six lifers! Too easy, really. Five Mountain Bluebirds in the first hour, and even an Osprey which perched with the sun in MY eyes. And then cross-bills, woodpeckers, grouse... And few people. The park "opened" the day after we left :-)
