Rock formations in a cliff at Mavillette Beach.

Texas Canyon in the Dragoon Mountains, AZ. I love this pile of boulders making a hill.

This rock had a very graphic look. The river must have frozen, then the water level dropped, leaving a frozen section on the rock. The second photo shows the entire rock.

This is from the rock stacking festival. So, they were doing more than stacking rock. ..lol..Who knew I would find a bench at the rock stacking festival..;) I know you're laughing..;) Anyway, I had a great time. Got a little sunburned. I put some lotion on but I may have waited too long to put it on.

Iowa Interstate's Rock Island Heritage Unit, IAIS 513, sits on display at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America's open house on June 29, 2024 in Silvis, IL. RRHMA is America's newest railroad museum, and now operates out of the former Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific's primary shop complex. RRHMA is now home to Union Pacific's 3985 and 5511 and IAIS's 6988 steam locomotives, as well as UP's Centennial 6936. On this day, Canadian Pacific's 2816, "The Empress," payed a visit to RRHMA to celebrate UP 6936's return to operation, which it was doing by giving excursions around yard.

I was sitting on the ground of the parking lot watching the Mountain Bluebird pair gathering food for their babies. They spent more time on the ground so I sat down and watched waiting to get a shot. About a minute later, I looked up and this Rock Wren was right in front of me.

I knew Rock Wrens had been seen up there but I was not expecting to look up and see it staring at me. Surprised and delighted me! No calls played.

ROCK On

Rock is a great master of life. It teaches us this simple philosophy: Stay firm!

Scrambling around the rocks at Killcare Beach I came across this interesting rock which looked somewhat like a whale ... Bungan Head is in the distance.

Taken at Merewether Beach, New South Wales, Australia.

The outer part of the rock platform is accessible at low tide and there are some interesting rock patterns and pools to see.

This is another species that benefits from washed-up seaweed or wrack and is often found feeding there, despite its name. It is, however, found mainly along rocky coastlines and it breeds in rock crevices and debris along the shoreline

I enjoyed the Cathedral Spires Trail. You see the rock formations from so many angles that it was a little difficult to limit my pictures to just a few. It's a nice, short, picturesque trail.

Macro Mondays theme... Rock.

Scoria rock :

Scoria is a highly vesicular, dark colored volcanic rock that may or may not contain crystals. It is typically dark in color, and basaltic or andesitic in composition. Scoria differs from pumice, another vesicular volcanic rock, in having larger vesicles and thicker vesicle walls, and hence is denser. The difference is probably the result of lower magma viscosity, allowing rapid volatile diffusion, bubble growth, coalescence, and bursting. (Wikipedia)

When observed closely with a hand lens, you can often see tiny mineral crystals in scoria.

Continuing with the westbound chase of the annual 470 Railroad Club charter on the Conway Scenic Railroad here's the next spot. This is the only other location that would work for a properly lit shot on a sunny day, but alas it just wasn't in the cards.

Just like in 2024 the club showcased their historic ex B&M trio of 1949 vintage F7s 4266/4268 and GP9 1741 resplendent in its as delivered McGinnis 'bluebird' livery. After first making a 12 mile round trip down and back on the former Boston and Maine Conway Branch the special headed west on the former Maine Central Mountain Sub mainline through Crawford Notch to Fabyan. They are headed west at MP 72.9 (as measured from former Portland Union Station) rolling alongside the Saco River between the 2nd and 3rd Iron bridges past a location known as Sawyer’s Rock.

A New Hampshire state historical marker along US 302 denotes this spot and reads:

In 1771, Timothy Lash of Lancaster and Benjamin Sawyer of Conway made a bargain with Governor John Wentworth to bring a horse through Crawford Notch in order to prove the route’s commercial value. The pair succeeded by dragging and lowering the animal down rock faces. Sawyer’s Rock is said to be the last obstacle they encountered before reaching the Bartlett intervales. Nash and Sawyer were rewarded with a 2,184 acre parcel at the northern end of the Notch. Sawyer’s Rock symbolizes the determination and foresight that helped open and develop trade and travel into the White Mountains region.

Interestingly this is actually a double header with two crews because the F7s have no MU connections on their front ends and therefore can not be controlled remotely from the GP9 when set up in this manner. To learn more about the history of these vintage locomotives refer to earlier posts in this series.

Just after sunset at Pulpit Rock, Portland Bill, Dorset. 25 second exposure with my Lee little stopper.

Of all the rocks on the beach, why do certain ones call to us?

A last picture from the Banff National Park. Actually, we crossed into the Kootenay National Park in British Columbia (my first time in BC, just for an hour or so...) here, to reach the Rock Isle Lake in the Sunshine Meadows area. Another beautiful walk and a magnificent place. Here I used a wide angle lens and decided to keep the flare in the pictue, as I think it add something without distracting from the scenery.
