Something I never thought I would see on the Mississippi Delta Railroad, wind mill trains... And my FIRST wind mill train at that. But here we are in 2023, a few years after Rock Island Rail took over operations, and these guys have turned it into a completely different railroad.
It's Friday Morning July 7th, 2023 and Rock Island Rail is taking one of several wind mill trains from the Canadian National interchange at Swan Lake up to Vestas Transload Terminal in Clarksdale, MS. This train being all wind mill towers.
Former BNSF SD38P, (now Rock Island) #1555 lead the first part of the journey from Swan Lake to Sumner, from there Rock Island GP38 #4373 was added to take the train the rest of the way to Clarksdale.
Here the train is seen passing through Albin, MS.
As of 2025, Rock Island Rail no longer operates the Mississippi Delta Railroad.

Steps in Mooloolaba beach at high tide. I had been panning to go back to this location for a while as I really like that rock and was wishing for a better sunrise but it was a bit overcast. The long exposure was able to capture some of the limited colours displayed.

You have all heard of elephant rock, camel back, and chimney rock. May I present to you Turtle Rock. One can only guess how this configuration came about. My guess is the bolder on top (shell) fell on the long lean rock (neck and head). Its a puzzle I will leave for the geologist to figure out. One of the pleasures of hiking is applying meaning to scenes on the trail.
I think the neck would make a great seat to eat lunch on. Its flat like a chair bottom, and the ground is just the right distance to comfortably rest your feet, like a chair.
The lichen growing on the rock makes the shell look like a jacket worn by a race car driver. Maybe this turtle belongs to a lost breed of racing turtles.
This is a close-up photo of light and shadow on a beach rock. The larger grain of beach sand reminds me of those 'pale blue dot' images of planet earth in the vastness of space as seen from Saturn.

CSX ethanol train K423 works its way past the iconic 'See Rock City' barn at Rydal, GA behind a pair of Kansas City Southern EMD's. Sadly no tiddies were seen here today.
A few hundred meters above the Vipava valley, there's this interesting rock window in limestone. Also a hiking trail goes through it, but most visitors visit it simply by hiking there across the upper plateau.
The Big Rock is a Glacial erratic from 500 miles north, the Milky way Core of our Galaxy is light years away, yet here they are in the same photo.
I couldn't resist re-shooting this iconic Sedona scene of Cathedral Rock recently. An overnight snow had mostly melted away by the day's end and filled these sandstone pools with water allowing for wonderful reflection images.
This was my favorite shot from last week's winter storm in Sedona. Steve Flowers and I spent New Years morning at Slide Rock State Park and when the storm started to break, the conditions were quite magical. I've never seen so much snow in the canyon. It was crazy cool.
the rock houses at Kinver, these recently restored houses were carved out of the sandstone by hand - amazing!
Beautiful rock near Jain Temple on Devanahalli Hill, Bengaluru, India. I was impressed by the shape , size and morph of this rock.

If you find yourself in Las Vegas and are suffering from neon burnout, take a ride out to Red Rock Canyon. You'll find that relief is closer than you thought. Located a mere 15 miles from the Strip, Red Rock Canyon is a natural wonderland full of red rock formations, sandstone peaks, and indescribable desert beauty.
There is chatter, that the Burning Man Festival may move here if the Bureau of Land Management does not renew the festival's permit at Black Rock Desert, which expires in 2020. My personal opinion is, the festival has become an overblown corporate event in recent years. Las Vegas with all the glitter, would be the perfect location--compatible bedfellows if you will.
