Many thanks as always to everyone who takes the time to look, like and comment on my pictures it is very much appreciated.

Cambrian quartzite beside the Mountain Trail in Beinn Eighe NNR. The "pipes", a little under 1 cm in diameter, are fossils of worm burrows from about 500 million years ago, here seen in cross section.

The quartzite was originally laid down as sandstone but metamorphosed by heat and pressure deep under the Earth's surface, losing the "grain" of the sandstone but not, in this instance, the fossils. A similar process is responsible for turning limestone into marble and, while chemically different, quartzite and marble can look quite similar, especially when the former doesn't contain fossils.

Very little plant life grows where quartzite is exposed as, being largely pure silicon dioxide, it doesn't break down to useful nutrients when it weathers, resulting in large areas of greyish-white exposed rock and scree, as illustrated on a large scale on Beinn Eighe itself, Foinaven and a number of other mountains in Scotland.

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Two Harbors, Minnesota

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, located on the North Shore of Lake Superior, is known for its historic, picturesque lighthouse and scenic trails along the shoreline. The park was established in 1945 and is a popular destination for camping, hiking, and stunning views of the lake. The lighthouse beacon is lit annually on November 10 to commemorate the sinking of the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975. This is the only night of the year when visitors can climb the tower after dark to see the lit beacon.

Prompt: Create an Ultra-realistic digital fine art of Split Rock Lighthouse in Two Harbors, Minnesota, depicted in accurate detail from the reference photo. The iconic lighthouse with its tan brick tower and black lantern stands atop a dramatic cliff overlooking Lake Superior. Beside the tower, the red-roofed keeper’s house and adjoining structures are rendered with precise architectural details. The rugged cliff face drops steeply to the blue expanse of the lake, which stretches calmly into the horizon under a clear sky tinged with soft hues of early evening light. Dense green forests extend inland, creating a natural contrast against the rock and water. Style: Ultra-realistic, digital fine art Mood: Majestic, serene, historic, timeless Lighting: natural daylight Aspect Ratio: Horizontal Quality: Museum-quality fine detail, no noise, no grain

The lighthouse at New Brighton on the Wirral, tides out and the sun is not.

New Brighton Lighthouse (also known as Perch Rock Lighthouse and called Black Rock Lighthouse in the 19th century) is a decommissioned lighthouse situated at the confluence of the River Mersey and Liverpool Bay on an outcrop off New Brighton known locally as Perch Rock. Together with its neighbour, the Napoleonic era Fort Perch Rock, it is one of the Wirral's best known landmarks.

The name comes from a Perch; a timber tripod supporting a lantern first erected in 1683 as a crude beacon to allow shipping to pass the rock safely. As the Port of Liverpool developed in the Nineteenth Century the perch was deemed inadequate as it required constant maintenance and only produced a limited light. Construction of the present tower began in 1827 by Tomkinson & Company using blocks of interlocking Anglesey granite using dovetail joints and marble dowels. It was designed to use many of the same construction techniques used in the building of John Smeaton's Eddystone Lighthouse 70 years earlier.[4] Modelled on the trunk of an oak tree, it is a free standing white painted tower with a red iron lantern. It is 29 m (95 ft) tall. It was first lit in 1830 and displayed two white flashes followed by a red flash every minute; the light-source was thirty Argand lamps, mounted on a three-sided revolving array (ten lamps on each side, with red glass mounted in front of one side). There were also three bells mounted under the gallery to serve as a fog signal; they were tolled by the same clockwork mechanism that caused the lamps to revolve.

The lighthouse was in continuous use until decommissioned in October 1973 having been superseded by modern navigational technology. Although the lighting apparatus and fog bell have been removed, the lighthouse is very well preserved and retains many features lost on other disused lighthouses. It was restored and repainted in 2001 when an LED lightsource was installed which flashed the names of those lost at sea; including all the 1,517 victims of the sinking of the Titanic. At low tide, it is possible to walk to the base of the tower, but a 25-foot ladder is needed to reach the doorway. The lighthouse is privately owned and maintained by the Kingham family, and is a Grade II* listed building.

Another plan to illuminate the lantern using LEDs and solar panels was achieved with a grant from the Coastal Revival and New Brighton Coastal Community Team (NBCCT) and has been operating (albeit only to be seen from land) since 2015. The new light replicates the old characteristic of two white flashes followed by a red flash.

Something I never thought I would see on the Mississippi Delta Railroad, wind mill trains... And my FIRST wind mill train at that. But here we are in 2023, a few years after Rock Island Rail took over operations, and these guys have turned it into a completely different railroad.

It's Friday Morning July 7th, 2023 and Rock Island Rail is taking one of several wind mill trains from the Canadian National interchange at Swan Lake up to Vestas Transload Terminal in Clarksdale, MS. This train being all wind mill towers.

Former BNSF SD38P, (now Rock Island) #1555 lead the first part of the journey from Swan Lake to Sumner, from there Rock Island GP38 #4373 was added to take the train the rest of the way to Clarksdale.

Here the train is seen passing through Albin, MS.

As of 2025, Rock Island Rail no longer operates the Mississippi Delta Railroad.

Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach in Oregon. There was a lot of mist at first but as the sun was setting the mist started to clear and revealed a gorgeous sky with really nice clouds and lighting.

I found this beautiful and large individual guarding a bed along the bank of the Nissitissit River yesterday afternoon. It was by far the most cooperative fish I've photographed yet, often letting me get the end of my dome port just inches away.

I've been exploring the coastal areas around Wellington, New Zealand to find interesting compositions to photograph under the night sky. Earlier this month I came across this rock pool which aligned perfectly with the rising Milky Way. Access to the pool over the rocks was difficult, but it was worth the effort to set this shot up.
