Chivalry is not dead in the world of ducks!
Exhibit A: Male Ring-necked Duck escorts his lady across a pond in Monroe Co, Tennessee.
This species is named for a dark chestnut neck ring that is nigh-on impossible to see against the dark purple neck. I think I have captured it on camera one time (not this picture), out of a couple of hundred photos.
There are some birders advocating for a change to the name.

I hope you are all enjoying summer as much as I do! I have had a wonderful vacation on Öland and Gotland, two beautiful Swedish islands in the Baltic Sea. This shot was taken on the small island Fårö ( where Ingmar Bergman lived and died).
It will take me a few weeks to catch up with you all! :)
This past weekend, I made a brief foray into Pulaski County, Virginia; quite far from where I usually bird. I looked for and found a continuing fallout of greater white-fronted geese and tundra swans, and was also treated to diving ducks and my first-of-season tree swallows. These ring-billed gulls were part of a flock of roughly 60 individuals I encountered there; not unusual at all in winter in Pulaski, despite being in the mountains.
A ring-billed gull glides gracefully through the air, its wings fully extended against a blurred brown background. The bird's feathers are highlighted, showcasing a mix of white and speckled patterns and has splash of the water close to the tail!!!

The Ring Tailed Lemur have scent glands on their wrists and chests and they use these for marking their foraging routs, the males have a horny spur on each wrist gland which they use to pierce tree branches before scent marking them, they also put the secretions from their wrist onto their tail. The Lemurs eat leaves, flowers and insects and they can also eat fruit, herbs and small vertebrates. The females are dominant within the group and this gives them the right to choose which food they wish to eat. Females give birth from about three years of age and usually once a year after that, they are only receptive for one or two days a year and the gestation period is between 4.5 to 5 months, they usually give birth to only one infant but if food is plentiful they can sometimes give birth to twins.
Gull grabbed a fish that was not easy to lift. The gull did manage to hang on and fly away with the fish.

The Gull is reacting to the sudden appearance of a Peregrine Falcon chasing another Gull in the air over the Ottawa River shoreline. While other birds fled this one, feeding in the shallows, spun and watched, shrieking loudly. This was the fifth time I have been on the River during Peregrine flyovers. It causes quite a stir. I should add that I am 0/5 trying to get an image of the Peregrine when it hunts over the River. It flies low and moves faster than I had appreciated. It is an amazing experience though.
Ringed plovers were another wader species that we saw lots of in Scotland, breeding in many locations on the coast
This beautiful Ring-necked Parakeet was flying onto fences and onto people's hands and arms to be fed when I visited St. James's Park on Wednesday! It was fabulous to be able to get so close! I know some people consider them to be pests, but I love these loud and colourful birds!
Macro Mondays theme: Ring
Had so many choices of rings as I'm a bit obsessed! Settled on my 3 coloured gold Russian wedding ring. I used to work for jewellers during my A-levels and university and this was in their "lost" collection - items that haven't been collected for a very very long time. So I got this for a bargain price. Had the idea to try and stand up one of the bands but that was easier said than done. Took loads with them all lying flat but then changed rings and came back to it and just managed to do it by chance! just wish I'd put a different colour underneath the glass, but didn't think I'd ever get it to do the same thing again!
Really appreciate all your comments and favourites as always. HMM to everyone!
