View into the Great Rift Valley, a scar North-South over most of Africa. From a viewpoint next to the main road Nairobi-Naivasha.
This viewpoint also has a small market with a big sign saying: Digital Valley Viewpoint. (See inset).
I asked one of the shop owners why this viewpoint was Digital. He said digital is te latest, so they don't want to miss progress. So although I'm not sure if I looked digital or not, sure the camera did.
The mountain just right of the middle is Mount Longonot, seen from above in an earlier upload. www.flickr.com/photos/tdwrsa/24166202401/in/photostream

Lost Beyond The Rift
A poem by Darryn John Murphy
Fallen from the grace of heaven
Upon the land of flint and bone, through driving rains
I wait and wonder. To only think and ponder
Beyond the horizon hangs a glimmer of hope
Beneath a sky as black as sack cloth
One mans fate is another mans burden
Beside the way side no place to rest my head this night
Darkened seas swell to only break upon the unsuspecting shore
Lost beyond the rift forever more
Long have I waited for the longing of my life's desire?
As distant fires burn like beacons in the night
To mark the passage of humanity's plight
As hope hangs in the balance
Will light and love spring forth from heaven?
Spreading goodwill forwards
Into the hearts off my fellow man
Brothers burdened by their plight
But not forgotten beneath the skies this night
For in their hearts they hold the light

HFF. Rift valley where the North American Plate has separated from the Eurasian Plate. Taken from the N.A. side; Eurasian Plate is the faint ridge on the horizon. Iceland lies along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which marks the separation of the two plates. Thingvellir National Park, Iceland.

Me adding my 2 cents to the night landscape along the Rapidan Fire Road at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia.
A selfie of sorts with the Milky Way's molecular dust clouds (known as the great rift). The clouds are estimated to contain about 1 million solar masses of plasma and dust.
Captured with a Bower 14mm f/2.8 super-wide angle lens (Nikon mount using an adapter to fit it to a Canon Rebel T2i). Not as impressive as any of the images taken with the Bower on a Canon 5D M II.
The orange glow on the horizon is light pollution from Madison County.

THANKS FOR VIEWING!
The Cygnus constellation and the Cygnus Rift, my first tracked shot.
Night was awfully windy so most of the shots were slightly blurred, expecially for exposures over 2 minutes...I need to buy a sturdier tripod :D
Single shot with Canon 700d and Sigma 17-50mm at 17mm, 2 minutes, f3.5, ISO1600.

In astronomy, the Great Rift (sometimes called the Dark Side, Dark Rift, or, less commonly, Dark River) is a series of overlapping, non-luminous, molecular dust clouds that are located between the Solar System and the Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy at a distance of about 100 parsecs or about 300 light years (2×1015 miles or 3×1015 kilometers) from Earth. The clouds are estimated to contain about 1 million solar masses of plasma and dust.
To the naked eye, the Great Rift appears as a dark lane that divides the bright band of the Milky Way lengthwise, through about one-third of its extent, and is flanked by lanes of numerous stars. Starting at the constellation of Cygnus, where it is known as the Cygnus Rift or Northern Coalsack, the Great Rift stretches to Aquila; to Ophiuchus, where it broadens out; to Sagittarius, where it obscures the Galactic Center; and finally to Centaurus. One of the most important regions it obscures is the Cygnus OB2 association, a large cluster of young stars and one of the largest regions of star formation near Earth. A similar dark band can be seen in edge-on distant galaxies, such as NGC 891 in Andromeda.

Another burn zone in a microwaved CD. No colors or patterns/details were added. I am amazed at the variety of the burn patterns, not only with various CDs or DVDs but also on different areas of a single CD. Looking around at 10x magnification feels like exploring a new world!
Looking up and out of the rift, Bear Grylls realized this might be a blind canyon and have to turn back. This could add days to his search for civilization.

#3102 - 2016 Day 180: I can but hope that it is only when there is a deep rift that sufficient light can get in to start the healing ...
Þingvellir is the site of Iceland's original parliament, originally established there in 930. It is now a National Park, and a popular tourist attraction. There are several rifts there with some being filled with crystal clear water. This is a section of one of those rifts. It's really striking to see, especially on a sunny day like this.

A further experiment from "UFO". I was planning to post it yesterday, but then I realized the image wasn't sharp enough to make the crackle more visible, so I did a retake today.
