A long exposure, landscape image of Öxarárfoss falls in Þingvellir, Iceland.
The Scottish weather just isn't playing ball at the moment so this one from a year ago in Iceland will have to do for today. Hardly a bad thing though. :-)
Iceland lies upon two tectonic plates, the American and the Mid-Atlantic one and those plates are moving creating a rift zone where they are drifting apart from each other. The position of that rift zone within Iceland has moved over the passage of millions of years. The mountain you see is Vatnsdalsfjall (the Lake Valley Mountain) located in Northwest Iceland where once that rift zone was located about 7 million years ago. The tall mountains you see are geological features that were folded up through the rift zone while the small hills in Vatnsdalur are not related to a old rift, but were formed in a huge rockslide down the sides of the mountains towering the valley. A very interesting and beautiful place to visit. (thanks for the information goes to Daníel Freyr Jónsson)
Happy Fence Friday!

Þingvellir National Park with Öxará river and Althing, the national parliament of Iceland. It's one of that famous places "must to visit" in Golden Circle, Iceland.
Þingvellir is a site of historical, cultural, and geological importance and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland. It lies in a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
The Althing, the national parliament of Iceland, was established at Þingvellir in 930, and held its sessions there until 1798. Þingvellir National Park was founded in 1930 and became a World Heritage Site in 2004.
Just after we arrived at our hotel room in front of Kouki beach, Okinawa, the sunlight came out from the rift of the clouds.
Thank you all for the SL group invites, very much appreciated.
This picture was taken in the game Rift :))
A north looking view of the Þingvellir rift valley in Iceland from near the Lögberg flagpole inside the National Park. On the left side of the foreground is the slope Hallurinn. Almannagjá gorge is further left outside of the photo. These features mark the west side of the rift valley. In the center of the photo is the Óxará which exits the Almannagjá by cutting threw the Hallurinn slope. It then flows down a low between faults. Fissures filled with water can be found along the banks of the river. Further to the right cliffs along other faults/fissures across the river can be seen. The bounding fault on the east side of the rift valley, Hrafnagjá, lies near the Mountains and cannot be made out in this photo. The Volcanoes and Volcanic Mountains on the horizon left to right are Ármannsfell, Lágafell, Skjaldbreiður ( a large shield volcano), Tindaskagi, Hrafnabjörg.
Well it was when I took the shot , back in January 2024 ! The ice formation on my car , a Rifter , created such a fascinating pattern of the ice formation it needed a shot , although , it has taken me nearly a year to get round to posting it !!
A picture of the magitude of the Rift Valley in Tanzania would not be complete without Maasai warriors. I have shown you how huge the valleys are in previous pictures. Here the men are on the rim of one of the steep canyons and are just descending down to the valley.
I have shown this picture before in another album, but few people saw it. This time around I did little editing.
Soon, I will be leaving for Africa again and will be off and on Flickr until I leave. This new trip is to South Africa where I have been before, but to different lodges and locations, then on to Mozambique which is a country I have always wanted to visit. I will try to catch up with all of you when I can.
Very clearly a rift in the space time continuum. Evidenced by an example of rotating the picture (go ahead, tilt your head, see the rotation). You'll note that, indeed, the picture seems to be fine at nearly any rotation. An obvious sign of a fissure in the space-time continuum.
And if you peer real close, you can see spaceships and stagecoaches dueling it out deep in the bright white heart of the door.
The Point Reyes peninsula is a well defined area, geologically separated from the rest of Marin County and almost all of the continental United States by a rift zone of the San Andreas Fault, about half of which is sunk below sea level and forms Tomales Bay. The fact that the peninsula is on a different tectonic plate than the east shore of Tomales Bay produces a difference in soils and therefore to some extent a noticeable difference in vegetation.
The peninsula includes wild coastal beaches and headlands, estuaries, and uplands. Parts of the park are private farms and ranches which have commercial cattle grazing. These were leased back when the park was purchased to continue these historic uses. Other parts are under the jurisdiction of other conservation authorities but the National Park Service provides signage and manages visitor impact on the entire peninsula and Tomales Bay.

Sandwich Harbour, Namibia.
Incredible textures come alive in the morning sun on the dunes in Sandwich Harbour.
interesting sandstone forms in the lower Antelope Slot Canyon outside of Page Arizona, What do you see?
This is called a slot canyon, a narrow rift in the sandstone which can be 35' deep and at times almost too narrow to walk through. Other area's the canyon widens out to 20 ~30 feet. The sandstone swirls are formed by flooding water and wind currents over many many years. The Canyon featured is called "Lower Antelope Canyon" and Lower and Upper are both located just 5 miles east of Page Arizona
