Start-up funder: come to us without an idea

By Craig Grannell on March 15, 2012

Experts debate Y Combinator’s plans to look for talent, not concepts

Start-up funder: come to us without an idea Y Combinator's new programme focuses on great start-ups that lack a great idea.

Y Combinator has announced Apply to Y Combinator without an Idea. The thinking is that a lack of an idea shouldn't stop talented people from starting a start-up. The press release states: "If you apply [and] seem like you'd make good founders, we'll accept you with no idea and then help you come up with one". It added that start-ups often change ideas completely and go on to great success: "Reddit was originally going to be a way to order food on your cellphone. Scribd was originally going to be a ridesharing service."

We asked Harj Taggar, a partner at Y Combinator, if investors these days therefore care more about the team than the idea. "It depends on the stage of investment. If it's a late-stage investment, investors care most about metrics like revenue and growth, though the team is still an important piece. But the earlier the stage, the more important the team becomes because that's essentially all the data there is about the company," he said. "At the stage Y Combinator invests at – often before a company has even been incorporated – we've no real data on the 'company', and so the only thing we have to judge is the team. And ideas are generally more malleable than people."

Ideas are cheap and plentiful

We spoke to Pascal Finette, Director Open Innovation Group and WebFWD at Mozilla, who largely sided with Taggar on the subject of investors caring more about teams than ideas: "I believe they do, for multiple reasons. Ideas are literally cheap and plentiful, and anything 'new' has been done before, in some other combination. Even Apple didn't originally invent the GUI, but it executed on the idea. Hint: it's about the team!"

The second reason, said Finette, is that executing on a good idea is very hard, and very few people have the talent, experience and everything else it takes to create a success. He added that there are also people who can execute but that don't have the right idea: "I even built a business around this concept – FoundersLink – where we match amazing people who have strong 'founder genes' with great ideas, which we systematically scouted."

We asked Finette if part of the problem with ideas also stemmed from people in the industry being inflexible and precious, rather than ditching something that's not working, or rapidly iterating to something new. "Yes – as I said, ideas are cheap, and everyone has at least one business idea per day, but we don't or can't execute on them," he replied. "Because of this, I'll never understand why people are so coy about sharing their ideas. As if someone would 'steal' the idea. It doesn't really happen, and if it does, it's only because other people are better at executing than you are."

Kevin Mann, founder of graphic.ly, told .net that when working through the TechStars process, the team was constantly reminded it was selected because of the team rather than the idea. Once in the process, ideas were then refined and shaped, and while graphic.ly didn't hugely change direction, Mann said teams from his year are now working on very different things to what they were at the time.

Beyond the team

However, Mann told us he's a little worried about Y Combinator's plans. "It goes beyond the team. Dropbox co-founder Drew Houston summed it up by saying he thought of 'idea, team, and market as multipliers for success', and I myself would add the passion of the team to that equation," he said. "That's where I worry about the 'no idea' idea. Paul Graham is really smart, and teams that join Y Combinator without an Idea will end up with something viable and investable by the time they graduate the programme. The idea and the market will be strong and the team will have all of the qualities to execute. But the team will need to be passionate about the market and idea."

Mann said that running a start-up is tough, draining, exciting, challenging and all-consuming, and so if you're not passionate about an idea, it will not mean enough to you to succeed – the motivation and the drive will not be there. "Having no idea would worry me because the team is then dependant on external sources for vision and direction. Would such a team be able to pivot if it wasn't working out?," he asked. "From talking to investors and mentors, it's that ability to execute that makes a team investable. Without that, the risk is too high, and so the team is the most important factor for success – but it's not the only factor."

When you suffer a personal bodily injury, especially the kind causes by someone else’s negligence or recklessness, the law is designed to help you become “whole again” or as close to it as possible. Legally, what this means is: you are entitled to compensation for all your economic and non-economic and if you area awarded the full amount, the law suggests you have been made whole again. But in real terms, most persons who suffer personal injuries are never really whole again. Here’s what you should know about being whole again in the State of California after you suffer a personal injury caused by another person.

Being Made Whole Again Legally in California after a Personal Injury Accident

As mentioned, according to the law, you are legally made whole again if you recover all your economic expenses and non-economic damages. Economically, this includes things like:

•Lost wages

•Medical expenses

•Future medical expenses

•Loss of earned capability

•Future loss of wages and benefits

•Some household services

•Out-of-pocket expenses, like prescription medication or wheelchairs

•Burial and funeral expenses (in cases of wrongful death).

Non-economically, this means recovering monetarily for your pain and suffering, loss of consortium, mental anguish, and other abstract and not easily quantifiable damages.

When you have been recompensed for proven damages in their monetary form, the law deems you whole again. This, however, is far from the whole truth. For many of you, you will never physically be whole again. Likewise, many of you will never be emotionally or mentally whole again. Some accidents take a serious and deep toll on the lives of victims (and the families and friends), and some things money simply cannot bring back so as to make you whole again.

Being Made Whole Again Physically in California after a Personal Injury Accident

When the accident is a minor one in nature, bodily injuries will usually heal without much hassle. If you have a treatment plan, you should always follow it to ensure your injuries heal properly and as soon as possible. For some of you, though, the accident may have been severe, and these accidents can be caused by:

•Car accidents

•Truck accidents

•Motorcycle accidents

•Rideshare accidents

•Pedestrian accidents

•Slip and fall accidents

•Many other types of accidents.

Injuries like head trauma, spinal cord, amputations, or multiple bone fractures can lead to life-long complications and can even be life-threatening. What was once normal will no longer be normal again for you, meaning you will not actually physically be made whole again. You may have been compensated for these injuries by being compensated for loss of future earnings and long-term medical care, but you will have to learn to live your life in a different way. Money can’t change that.

Being Made Whole Again Emotionally & Mentally in California after a Personal Injury Accident

The emotion and mental aspect of a personal injury is just as problematic as serious injuries. If you have suffered head trauma, spinal cord injury, an amputation, or some kind of disfigurement, then your pain and suffering will be long-term. Flowing from that pain and suffering is the materialization of emotional distress and mental anguish. Depression can be destabilizing. Depression can alter your life in many different ways, all of which are to your detriment and to the detriment of your family and friends.

In many ways, being made whole again is dependent on your emotional and mental well-being. Without the latter, you will never be whole again.

The Role of a Personal Injury Attorney & Being Made Whole Again

As you may know, money cannot make you whole again necessarily, but it can help. The important issue is making sure you have an attorney who fights for you and doesn’t settle for a settlement not in your favor. The compensation must consider all that you have been through and all that you may go through.

At The Ledger Law Firm, our personal injury legal team at the Newport Beach and Rancho Mirage offices are here to fight for you. We can empathize with your pain and will do all within the law to help you get back to being whole as much as possible. Contact our office today to learn more about our approach to representing our clients and their personal injury claims.

New York taxi drivers are like gondoliers. A guild, a labouring elite. And there's a strict system. If you own a medallion you're made (in Venice there are 400, in NYC about 13,000). Or at least you used to be - before Uber. In 2014 NYC taxi medallions were selling for OVER A MILLION DOLLARS. When ride sharing and then the pandemic began to cut into the demand for medallions a lot of drivers - who had to borrow enormous sums, on average $600,000, to pay for them - got into deep trouble and there was a serious mental health crisis, bankruptcies, destitution. Things are looking up, though and the city did eventually provide debt relief. The wisdom of maintaining fleets of licenced taxis will become evident as Uber, Lyft and the rest meet with the economic reality of the end of cheap money.

Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, joined by Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders and Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Mike Kennealy, announce that the Commonwealth is on track to meet the goal of vaccination 4.1 million residents by the first week of June and all remaining COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted effective May 29 at a State House press conference on May 17, 2021. The Commonwealth’s face covering order will also be rescinded on May 29, and Governor Baker will end the State of Emergency on June 15. The Department of Public Health will issue a new face covering advisory consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated guidance. Face coverings will still be mandatory for all individuals on public and private transportation systems (including rideshares, livery, taxi, ferries, MBTA, Commuter Rail and transportation stations), in healthcare facilities and in other settings hosting vulnerable populations, such as congregate care settings. Waiting for a driver in the Revel Rideshare app.

watch video: youtu.be/sMmpDhTkut4 Rocket Lab successfully launched its Electron rocket Nov. 10 on a long-delayed first commercial mission for the small launch vehicle. The Electron lifted off from the company’s Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula at 10:50 p.m. Eastern (4:50 p.m. local time Nov. 11) after a trouble-free countdown. The two-stage rocket released an upper stage, called Curie, into orbit nine minutes after liftoff. Curie ignited its engines 51 minutes after liftoff to go into a circular 500-kilometer orbit at an inclination of 85 degrees. Three minutes later it released its payload of six small satellites. “We’re thrilled to be leading the small satellite launch industry by reaching orbit a second time and deploying more payloads,” Peter Beck, chief executive of Rocket Lab, said in a post-launch statement. “The team carried out a flawless flight with incredibly precise orbital insertion.” Those satellites included two Lemur-2 cubesats for Spire, which operates a constellation of such spacecraft to collect weather data as well as track vessels and aircraft. The Cicero-10 small satellite built by Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems for weather satellite constellation company GeoOptics was also on the launch, as was IRVINE01, a cubesat built by high school students in Southern California. IRVINE01 features an electric propulsion system developed by Accion Systems, marking the first flight of that company’s technology. Fleet, an Australian company developing a constellation of smallsats for Internet of Things services, added two 1.5-unit Proxima cubesats to the mission in October. The satellites are the first to be launched by the company, ahead of larger 3-unit cubesats that are part of a SpaceX Falcon 9 dedicated rideshare mission scheduled to launch later in November. An additional payload, called NABEO and developed by High Performance Space Structure Systems GmBH, will remain attached to Curie. It will deploy a sail after the release of the other satellites to test its use as a means of deorbiting satellites. That payload was installed in cooperation with Ecliptic Enterprises Corporation, which announced an agreement with Rocket Lab in August to arrange similar hosted payloads on future Electron missions. The launch was the third mission for the Electron, and the first since a January test flight that was the first to reach orbit. This mission, dubbed “It’s Business Time” by Rocket Lab, marked the beginning of routine commercial operations. That mission was originally scheduled for launch in April but postponed because of a motor controller problem in one of the rocket’s first stage engines. The company corrected the problem and rescheduled the launch for late June, only to have the problem reappear. In an August interview, Beck said the company decided to make changes to the design of the controller to address the problem. “We made the decision to bite the bullet,” he said then. “We’ll go in there and make some changes to the hardware, some components of the motor controller.” With this success the company plans to step up the pace of launches. Rocket Lab’s next Electron mission is expected to take place in December, carrying a collection of cubesats from NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative under a contract awarded by NASA’s Venture Class Launch Services program in 2015. That launch will take place “within a few weeks,” Beck said in the statememt. ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ Video edited by : Space & ISRO News Footage Courtesy : Rocket Lab's ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ▶Plz Like Share..
