The state of Virginia is home to two of the most brutal prisons in the country -Red Onion & Wallens Ridge State Prisons. Located in the middle of coal mine country. Both created through the destruction of the environment and of course, the surrounding communities. Having spent over 14 years in captivity -- six of which were spent between these two institutions -- I can say that the daily living conditions inside these human warehouses are hell, to say the least. Men are tortured in these places every single day -- enduring 5 point restraints, having their bones broken, being bitten by dogs, being held in solitary confinement indefinitely, being denied adequate medical care, being forced to work for less than a dollar a day, being denied visits due to the distance between the prisons and the communities where 99.9% of the prisoners previously resided. This means that the majority of the men *never* receive a visit during their time there - which was also the case for me. The Rideshare Program, which SPARC has had going on for almost a year now, is helping to bridge that gap between prisoners and their families, friends and communities. Four trips have taken place so far. All were successes. However, not being a non-profit, thus not having access to the coffers of the of the very corporations which are responsible for much of the suffering, SPARC survives through the love and strength of the community. The resources which exist amongst the people. All of those who have ever lost a son or daughter (or both) to a system that runs off human blood and suffering. All of those who have ever been sentenced to 1, 5, 20 years or live without mama and daddy (or both). All of the folks who have ever endured the nightmare of existence within a concrete box - those who survived as well as those who perished within the beast. All of the soldiers who have fought to keep the issue in the forefront of societies mind - while seeking to gain a few concessions along the way. And, most of all, all the brothers and sisters who are still living behind enemy lines. It's these brave souls that endure the horror with a tenacity that folks living in minimum security (us out here) could never truly understand. It's these folks that I gather my greatest level of inspiration from.

Along your route, other commuters join you based on their location and destination.
USC Viterbi Professor Maged Dessouky is at the forefront of transportation technology. With funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, he is finding ways to optimize ridesharing algorithms and shares his valuable research with the next wave of transportation companies such as Carma (formerly Avego) and Sidecar at USC Viterbi-hosted conferences.
While today we choose among driving alone, carpooling, taking the metro, walking or biking, commuters of the future will have the luxury of choosing among various automated transportation modes. Driverless cars and computer programs that optimize complex ridesharing networks will make personal vehicles, traffic jams, energy waste and automobile accidents relics of the past, nothing but a story that commuters tell each other as they socialize, nap and read while they are whisked from place to place. —KM
Spokane County's Growth and Transportation Efficiency Center (GTEC) implementation director was nominated by the Washington State Ridesharing Organization.
Governor Charlie Baker and Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, joined by Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders and Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Mike Kennealy, announce that the Commonwealth is on track to meet the goal of vaccination 4.1 million residents by the first week of June and all remaining COVID-19 restrictions will be lifted effective May 29 at a State House press conference on May 17, 2021. The Commonwealth’s face covering order will also be rescinded on May 29, and Governor Baker will end the State of Emergency on June 15. The Department of Public Health will issue a new face covering advisory consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated guidance. Face coverings will still be mandatory for all individuals on public and private transportation systems (including rideshares, livery, taxi, ferries, MBTA, Commuter Rail and transportation stations), in healthcare facilities and in other settings hosting vulnerable populations, such as congregate care settings. I was the first of three riders and we were all a little confused about how many potential riders there could be, how far out of our way we'd be going, who would be dropped off first and how the fare would be split if we're all starting and ending at different locations. We did conclude that we saved some money, lost some time and our driver had to work harder with all the intermediate pickups and drop offs. Watch video interview and ride here
