The obvious cause of my overflowing cold water loft tank..

The big red ball should be attached to the float arm.. but it isn't.

Therefore the arm is in the dropped position so the valve is open and water continues to fill the tank without any means of a cut off. Subsequently this excess water will now discharge through the overflow pipe which is how I became aware of a problem.

Incredibly the ball was attached to the arm via a plastic retainer rather than screwed on with a far more durable brass thread thingy if you know what I mean. Having said that this float valve ball has lasted 33 years so it hasn't done too badly.

The plastic retainer has sheared off from the ball and is unrepairable so the whole lot will need to be replaced.

The plumbing parts required are not expensive and are not particularly difficult to fit either. The biggest problem is access to and movement within the loft.

With the threaded retainer removed, the top hate washer can be poked out with a small screwdriver.

Didn’t take a photo all day, so, ya. But I did enjoy myself walking around the garden center and Walmart. Found a decent looking frame for my 24”x36” bird ID poster. Now just need to get it flattened out.

The Asantehene, Osei Tutu II, King of Asante.

Sunday 4 October 2009

The Asantehene, surrounded by dozens of retainers, soldiers, and a BBC documentary crew, prepares himself to enter the durbar grounds. He puts on his royal/stoic face.

It was very difficult to get closer to the King. His image and these ceremonies have been a source of (moderate) income for foreign filmmakers and photographers so His Majesty has attempted to control who films him and under which circumstances. Once I'm noticed a security guard brusquely stops me from filming and he shoots me very hateful looks afterward.

The frantic pace, the vivid swirling colors, the blinding sun & gold ornaments, the pounding of drums, the bleating of horns, the press of people, and the fluttering, bobbing canopy umbrellas were truly overwhelming. It was a huge production and yet, incredibly, this was a relatively low-key event by Asante ceremonial standards.

A clip of this event can be found here:

The Water Tower at Kenilworth Castle in Kenilworth, Warwickshire. The tower was given it's name because it overlooked lower pool outside the castle walls. It is thought to have been built by Thomas of Lancaster in the early 14th century. It's exterior has pyramidial corner buttresses with cruciform arrowlets with oillets. The tower provided additional lodging for Thomas'leading retainers. The ground floor door led to a private chamber with a fireplace and latrine. An internal spiral stairs gave access to superior first floor chamber which had two light windows with built in seats.

The Castle was first constructed in Norman times and updated through to Tudor times, the castle has been described by architectural historian Anthony Emery as "the finest surviving example of a semi-royal palace of the later middle ages, significant for its scale, form and quality of workmanship".

Kenilworth has also played an important historical role. The castle was the subject of the six-month long Siege of Kenilworth in 1266, believed to be the longest siege in English history, and formed a base for Lancastrian operations in the War of the Roses. Kenilworth was also the scene of the removal of Edward II from the English throne, the French insult to Henry V in 1414 (said by John Strecche to have encouraged the Agincourt campaign), and the Earl of Leicester's lavish reception of Elizabeth I in 1575.

The castle was built over several centuries. Founded in the 1120s around a powerful Norman great tower, the castle was significantly enlarged by King John at the beginning of the 13th century. Huge water defences were created by damming the local streams and the resulting fortifications proved able to withstand assaults by land and water in 1266. John of Gaunt spent lavishly in the late 14th century, turning the medieval castle into a palace fortress designed in the latest perpendicular style. The Earl of Leicester then expanded the castle once again, constructing new Tudor buildings and exploiting the medieval heritage of Kenilworth to produce a fashionable Renaissance palace.

Kenilworth was partly destroyed by Parliamentary forces in 1649 to prevent it being used as a military stronghold. Ruined, only two of its buildings remain habitable today. The castle became a tourist destination from the 18th century onwards, becoming famous in the Victorian period following the publishing of Sir Walter Scott's novel Kenilworth in 1826. English Heritage has managed the castle since 1984. The castle is classed as a Grade I listed building and as a Scheduled Monument, and is open to the public.

This was the residence of the chief retainer of the house of Doi that ruled the Koga domain. The Takami family held the hereditary position of chief retainer. The house dates back to 1633 and was built with extra wood that wasn’t used for the construction of Koga Castle’s 3rd floor. The most famous chief retainer of the Doi clan was Takami Senseki (1785-1758) who also served as respected advisor to the Tokugawa shogunate as an advisor on all things “western”. A student of Dutch studies, Senseki was instrumental in creating modern maps of Japan and engaging in the diplomatic negotiations with the western powers in the waning days of the Shogunate. Senseki was fond of corresponding in Dutch and even signed his letters under the pen name Jan Hendrik Daper. An extensive collection of his work is on display at the Koga City History Museum.

Koga City, in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, has a history that dates back to ancient Jomon times and was even mentioned in the Man’yōshu anthology of poems that was compiled in the AD 800s. During the Muromachi period, Koga became the base for the Kantō branch of Ashikaga under the leadership of Shigeuji, who led a rebellion against the Ashikaga shogunate.

During the Edo period (1603-1868), the fief of Koga was ruled by many hereditary daimyo whose families had pledged loyalty to Tokugawa Ieyasu prior to the battle of Sekigahara in 1600. The families that ruled Koga included the Ogasawara, various branches of the Matsudaira, Okudaira, Nagai, Honda and Doi. Perhaps Doi Toshikatsu, who became tairō (chief elder of the council of elders - rōjū) during the reign of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, was the most famous ruler of Koga.

Another famous ruler of Koga was Doi Toshitsura (1789-1848), who is sometimes called the “The Snow Lord”. Apart from being a key advisor to the Tokugawa shogunate, he was the first person in Japan to seriously study the designs of snowflakes. He illustrated his findings in a book Sekka Zusetsu (Pictorial Illustrations of Snowflakes) and some of the patterns became popular for clothing and decorative purposes.

Today, there is nothing left of the Edo period Koga castle, but numerous old temples, shrines, samurai and farmer homes remain. Unfortunately, many of these buildings suffered damage during the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011 and repairs were ongoing when I visited.
