This rest area had the oldest bathroom I have seen in a long time.

a/k/a the Crestview Safety Rest Area in Mono County, California. Unseasonably early for 2008 and colder than a witch's, er, uh, elbow.

Somewhere between Orlando and Tallahassee, I think, on SR-8 West.

A submission was made to the NDDOT Innovation Jam (I-Jam) for promoting

pollinator habitat at rest areas and approved in December of 2018. The Beach Rest Area would be the first location to showcase a voluntary pollinator planting as part of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department (NDGF) North Dakota Monarch Butterfly and Native

Pollinator Strategy.

The objective is to plant and develop a pollinator garden in the front lawn of the Beach Rest Area that contains native grasses and forbs that provide larval and nectar source habitat for insects as well as forage and nesting habitat for migratory birds (essentially habitat i.e. food and shelter). All the while being visually appealing to tourists, local residents, and promote pollinator awareness and education to the public.

Iowa has a rest area about an west of Des Moines that features the state's wind power. That's a wind turbine blade reaching to the sky. In vain.

The eastbound rest area features agriculture.

If you stop at the world's largest truck stop in Walcott, just west of the Quad Cities, this rest area makes a good next stop.

Can't trust the locals by the look of it - the table is chained to the shelter. What if they steal the shelter too? Oh, hang on. That appears to be concreted in.

The Polk County Safety Rest Area on US-59, about 100 miles from where I started in Sugar Land, en route to Binghamton, New York. US-59 is now mostly 4-lane through this area and has been made limited access. It was mostly 2-lane back when I first drove it in 1978. As you can see, I'm not even half-way across Texas, Yet.

Base of a cell phone tower at a rest stop on I-17, north of Phoenix, Arizona. Seeing this photo reminded me of the time at Boeing when I first heard of the word "weldment."

It was a blazing hot and humid day for a grand re-opening ceremony at the Wisconsin Information Travel Center on I-90 just outside Beloit. The governor was there and a LOT of protesters; you couldn't hear anything and it was a circus zoo like atmosphere. Visit Beloit invited me to come and to get some photos, or I'd probably not have gone.

The Wisconsin Travel Information counter, staffed by local volunteers, just after the ribbon cutting ceremony ended and most of the Scott Walker protesters exited. Hope all those cake pops found a good home. Thanks to everyone - EVERYONE (you know who you are) - for all you did to make this a great day for Wisconsin and Beloit!

(Despite my non-partisan ambivalence, I'm glad to have experienced the Wisconsin political unrest first-hand. The protesters didn't win me over... their tactics seem childish. I'm still not a fan of the details - particularly the environmental ones - in the radical changes in Walker's budget. I'll never support extremism by either side and that seems our only choice in Wisconsin these days. Sad that.)
