Redwings are often in large flocks and are typically wary and skittish. This is because birds in a flock respond to what others are doing so if one bird flies and gives the alarm, the whole flock is likely to go. This is the main advantage of living in a flock as there are more pairs of eyes looking out for danger. But I have noticed that they are less risk averse in very cold weather when they are hungry, and if you can find an individual bird it can be quite confiding. I was over in Lancashire this week and found this Redwing all by itself, and I managed to get some half decent shots of it at close range.

The scientific name is Turdus iliacus. Turdus is the Latin word for a thrush, whereas iliacus refers to the flanks. In humans the ilium is the widest bone in the pelvis and the iliac artery passes through the pelvis to deliver blood to the legs. You can clearly see the orange flanks here that give rise to the common name Redwing. The red extends under the wings too and is visible when the bird flies like this: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/52642315959/in/photolist John Ray used the name Redwing in 1678 in the first British bird book in English (as opposed to Latin). He also used the names Swinepipe and Wind Thrush. Ninety years later Thomas Pennant singled out Redwing and the name has been with us ever since.

A woman paid me a delightful compliment. She had just got onto my bus home and clearly noticed my dress at once. She really did not have time to make out that I am trans before saying, quite spontaneously, "I love your dress!"

While absolutely thrilled to hear it, I was at a loss how to respond. Do I just say thank you? Do I tell her I was very lucky to get it in for £7 in the sale and risk starting a conversation? I would like to reply with a compliment to her, but nothing sprang instantly to mind. Can I even say anything to her without my voice giving me away?

By the time all these questions had come into my head and I had recovered from the surprise of being complimented by a stranger, the moment was gone. She sat elsewhere and I did not follow her.

I realise I must do better at speaking to strangers, better at accepting compliments graciously and better at returning them. I just was not ready this time, but perhaps I will be better next time.

I took a selfie to commemorate the day, which I managed unobtrusively because I was in the back seat of an almost empty bus.

Responding to an AFA in town. I only managed to get this shot as the driver took a wrong turn.

Community First Responders are fully trained volunteers who attend 999 emergency calls in their own community. In the East Midlands, Community First Responders are dispatched by the EMAS (East Midlands Ambulance Service) Emergency Operations Centre in the same way as ambulances.

Because Community First Responders live in the local community, they can often arrive at the scene of the emergency much faster than an ambulance. If they arrive first on scene, Community First Responders can provide assessment and treatment for the patient before the arrival of the ambulance.

“Lovers find secret places inside this violent world where they make transactions with beauty.

Reason says, Nonsense.

I have walked and measured the walls here.

There are no places like that.

Love says, There are.

Reason set up a market and begins doing business.

Love has more hidden work.

Hallaj steps away from the pulpit and climbs the stairs of the gallows.

Lovers feel a truth inside themselves that rational people keep denying.

It is reasonable to say, Surrender is just an idea that keeps people from living their lives.

Love responds, No.

This thinking is what is dangerous.

Using language obscures what Shams came to give.

Every day the sun rises out of low word-clouds into burning silence.”
