Norfolk Southern's Honoring First Responders Locomotive passes Orrick Farm Service with NS Train 224. It was a cold, icy morning on the NS Kansas City District, but this SD60E was worth chasing, especially when it means so much to my girlfriend Melanie, who is a 911 Emergency Dispatcher, and this shot was taken in her hometown!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paxoi, Paxi, and Paxos (Greek: Παξοί) is one of the Ionian Islands, and the municipality (dimos), located in the northwest of Greece, south of Corfu. It is also the collective name for a group of islands, which Paxi and Antipaxi are the largest. The island has an area of approximately 19 square kilometers and has approximately 2,300 inhabitants. The capital is the picturesque Gaios, a former pirate nest, located on the southeast side of the island. Here is also the main port of the island

Other places of interest are any Lakka in the far north and Loggos (also called Longos) in the northeast. The west coast is characterized in large part by steep cliffs limestone, which are strongly eroded at sea level. Paxos is famous for its olive trees (about 500 000) and the high quality olive oil is produced.

A Flickr friend responded to my Incandescence rendition of the local beech woods by saying that they preferred the calm copper tones that you more naturally find in them at this time of year. I think that’s a good point so I have created a more natural version of a different ICM from the same set (taken about a minute and ten captures later).

So here we have it. The copper tones are beautiful though the bright backlight needed careful handling in the processing.

And then I completely messed up. I started thinking that the natural coloured streakiness of the image made a rather charming abstract. I wonder what would happen if…

I was doomed (and by extension I regret to say that you were also doomed). My brief adulation at having produced a photorealistic image evaporated like a misty morning - did it ever even exist?

The Eyes of Autumn was a straightforward play with that toy of many delights, the Affinity Mirror distort filter. I applied it twice to a copy of the image (both using two mirrors I think) and then blended the result back with the original image using the Glow blend mode, just because it looked nice. And cooked. And saturated. And… doomed, as I said…

For Debbie.

Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the images :)

Thank you to our first responders...whether they be fire, police, EMT, or military...who are the greatest heroes in our country! Support the red, blue, orange, camo, or whatever color you want to use but support these heroes without fail!!

Image was taken during my trek to photograph all 95 county courthouses across my home state of Tennessee...now revisiting in order that the courthouses were photographed!

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D7200 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

Saw this fire engine flashing its lights at an intersection yesterday and thought something might have happened up hill. When we walked across the street, we saw the fire engine stop by the roadside further up the street on our right. There were a couple of kids with bikes and one must have fallen down and got hurt. Stay safe, everyone!

Explore #450, May 31st, 2020

They were just curiously looking the stranger.

“..use that famous line on this one, do it do it” – Stormtrooper on the back anxiously said thru the speaker system.

“…let me see your identification“, said the Stormtrooper on front to a stranger.

Stranger didn’t responded. He just stood there, like a statue. For a moment, it looked like the Stormtroopers were seeing ghosts or visor on their helmets just needed to be replaced. You know the chances to find something from a space sewage system are very high. It would be odd to think the otherwise. But this one didn’t looked like a creature from a horror movie…

Previously in this series: Ro Sham Bo!. If you're interested more about these fella's, you may wanna take a look what I've done with them earlier.

Moment of mystery continues. I’m trying to decide, whether I will show the stranger or not. Well, there are bigger problems on this Death Star, remember this series? Anyway I go, it’s the right decision. I don’t need to see the stranger’s identification and we all can move along, to another scene.

Norfolk Southern's "Honoring First Responders" SD60E #911 leads Bloomginton-to-Decatur train D36 west at Cerro Gordo, IL, which literally translates as "Fat Hill."

Thank you Wikipedia...

"When the Mexican American War began General John S Williams took command. At the battle of Cerro Gordo (Mexico) he led the troops in a victory over Mexican troops. He took the nickname of "Cerro Gordo" Williams. After the battle, he returned to Illinois and settled in Bement. About the same time (1855) the people of the town of Griswold chose to move the town from the stagecoach line along the river to the path of the Great Western Railroad. The town was platted by Sheridan Wait and Henry Durfee. "Cerro Gordo" Williams was one of the citizens, as they had other citizens that fought in the battle of Cerro Gordo, they selected the name Cerro Gordo."

Hmmm, I always wondered.

Ambulance services are measured on the time it takes from receiving a 999 call to the vehicle arriving at the patient's location. It should take 8 minutes for the ambulance to arrive if the call is life threatening or an emergency.

All 999 calls are given a colour code – red, amber or green – like traffic lights. The colour code that your call is given depends on what is wrong with the patient.

Red calls - Immediately life-threatening situation.

Amber calls - Life-threatening or serious.

Green calls - Not serious or life-threatening.

Excerpt from www.teamlab.art/ew/resonating_microcosms_mossgarden_plane...:

Moss Garden of Resonating Microcosms - Solidified Light Color, Dusk to Dawn

Ovoids that change appearance with the sunrise and sunset are laid out in the moss garden.

With sunrise, the ovoids begin to reflect the world around them. When pushed down by a person or blown by the wind, the ovoid falls back and then rises, releasing a resonating tone. The ovoids around it also respond one after another, continuing to resonate with the same tone.

As the sun sets, the ovoids shine by themselves. When an ovoid is pushed by a person or blown by the wind, it shines brightly and emits a sound tone, as it rights itself. The ovoids around it also respond one after another, emitting the same light color and sound tone that continues to resonate out.

The space of the work is interactively transformed under the influence of the wind, rain, and the behavior of the people in the space, making the environment and the people a part of the work. When the wind is quiet and people are still, the ovoids begin to flicker slowly.

teamLab is experimenting with the concept of color. The ovoids can change into a total of 61 newly-defined Solidified Light Colors.

It is said that mosses were the first terrestrial organisms to appear in a world of rocks and sand, where there was no life on land yet. As mosses and ferns appeared and forests were created, a variety of animals became able to live on land.

Since water inside cells is essential for living things, if the body lacks water, it will die. Mosses, on the other hand, are poikilohydric, meaning the water content in the cells change according to surrounding humidity levels. So moss will not die during long dry periods, and they come back to life when given water. Because mosses are poikilohydric, their color and shape change dramatically when the air is dry versus when it is wet, such as when there is rain or fog.

Tardigrades, which live in moss, also go into a non-metabolic state of dormancy when the surrounding environment becomes dry, but they revive and become active when there is water. The state that tardigrades enter, when they are neither living nor dead, is called cryptobiosis. This may cause us to consider what it means to be alive.

(hungry man in tenderloin, sf, 10/12/06)

hungry john quinn hunched over a trash can in the tenderloin. as i pass, he stands vacantly staring nowhere in particular. he wears a black leather jacket and hospital bottoms. there's darkness about his eyes; the whites aren't white, rather slight shades off his skin. but when the light catches, so do they.

i circle and return from another direction. he's grim and i expect dismissal. i ask if i can take his picture. he smiles and says "why sure you can." he has only a single tooth. he lives in a nearby "poorly ventilated" low income hotel. he just got out of the hospital and has been trying to get money for food. he had a heart attack. says he's had to quit smoking.

i ask about his blue eyes. if anyone else in his family has had them. says no, "just me and my mule"

there's an animation in him that he seems to save. and an intelligence that surprises. we talk of the time he met martin luther king in the airport leaving for india. we talk of his graduation from berkeley, his acceptance to law school, and the drug use which would take him elsewhere.

he talks of south africa's "honorary whites", india's untouchables, and sartre's essence of a man.

and he describes an exchange between south africa's botha and nelson mandela, when the latter was in prison. botha insists that mandela renounce violence as an alternative if he wishes release.

mandela refuses, responding that there is no alternative to life; and that he will do whatever is necessary to live.

> I am grateful for the attention this site has been given. I am particularly grateful for the generous and analytical comments of my flickr contacts and friends.

The price of such generosity is that one does not have the time to honorably respond to the inordinate number of creative images that arrive each and every day from as many contacts and friends as I have been fortunate to have.

Please add www.steveharperphotography.com to your address list to keep in contact as I will be adding information and current images just as soon as the Blog section is fine tuned.

One of the most important occupations a red truck could ever have, looks like a minor fire had just been taken care of by a volunteer Fire Department in this scene somewhere in California.

I am assuming that the “E” in the oval on the yellow license plate designates either “Emergency” or possibly “Exempt” ?, and that these plates would have been valid on Fire Trucks for many consecutive years.

And once again no information at all on this Kodachrome slide mount, I had tried to at least identify the town or city by the Realtors business name on the building but to no avail – But we can say that its 1:15 in the afternoon though !

My best guess on the year of this photo based on the equipment, apparel and overall look of the scene would be the early 1960s.

I sure do like those clean, bright red Fire Trucks !, a 1948-50 Ford over on the left and a handsome 1942-47 Dodge right up front.
