Honolulu night walk with Ricoh GRII

128 Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene of a fire that would consume two apartment buildings on Hollywood Boulevard

A single Crane is responding to the calling flock settled in below. It will join them in this nighttime roost group. Its lowered legs signify this intent. The settled Cranes continually call to the overhead birds, likely to increase their flock size... safety in numbers. Sunset often brings in a large influx of cranes that select this pond for their night-time roost. While the selection of a night-roost area for these birds in not predictable, this pond is often used. This is the magic half hour for any photographer. It's worth taking a chance to await their arrival here. The reflections and silhouette shots can be phenomenal! With such marginal lighting, you never know what has been captured until the editing session... just keep shooting and cull heavily! (I find that the low expense per shot is the primary advantage of digital photography... it took several years for me to change my frugal shooting habits!)

Norfolk Southern's "Honoring First Responders" unit, SD60E number 9-1-1, and Operation Lifesaver SD40-2 number 3501 passes through Natural Tunnel near Duffield, Virginia. The tunnel was created naturally, by the flowing waters of Stock Creek, and utilized by the Southern Railway as a passageway through the mountains for access to the Southwest Virginia coal fields. The locomotives are visiting the area as guests at Natural Tunnel State Park for their third annual Railroad Day celebration

At San Luis Obispo’s Fire Station # 1, a plaque near this artwork states, “This memorial commemorates the lives of those first responders who perished on September 11, 2001 and provides visitors with the opportunity to learn more about the men and women who sacrificed their lives so that others may live. Each rod represents one of the 403 emergency responder lives lost, communicating the scale of human loss.”

Responding out of Alnwick today

A pair of Cooper's hawks were hunting in a forest where they had nested 3 of the last 5 years. However the crows already had a nest there and it seemed they didn't want the hawks as neighbors. The crows were harassing the male who was communicating with this female who was responding even though her mouth was full. They eventually did leave.

At One New Yoirk Plaza, responding to an alarm

A woman paid me a delightful compliment. She had just got onto my bus home and clearly noticed my dress at once. She really did not have time to make out that I am trans before saying, quite spontaneously, "I love your dress!"

While absolutely thrilled to hear it, I was at a loss how to respond. Do I just say thank you? Do I tell her I was very lucky to get it in for £7 in the sale and risk starting a conversation? I would like to reply with a compliment to her, but nothing sprang instantly to mind. Can I even say anything to her without my voice giving me away?

By the time all these questions had come into my head and I had recovered from the surprise of being complimented by a stranger, the moment was gone. She sat elsewhere and I did not follow her.

I realise I must do better at speaking to strangers, better at accepting compliments graciously and better at returning them. I just was not ready this time, but perhaps I will be better next time.

I took a selfie to commemorate the day, which I managed unobtrusively because I was in the back seat of an almost empty bus.

Community First Responders are fully trained volunteers who attend 999 emergency calls in their own community. In the East Midlands, Community First Responders are dispatched by the EMAS (East Midlands Ambulance Service) Emergency Operations Centre in the same way as ambulances.

Because Community First Responders live in the local community, they can often arrive at the scene of the emergency much faster than an ambulance. If they arrive first on scene, Community First Responders can provide assessment and treatment for the patient before the arrival of the ambulance.

They don’t operate with Blue Lights and have to obey all the usual traffic regulations!

First Responder: professionelle ehrenamtliche Ersthelfer
