La decisione di costruire l'Amerigo Vespucci venne assunta nel 1925, allo scopo di sostituire l'omonima nave scuola della Classe Flavio Gioia, un incrociatore a motore e a vela, ormai prossimo alla radiazione, che fu posto in disarmo nel 1928[1] e ormeggiato nel porto di Venezia per essere adibito ad asilo infantile, riservato agli orfani dei marinai.
Il Vespucci fu progettato insieme al gemello Cristoforo Colombo nel 1930 dall'ingegnere Francesco Rotundi, tenente colonnello del Genio Navale e Direttore dei cantieri navali di Castellammare di Stabia (Napoli), riprendendo i progetti del veliero Monarca, l'ammiraglia della Real Marina del Regno delle Due Sicilie, poi ribattezzato Re Galantuomo quando fu requisito dalla Marina piemontese dopo l'invasione delle Due Sicilie. I progetti ricopiati erano dell'ingegnere navale napoletano Sabatelli ed erano custoditi a Castellammare di Stabia insieme alle tecnologie necessarie alla costruzione di questa tipologia di imbarcazione.
La nave-scuola fu varata il 22 febbraio 1931 a Castellammare di Stabia. Partì completamente allestita il 2 luglio alla volta di Genova dove, il 15 ottobre 1931, ricevette la bandiera di combattimento nelle mani del suo primo comandante, Augusto Radicati di Marmorito. Il suo compito fu quello di affiancare il Cristoforo Colombo nell'attività di addestramento, fino al termine della seconda guerra mondiale, quando per l'effetto degli accordi internazionali, il Cristoforo Colombo dovette essere ceduto all'URSS, quale risarcimento dei danni di guerra.
Dal 1946 al 1952 è stata l'unica nave scuola a vela della marina militare italiana fino all'entrata in servizio dell'Ebe, un brigantino goletta costruito nel 1921 ed acquistato dalla Marina Militare nel 1952. A partire dal 1955 e stata affiancata da un altro veliero acquistato dalla Francia e ribattezzato Palinuro. Attualmente l'Amerigo Vespucci è la più anziana nave della Marina Militare ancora in servizio.
Il motto della nave, ufficializzato nel 1978, è «Non chi comincia ma quel che persevera» ed esprime la sua vocazione alla formazione ed addestramento dei futuri ufficiali della Marina Militare. I precedenti motti sono stati: «Per la Patria e per il Re»; sostituito nel 1946 con «Saldi nella furia dei venti e degli eventi».
L'addestramento si svolge attraverso le Campagne Addestrative. Queste Crociere d'Istruzione, effettuate già 71 volte, avvengono con itinerari diversi; in particolare questa nave scuola si è recata in Nord Europa 37 volte, 20 in Mediterraneo, 4 in Atlantico Orientale, 7 in Nord America, 1 in Sud America e 1 circumnavigando il Globo.
Oltre all'addestramento in particolare nell'ultimo decennio, ha spesso avuto il compito di ambasciatore sul mare dell'arte, della cultura e dell'ingegneria italiana,[2] presentandosi in molti dei più importanti porti del mondo in particolari occasioni come ad Auckland (Nuova Zelanda) nell'ottobre 2002 in occasione della 31ª edizione dell'America's Cup e più recentemente ad Atene nel 2004 per le Olimpiadi ed a Portsmouth nel 2005 per la commemorazione della battaglia di Trafalgar ove ha avuto un ruolo di primo piano.
È un veliero che mantiene vive le vecchie tradizioni. Le vele sono ancora in tela olona, le cime sono tutte ancora di materiale vegetale, e tutte le manovre vengono rigorosamente eseguite a mano; ogni ordine a bordo viene impartito dal comandante, tramite il nostromo, con il fischietto; l'imbarco e lo sbarco di un Ufficiale avviene con gli onori al barcarizzo a seconda del grado dell'ospite.
Nel 2006, a 75 anni dall'entrata in servizio, ha ricevuto presso l'Arsenale Militare Marittimo della Spezia pesanti lavori di manutenzione con la sostituzione completa dell'albero di trinchetto per sopraggiunti limiti di usura, ricostruito fedelmente all'originale ricorrendo alle artigianali tecniche dell'epoca; la sostituzione di alcune lamiere a scafo richiodate da abili artigiani e la riconfigurazione del locale ausiliari con impianti di recente concezione.
Memorabile fu l'incontro con la portaerei americana USS Forrestal (CV-59).Dalla nave statunitense lampeggiò il segnalatore che chiese: “Chi siete?”.La risposta fu:“Nave scuola Amerigo Vespucci, Marina Militare Italiana”.Dalla USS Forrestal (CV-59):”Siete la più bella nave del mondo”.
[modifica] Tall Ship's Race
Ha partecipato nel 2000 alla Tall Ships' Race, la competizione che mette a confronto le Tall Ship, i velieri ad alti alberi delle Marine Militari di tutto il mondo.
In sei mesi l'Amerigo Vespucci ha percorso oltre 10.000 miglia, arrivando seconda, dietro la tedesca Gorch Fock.
La nave-scuola ha guidato i velieri italiani anche alle The Tall Ships' Races 2007 Mediterranea. L'Amerigo Vespucci ha partecipato alla manifestazione "IL MARE DEVE VIVERE", crociera ecologica del Mediterraneo svoltasi dal 9 aprile al 15 giugno 1978. In tale occasione la nave è approdata nei porti più importanti del Mediterraneo. Le Poste hanno dedicato all'evento una serie di quattro francobolli da L. 170 con un annullo speciale richiamante l'annullo del 20 aprile 1978, giorno dell'approdo nel porto di Cagliari.

Apparato motore:due motori Diesel Fiat B308 ESS accoppiati ad un motore elettrico di propulsione Marelli di 1491,4 kW, 1 elica a 4 pale fisse, quattro alternatori Diesel per l'energia elettrica.
[modifica] Equipaggio
L'equipaggio è composto da 14 ufficiali, 72 sottufficiali e 190 sottocapi e comuni. Nei mesi estivi imbarca anche gli allievi del primo anno dell'Accademia Navale di Livorno, circa 140 allievi, per un totale di circa 470 persone.
L'equipaggio ha compiti diversi ed è suddiviso in Servizio Operazioni (addetto a tutte le operazioni riguardanti la navigazione), Servizio Marinaresco (addetto alle operazioni varie alle imbarcazioni e di ormeggio e disormeggio), Servizio Dettaglio (gestisce le mense di bordo), Servizio Armi (custodisce le armi e si occupa dell'addestramento all'uso), Servizio Genio Navale/Elettrico (si occupa dell'apparato motore, dell'energia elettrica), Servizio Amministrativo/Logistico (predispone gli atti amministrativi e gestisce le cucine) e Servizio Sanitario (cura tutto il personale).

A norma di legge, i transatlantici hanno sempre la precedenza rispetto alle altre imbarcazioni navali. Per consuetudine, invece, quando un transatlantico incrocia l'Amerigo Vespucci, spegne i motori, rinuncia alla precedenza e rende omaggio suonando tre colpi di sirena, che equivalgono al saluto.

Il 15 giugno 1931 il Capitano di Vascello Augusto Radicati di Marmorito, ultimo comandante del precedente Amerigo Vespucci radiato nel 1928, assunse il comando della nuova unità. Anche la precedente unità aveva prestato servizio come nave scuola. Impostata il 9 dicembre 1879, nel Regio Arsenale di Venezia, e varata il 31 luglio 1882, iniziò la sua carriera come incrociatore a motore e a vela. Nel 1893 venne adattata a Nave Scuola per gli Allievi della Regia Accademia Navale, effettuando 26 Campagne d'Istruzione prima di essere posta in disarmo nel 1927, al termine di una Campagna Addestrativa nel Mediterraneo occidentale.

Tra i comandanti da ricordare Agostino Straulino, olimpionico di vela, che al comando della nave passò alla leggenda grazie all'uscita a vele spiegate dal porto di Taranto attraverso il canale navigabile e stabilì il record di velocità con 14,6 nodi. Altro comandante da ricordare è Ugo Foschini famoso per la risalita a vela del Tamigi sino a Londra.

La nave scuola Amerigo Vespucci ha tra le sue particolarità che tutti i comandi delle manovre da eseguire da parte dell'equipaggio, ed in particolare dai nocchieri vengono dati con l'uso del fischietto, chiamato "fischietto del nostromo",[4]
I nostromi che dal 1931 ad oggi, si sono avvicendati sulla nave sono stati solo sedici e sono ricordati da una targa ricordo posta sulla nave per iniziativa del Maresciallo Antioco Tilocca.[5]

New Year's Resolution: Her resolution is to not bark so much when she wants a treat! She's already spoiled beyond belief, but sometimes she wants a treat, and hasn't even done anything to deserve one! So what does she do? Bark until she gets one! :)

How We Met: She was at a Massachusetts Greyhound shelter until we found her; she was 4 at the time. Nobody would adopt her because she was a "jumper", however, it was just because she wanted a home! Now she rarely jump! Weoriginally came to view a different dog, but when we saw her, we knew it was meant to be!

-Started Post-Graduation (I don´t think that´s the correct name of it in English, but, oh, well)

1 Dutch Grammar Book
1 Band´s stage
1 Student´s work
1 Wedding (Yes *lol* I was amazed by that, and I wish someday I can see the picture of it)
And soon in another Photo Exhibition and the picture of the month of a Catholic website (When the picture displays there I´ll search for the correct address and give it to you)

Ira was the bad-boy door-man at the bar downstairs about 15 years ago. He came to my rescue more than a few times, intervening on my behalf with surly drunks who didn't think I belonged in or anywhere near their bar, and I nurtured a bit of a secret crush on him. Recently I've rediscovered him on facebook and am delighted to discover that he's become quite an outspoken political activist, and that his advanced door-man conflict resolution skills are being put to excellent use.

Man - I don't know what hit me but in the last month I've put on some serious weight. I have a scale in the bathroom that I use on occasion, but the other day I weighed myself and thought for sure the thing was broken. So needless to say, this means one of my New Year's Resolutions is to .... you guessed it .... lose some weight!
I guess it's pretty normal to gain some weight over the holidays, and it's even more normal for me to make resolutions that I don't end up keeping! But we'll see how it goes. Now the entire Flickr multi-verse knows exactly how much I weigh so there's some motivation to do something about it!
On a small side-note, since moving to the UK I've become accustomed to some new terms (as they say we're two countries divided by a common language). This scale is actually measuring kg's, but at the top you'll see "Stones" which is equivalent to 14 pounds. This comes from the units of measurement used throughout the Commonwealth in days gone-by. But it's still used pretty regularly, so if for some reason you're talking to a Brit and body weight is the topic, they'll say "I weigh 13 stone 4 pounds" and then leave it to your math skills to figure out what the heck they really weigh.....

It's that time of year again... New Year's resolutions need making. So, here goes:
1. Make more time for my hobbies. Including photography. I want to join in with We're Here more often too, so this photo is for today's theme of Walking. Also - new hobbies, like papercutting, and older ones like crochet - in 2018 I WILL make more time for the things I enjoy.
2. Be healthy. I did ok last year, but I can do better. I'm going to walk whenever I can, instead of driving, and get out to run regularly too. I'm not going to enter loads of races though - no pressure this year.
3. HAVE FUN.

Three-dimensional atomic-resolution tomographic imaging requires analyzing a microscopic sample viewed from several directions, followed by a computerized reconstruction of the sample’s 3-D atomic structure. Such an exacting process has eluded researchers for decades, but is now possible with the Transmission Electron Aberration-corrected Microscope (TEAM) Stage. It holds and positions samples inside electron microscopes with unprecedented stability, position-control accuracy, and range of motion.
The technology was developed by Thomas Duden, Nord Andresen, Rich Weidenbach, and Andreas Schmid of Berkeley Lab’s Engineering and Materials Sciences Divisions. Scientists from Attocube Systems, FEI Company, and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also contributed.
The TEAM Stage will make one of the world’s most powerful electron microscopes even better, and enable previously impossible experiments. Trial-and-error detection of defects in a thin-film nanocrystal solar cell material may be minimized; and the fabrication of new biomaterials for longer-lasting artificial bone implants may be facilitated.

Regarding the award-winning physicist Dr. Elliot McGucken at Princeton University, the late John Archibald Wheeler stated, "More intellectual curiosity, versatility and yen for physics than Elliot McGucken's I have never seen in any senior or graduate student. . . The great thing about the beach is that it presents an entirely different universe from season to season, from day to day, from hour to hour, from second to second, with the ever changing wind, tides, clouds, and sun. A split second with tumbling surf and a sinking sun can make a vast different, resulting in entirely different photographs.

The Pixel dimensions of the Nikon D810 are 7360 × 4912 pixels. The D810's pixel width of 7360 pixels is about 90% of the D850's pixel width of 8256 pixels. Thus, at 90%, it would be hard to tell the difference between photos taken with the two Nikons, except in the very largest prints perhaps! The D810 has 36.3 megapixels or 36 megapixels, while the D850 has 45.7 megapixels, or 46 megapixels.

George Barbier (1882–1932) became one of the most renowned French Art Deco illustrators after his exhibition of ninety costume drawings at the Galerie Boutet de Monval in Paris. Being a distinguished artist of the Art Deco movement, he created fashion designs for several leading couturiers and fashion houses during the time. Barbier was widely acclaimed for the design of costumes, jewelry, wallpaper, and glasswork. His creations were published in famous magazines including Gazette du Bon Ton, La Vie Parisienne, and Vogue. We have digitally enhanced his magnificent fashion plates from the gilded jazz age of 1920s for you to download for free and use under the CC0 license.
