9/18/2013. VPG's Vishay Foil Resistors brand (VFR) releases a new series of high-precision foil surface-mount current sensing flip chip resistors with low TCR down to ±10 ppm/°C from -55°C to +125°C, +25°C ref.; resistance down to 0.001 Ω; and tight tolerances to ±0.5%.

This is a switching power supply which probably cost about £30 from China. It's failure has killed a two grand display screen, and you can't get replacements.

 

Dave reckons one of the adjacent transistors has gone causing some spectacular overheating and burnout of this damaged resistor.

 

The problem we face is that we moved into a new building five and a half years ago and most of the stuff was new. That means it was bought and installed at the same time, and that means it all starts failing at about the same time too.

 

All good fun.

This is what it looks like inside the speed control assembly after about 30 years of constant use. Note that the resistor, which should be installed in the upper part of the assembly, has been removed.

 

You can see the capacitor installed in the lower part of the assembly; it's the brown cylinder with numbers and letters on the side. The original resistor is also cylindrical, though made of a ceramic material, and fits between the open connectors you can see in the top portion of the assembly.

Added 68nF capacitors in parallel with feedback resistors to reduce the amplitude of LFOs at higher frequencies. This gives a more constant modulation depth as the LFO frequency is increased.

 

I removed the two 10uF capacitors on the audio output lines. You can see four holes near the output sockets where they were. I then added 470R series resistors (not seen in this photo) to the output of the final op-amps. Although this does increase output offset slightly it is still below 10mV. The resistors prevent the output op-amp from oscillating with cable capacitance. Remember I have no HPF stage on my unit and the output of the summing amplifier goes straight to the relay.
