WWII veterans residing at Morris View Healthcare Center were honored Aug. 12 as part of a nationwide “Spirit of ‘45”celebration recognizing the anniversary of August 14, 1945, the day President Harry Truman announced the end of World War II. The Morris View event was sponsored by VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in cooperation with the Morris County Department of Human Services and the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Here, some of the veterans and dignitaries wait for the program to begin.

The original Pegasus Bridge now resides in the grounds of the Pegasus Museum. The museum was inaugurated by HRH The Prince of Wales on 4 June 2000, Brigadier James Hill, Françoise Gondrée foundress with General Sir Richard Nelson Gale as Président and lies at the Eastern end of the current bridge. The original bridge was replaced in 1994 by the wider, stronger structure, built by Spie Batignolles. It had been extended by 5 metres in the early 1960s to accommodate the widening of the canal and remained in use until 1993. After its replacement, Pegasus Bridge was left on waste ground. The bridge was sold to the museum for the symbolic price of one Franc.
Many of the soldiers killed in the actions of June 1944 are buried in the war cemetery at Ranville. Lt. Brotheridge's grave, which is located in the churchyard next to the cemetery, has a commemorative plaque that was installed by the Gondrée family. The museum contains a café and a small museum shop that sells Pegasus Bridge related material. Arlette Gondrée, who now runs Café Gondrée, was a small child living in the home when it was liberated. It is not certain that the famous Gondrée café was the first French house to be liberated during D-Day.
The parish "Saint Friday - Pajura" has as protectors the Holy Martyrs Brâncoveni and the Pious Saints Parascheva from Iasi (Saint Friday) and Teodora from Sihla.
The parish ensemble resides in the Pajura neighborhood, on Băiculești street no. 27. It includes the "old" wooden church, the new church and the socio-cultural settlement of the Holy Martyrs Brâncoveni.
The initiator of the construction of the new parish in Pajura and the main founder of the wooden church from which, later, he drew his sap and the large stone church was Mr. Vasile Vișinescu, nephew of a priest and son-in-law of a priest, who was also among the founders of the church from Tomșanca (Argeș county) during the difficult years for Orthodoxy in Romania before 1989.
The wooden church in Pajura was started through his donations, he having the main material contribution for the construction of the church among the parishioners.
Moreover, through his way of being and through his relationships, he gathered around him and the church construction project people willing to lend a hand and get involved in the establishment of a new place of worship in this part of Bucharest - Pajur residents, but also people from the other end of the city, people from Bucharest and Arges or living in other cities, residents or settled in foreign lands.
In fact, they (relatives, friends, neighbors, colleagues or simple acquaintances conquered by his fervor) occupy almost entirely the first 20 places in the list of founders of the wooden church, a list located inside the church, to the left of the entrance door.
Equally important, Mr. Vișinescu had the inspiration to see in Father Radu Iliniu (he was fondly embraced as the parish priest of the church which at that time did not even exist on paper, but only in the minds and souls of the initiators) the one who was to become only the worthy shepherd of the faithful of Pajura, who long wished to have a priest close to their spiritual needs and to be able to worship in a church in the neighborhood, but also, as he often said, his third child.
From the beginnings of the parish until his death in 2009, Mr. Vișinescu constantly had the initiative and always consulted with Father Iliniu for all major events that depended on or that completed the identity of the new church.
Vasile Vișinescu initiated and was directly involved, together with the church committee, in the most important milestones in the arduous but rewarding effort of establishing the Pajura parish:
obtaining approval from the Patriarchate for the new parish and for the construction of the wooden church;
obtaining the land from the mayor's office (land proposed by his wife, Mrs. Elena Vișinescu, as the most suitable for the church, contrary to what was initially identified by Mr. Vișinescu and Father Iliniuu after they had scoured the entire Pajura neighborhood, and which later allowed the construction of the parish office and the large stone church)
obtaining construction approvals;
choosing the patron of the church and obtaining the vestment that was on the relics of Saint Pious Parascheva from Iași; And so on
Over time, the wooden church became too spacious, but a new, large and unspeakably beautiful church arose from its roots, dedicated to the "Holy Martyrs Brâncoveni", built between 2006 and 2014 with the support of the District 1 City Hall.
The dedication service of the place of worship was performed on October 14, 2014 by His Beatitude Father Daniel, Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
The foundation stone of the church was laid in 2007, on the Feast of the Annunciation.
Forseven years, under the protection of the Holy Trinity and the Holy Martyrs Brâncoveni, sustained and consistent work has been carried out, with the support of the District 1 City Hall, represented by Mr. Mayor Andrei Chiliman, but also the material and spiritual support of the faithful of the parish.
On October 14, 2014, the Holy Friday Pajura Parish put on festive clothes.
The new church was consecrated by the Blessed Father Daniel, the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, surrounded by a council of priests and deacons and many believers.
Kaweah was once the home of a socialist utopian colony established back in 1886. the colony ceased to exist after 1892. Kaweah is also the home of one of the state's oldest operating post offices, number 389 of California's state historical landmarks.
Kaweah is nestled in the hills leading up to the entrance of Sequoia National Park.

A collection of earth from my travels resides in a set of spice jars in my studio. I sometimes use it as slip on clay work. Or mixed in the paint on my mandalas. One of my favorites is a jar of red clay (on right) I collected with my mom and sister on a trip to Georgia. It was raining the day before we left to drive home. We stopped at the edge of a ballpark where I played as a child and scooped a little clay into a box. The Georgia clay has made it into many art pieces over the years. In this row, the second jar from right is from Montana. The third is mica from New Mexico.
