The long-tail boat, used to carry passengers on a river may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 metres. They are not the quietest or most comfortable boats to travel in but usually the cheapest and most fun.

Wood Warbler - Phylloscopus sibilatrix

The wood warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix) is a common and widespread leaf warbler which breeds throughout northern and temperate Europe, and just into the extreme west of Asia in the southern Ural Mountains.

This warbler is strongly migratory and the entire population winters in tropical Africa.

It is a summer visitor to the United Kingdom, seen from April until August. It has declined there in recent years. It is now very rare in Ireland, where only one or two pairs are recorded breeding in most years, usually in County Wicklow.

Various factors associated with forest structure, including slope, forest cover, proportion of broad-leaf forest, canopy height and forest edge length, all influenced the occupancy rates of this declining forest species. Conservation measures are therefore required that provide and maintain the wood warblers preferred forest structure. There is also a preference for forest in the non-breeding season, however this habitat is declining in wintering areas such as Ghana. Despite the decline in forest habitats, there has been no change in number of wood warblers as it appears that this species can use degraded habitats, such as well-wooded farms. However, further loss of trees will likely have a negative impact on this species in the future

Shot for Our Daily Challenge :“Cut, Cutting, and Cutter”

The photo shows a red capped Russula mushroom growing in moss on the forest floor.

Russula mushrooms are fairly common and have a worldwide distribution. They are invariably ectomycorrhizal in that they form an intricate and beneficial association with many diverse plants (including trees). Through a network of strands (mycelia) the fungus facilitates uptake of water and nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus to the plant host but requires energy (in the form of sugars) in return.

For more information on ectomycorrhizal associations see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ectomycorrhiza

The “Carapace” – as Arnaldo Pomodoro decided to call his winery – required no less than six years’ building work and it was inaugurated and opened to the public – for visits and tastings – in June 2012. It is a unique work of art that calls into question the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. It is the first sculpture in the world in which people can live and work, a unique work in which art and nature, sculpture and wine intermingle, underlining the exceptional nature of both the containing structure and of its contents. It offers itself to one’s gaze as a large copper-covered dome, engraved with fissures that remind one of the furrows in the earth that surrounds it. A sculpted element in the form of a red dart plunging into the soil highlights the work’s place in the landscape. Entering the “Carapace” means penetrating into one of Pomodoro’s sculptures, and one is aware right away of his artistic alphabet, which is immediately recognizable in the internal vault. This is a distinctive, special winery for distinctive, special wines.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to fave, comment or simply view my uploads over the last 12 months - I hope you've enjoyed them and, as always, your time is very much appreciated. Merry Christmas, and my best wishes to you and yours for a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

This shot was originally uploaded 9 years ago and captured back in 1976 when I made a day trip down to Reading chasing the fast-disappearing class 52 Westerns. Less than 2 months later they would all be gone and the diesel-hydraulic era, heralded as the modern replacement for steam on the Western Region, would come to an end little more than 11 years after the last steam locomotives ran on these metals.

Thankfully I had film to spare that day and, in frosty and foggy conditions, I captured this image of a 3H class 205 DEMU no. 1130 as it approached one of the bay platforms out of the gloom with a service from Basingstoke. The headcode 66 was correct for this service. No rework was required on this occasion, but I did delete the original upload.

The steep steps to the lighthouse made for an adventure that required a hand on the rail as gusty winds whipped by.

More information about the Cape Palliser Lighthouse:

Position: Latitude 41° 36.8’ south Longitude 175° 17.4 East

This light shone for the first time on 27th October 1897. The lighthouse is notable for the 261 steps it takes to reach it. When these steps were first built they were greeted enthusiastically as they replaced a slippery narrow path up the rock face that was especially dangerous at night.

The cast iron tower stands 18 metres high and 78 metres above sea level. The light flashes twice every 20 seconds and can be seen for 26 nautical miles (48 kilometres).

The 1000-watt lamp operates on mains electricity with a diesel generator for standby power. The light originally burnt oil as a light source and was converted to diesel generated electricity in 1954, and then to mains electricity in 1967.

The light was fully automated in 1986 and the lighthouse keeper was withdrawn.

The operation of the light is now completely automatic and is monitored by a computer and Maritime NZ staff in Wellington.

Sometimes my photos require “Getting Close” to the subject physically. Lying on top of pile of leaves or wading in shallow waters. Remaining always safe there’s not much I haven’t tried yet to “Get That Shot, lol” From the top of the Empire State Building in NYC to a Native American Celebration in New Mexico and many cool places in between. Passion drives us to get our next fun capture. Thanks for viewing my work. Stay safe, mask up and go get your next great capture. 🙏

A woman walked down to the shore of the green space with her dog, off leash. The dog proceeded to run out after this egret, causing it to relocate. She tried calling it back, but it would have nothing to do with her. She needs to use that leash, as required by law!!! First comment is moments before, as the dog charges...

Can a house be semi-abandoned? Aspects of the place appeared to be looked after, others not so much. For example, the broken window in the kitchen, which had glass pieces on the sill.

i stood quiet and still, leaning on the gate of a barn at Adam's — who i'd just delivered logs to — hoping her curiosity would draw her. Sure enough she got closer and closer. Smelly breath, but easily tolerable for this gorgeous animal.

Warning! Sunglasses may be required to view this series :-))

What a stunning, almost unbelievable, sight!!

Every year, the 2 blocks of Cambridge St between Slocan and Kamloops St burst into a dazzling red archway. This year, it was discovered by the Asian community and they have flocked in to have their pictures taken for good luck. And it has been a spectacular year especially because it has been so dry and sunny. Enjoy your virtual "walk" through the "Cambridge Maple Arch" in E. Vancouver, BC. :)

This is the V.M 1934 zz rod by Vix motors... I just had to make a decent picture of it. Only one minor edit was required in PS, the bottom of the fold up hood was only partial shaded so my partner Tam fixed it, ain't she a peach.. ohh la la.

I saw the garage scene at Backdrop Village (maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Eversong/218/202/2204) and decided to pop on overalls and make myself look like a gearhead. Nothing in reality could be further from the truth.

I am far too short for the built in animations. I had to rez a box to stand on and add a pose of my own.
