This little waterfall probably has more people seeing it than many in the area just because of it's location. And most people pass it without hardly paying attention to it. It's small and unobtrusive. I like it because it can have some of the most brilliant greens surrounding it than anywhere else in the gorge. And most of these greens people aren't able to trample or they surely would. So here is my second take on this little guy in the last three years when Danilo and I ventured up a couple of weeks ago.

Arches National Park, Utah. The Fiery Furnace is a natural labyrinth of narrow sandstone canyons and fins. There are no marked trails and the area has suffered resource damage due to increased visitation. Navigating its complex passages requires physical agility and careful observation. Hikers who want to explore the Fiery Furnace are encouraged to sign up for a ranger-guided hike at the Visitor Center. In order to visit the Fiery Furnace without a ranger, one must obtain a permit at the Visitor Center (fee charged) and watch a minimum impact video. Children under 5 are not permitted. The Bright Angel Trail is the best developed trail down into the canyon and is traveled not only by hikers, but also by mule caravans carrying riding guests or supplying stations in the canyon. Hikers are required to make way for the mules. Behind a caravan, considerable amounts of dust hang in the air for a long time.
From Indian Garden you can walk almost level for about 2.5 km to the viewpoint Plateau Point, from where you can see into the depth of the canyon and onto the Colorado River.
It requires a fair bit of hiking and trekking to get to these magnificent waterfalls, but they are truly worthwhile. They are located behind the sacred Daisen mountain.

Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis), is also known as the crab-eating Macaque.
When we came across this macaque, she already had the orange peel. Probably discarded by someone treking the trail. Even though it was only the peel, she became overly possesive about keeping it. She was quite worried that I would steal it from her. She still was carrying it around 30 minutes later.

My sister rescued Dingo a few years ago and you couldn't ask for a better dog. He's my sister's baby.... does that make Dingo my nephew?
The light was really nice, so I grabbed the nearest camera and took a few photos of Dingo. Later, I zoomed in close for a critical look and noticed something odd. I thought, hmmm, I don't think Dingo has dandruff. I checked out the dog and the photos some more and then googled 'bright pixels' and sure enough, there is a sensor defect resulting in 'stuck' pixels. So, there you go, now my old SX10IS is defective. Well, I can live with that amount of defective pixels, I suppose... but there are quite a few of them that will always require some cloning out.
Our ascent from Baker Lake required a climb up a relatively steep snow filled gully. Mark is seen here a good way up the initial climb. At this point we would still have a hike of a couple of hours before we would reach the summit of Trapper Peak.

Good thing I got my shot when I did. As the train arrived an employee got off the train and asked me for my permit. "Permit?", I said. He explained to me that I needed a permit from CTA in order to have my camera and tripod on the platform. "Oh ok... I'm from Ohio..." The Carrollton was originally built as a dorm for defunct Shimer College, which moved to Chicago in the late '70s.
This odd-looking gem is a columnar snowflake, which are more common than you might imagine at the beginning and end of winter where the temperatures are warmer. View large!
The reason why you might not see these crystals is because of their size and difficulty to photograph. Measuring between 0.5mm and 2mm long, this type of snowflake is much smaller than most, and also more three dimensional. Higher magnifications are required and focus stacking becomes incredibly complex as the depth and edges of all sides are viewable through the transparent structure.
It’s tough to describe exactly what most of these lines and shapes define, but let’s see if I can describe at least one: what sticks out the farthest grows the fastest. In a more traditional snowflake you can see this by branches forming at the corners because they stick out farther and accumulate new water vapour faster, but in this scenario we have a good look at the other facets of the crystal and how they are affected by the same “rule”.
You might notice some echoing rectangular shapes, as well as little “crowning” elements near the top of the crystal along the outer edges. The rectangles form because the center of the facet grows slower than the outer edges, becoming indented and creating a surface where the center of each facet is recessed and all of the “framework” surrounding it protrudes further out. This is the exact same way that bubbles from inside of normal snowflakes.
With a keen eye and knowing what exactly to look for here, you would also be able to tell than the crystal is hollow. There are conical cavities that grow larger towards the top and the bottom for the same reason. All formed in a few short minutes!
This snowflake was photographed WELL beyond the limits of standard macro photography. At 12:1 magnification (12 times closer than your normal macro lens will get), you push up against certain limitations of physics (the diffraction of light, specifically) that limit resolution, and depth of field doesn’t really exist. The shooting technique is much the same as for “regular” snowflakes, lit with a ring flash and focus stacked to get everything needed. Only 20 shots were required for this one to cover the depth from forward to back, but with so many transparent interactions, much of the process needs to be done manually.
I have the components on my way to me that will allow the construction of a 20:1 lens based around a microscope objective so that I may get greater detail in the tiniest snowflakes. You’ll see this new gear put to use as soon as it’s assembled!

We ate at The Reserve in Old Town Scottsdale to celebrate my wife's birthday. It is part of the Café Monarch family. Café Monarch is larger, elegant, and romantic. The Reserve is more intimate with superb food. IMHO Michelin 2 star quality. We judge the dining experience is well worth the time and cost. Café Monarch will be our restaurant for our anniversary. The Reserve will be our restaurant for my wife's birthday.
