Was at the local recycling centre looking for something else entirely and came away with an old, very large, large format camera.

Seemed to be mostly intact and at fifty bucks it was a no brainer.

The lens is a Boyer-Paris Saphir 300mm f/4.5 on a Compound shutter mounted on a plywood fixed box light chamber.

There was loads of dirt, grime and haze on all three groups of the Tessar-type lens. It had four or so loose blades out of the 24 blade iris and the shutter speeds (50 - 1 sec, T and B) were toast.

From the rigid film chamber and the various flanges and base used in the setup, my mate (the other Nige) guessed the camera had probably been used for photographic reproduction. Film size around 12" x 12".

Much love, much elbow grease later and today I put it all back together to see what was what. I bodgied up a focus screen from a negative strip holder and some plywood (seemed appropriate). The fixed focus distance was only around 34" but wrangling it to permit infinity focus reduced the workable image to around 8-1/2" x 7".

My simple tests today (pointed out the door from the dining room table and wide open) showed that it is seriously sharp - the left hand pic does not do it justice as everything is just glue and bus-ticket... Will make a mounting board and maybe make or source a bellows for it eventually and figure out a better focus screen.

Sadly I have no local history for the beast. There's a fair bit on the web about the Boyer-Paris lenses and I think this one dates from just after WWII.

Both images made with Fuji X-T1 and Contax Zeiss G 45mm f/2 Planar Frankenzeiss lens. Took hours of fiddling to get one acceptable image shot through the lens!!

A mix of real and reproduction Bronze age pastoral tools. All images were photographed through glass with a mix of museum lighting and lenses, before being prepared for a PS montage.

Top left : reproduction from the Perth museum

Top left under : real from the Perth museum

Central: reproduction from the museum of London

Hand scythe: British museum

Halbard and right: Museum of London

Lower left : Tende museum (under Mont Bégo).

As with the rock art of Mont Bego, with its multiple representations of Bronze age tools, the above images are arranged without a respect for relative scale.

Trade may have exchanged bronze tools into the mountainous valleys around Mont Bégo, and depictions of tool outlines that appear be typical of distant regions may not prove that the people of that area were responsible for stations of the Mont Bégo rock art.

Slicing a sprig during the weave of a basket, sharpening a point onto a stick to plant for a stretch, cutting a thin string of leather, preparing a slice of meat, trimming a bundle of straw into a thatch, scraping off the thorns from bramble fibres - these are the variable uses of a crofter's knife. Today they are often called weapons or arms and the militarised term 'dagger' can load into the subject. Whist these bladed items may have been used against problems with bandits and occasional larger dispute, the term 'dagger' over-runs the day-to-day of a crofters pastoral life and overshadows reality as might the use of the term 'crown' for a hat.

Horsefly bites are painful. Some people develop serious allergies to horsefly bites, but this is rare. Avoiding horseflies can be difficult outdoors in summer.

Horseflies are a flying insect found most in rural, farmland areas, where they feed on large mammals.

Scientists call horseflies blood-feeding arthropods. The scientific name for their family of species is Tabanus.

Horseflies must bite large animals - including horses, cattle, dogs, and humans - as part of their lifecycle.

Only female horseflies bite. Male horseflies do not have the mouthparts that females use to bite animals. Females do this to drink the blood that they need to produce their eggs.

Female horseflies need a large amount of blood for reproduction - up to 0.5 milliliters. Scientists estimate that they can take up as much as 200 milligrams of blood in a few minutes.

Compared with other insect bites, horsefly bites are particularly painful and slow to heal. This is because of the way the flies bite.

The bite from a horsefly:

Is a cut type of wound, rather than a small puncture hole

The mouthparts of the horsefly use a scissor-like action to create a wound in our skin

The fly "mops up" the bleed after cutting through the skin

The fly anchors to the skin while drinking the blood, with the help of small hooks along its mouthparts

Not to Be Reproduced ( La reproduction interdite ) is an oil on canvas painting by the Belgian surrealist artist René Magritte, The painting was commissioned by poet and Magritte patron Edward James in 1937, and is considered to be a portrait of James although his face is not depicted. The work depicts a man standing in front of a mirror, his reflection is not rendered correctly, as it also shows him from behind, also the lighted candle is not shown lit in its reflection. This is my interpretation and tribute to the famous painting

Currently owned by the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.

Plant reproduction is the production of new offspring in plants, which can be accomplished by sexual or asexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction produces offspring by the fusion of gametes, resulting in offspring genetically different from the parent or parents.

"The Creation of Adam" (ICreazione di Adamo), also known as "The Creation of Man", is a fresco painting by Italian artist Michelangelo (Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564)), which forms part of the Vatican's Sistine Chapel ceiling, Painted from  1508 to 1512, it illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man. The fresco is part of a complex scheme and is chronologically the fourth in the series of panels depicting episodes from Genesis.

The painting has been reproduced in countless imitations and parodies. Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" is one of the most replicated religious paintings of all time.

Old Believers (Russian: староверы; starovery) is a collective name for traditional Christian groups in Russia that have become detached from the Russian Orthodox state church through their protest against the ecclesiastical reforms of 1666-67. These reforms included a number of innovations in rites and texts that were intended to standardize the Russian church with the then Byzantine church. Until 1905, old believers were often referred to by the state and the Russian Orthodox Church as the pejorative raskolniki ("cleavers" or "schismatics").
