Take a ride alongside the 2016 Bartlett Cup sailing log canoe races that took place on Sunday, September 18, 2016.
The Edward L. Bartlett Cup, a silver repousse’ punch bowl, was originally presented to the commodore of the Baltimore Yacht Club in 1905. When donated to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, it was re-purposed as a perpetual trophy for a museum-sponsored log canoe race, typically the last race of the log canoe season on the Miles River.
CBMM has sponsored this race, which is supported on the river by the Miles River Yacht Club’s Sail Committee, since 1972.

King Charles IX's ceremonial shield
Goldsmith: Pierre Redon
Paris, circa 1572
Iron repousse and engraved gold plate; translucent and opaque enamels
Reverse: velvet embroidered with gold
Acquired in 1793 for the Central Museum of Arts (future Museum of the Louvre)
Shield of Charles IX
In the 16th century, fine weaponry became popular in the great courts of Europe. The house of Valois spent lavishly on ceremonial weapons. The helmet (MR 426) and shield belonging to Charles IX (1550–1574) were made by the goldsmith Pierre Redon. They are among the few surviving examples of fine weaponry from the French Renaissance.
The goldsmith's art
The shield and matching helmet were the work of Pierre Redon, who was goldsmith to the Valois court and valet to the king. We know they are the work of Pierre Redon thanks to records showing that his widow, Marie de Fourcroy, received payment for them in 1572. Both the shield and the helmet are outstanding examples of the goldsmith's art. The shield is made of embossed iron, plated with gold and decorated in places with enamels in translucent green, red, and blue and opaque white. The enameled ornamentation is applied in light touches on the raised parts of the embossed shield. The reverse side is covered in crimson velvet embroidered with arabesques of gold thread.
Battle scene
In the center of the shield is a medallion depicting a battle scene, with soldiers on horseback in combat outside a besieged citadel and a camp. This is a depiction of the final battle between Marius (157–86 BC) and Jugurtha (160–104 BC), as the Latin inscription indicates. The Roman consul defeated the Numidian army, and King Jugurtha, abandoned by his supporters, was captured and taken to Rome. The choice of this scene is a reminder of the influence of Greek and Roman antiquity on the Renaissance. Apart from the battle scene, the whole shield is edged with a frieze of a laurel garland interspersed with thirty-two cloisonné enamel and gold medallions featuring alternately flowers and the letter K for Karolus (Charles in Latin).
Ornamentation borrowed from the School of Fontainebleau
Between the central medallion and the trim round the edge, the shield is decorated with various motifs: scrolls, intertwining patterns, war trophies, rinceaux, sprays of fruit, grotesque masks, and friezes. Above the medallion are the head of the Medusa and two groups of defeated warriors on cannons taken as trophies. Typical of Mannerism and the first School of Fontainebleau, these motifs match the historical depiction of the battle. The model for this ornamentation is unknown, although it is very similar to engravings by Etienne Delaune.

Pair of silver scyphi (cups) with relief decoration
Roman;Late Republic or Julio-Claudian, late 1st century BC - 1st half of the 1st century AD
Drinking cups richly decorate with gilding and repousse reiefs were some of the most prized possessions that Romans aspired to have. They served for both use and show, and they were generally made in pairs. These illustrate the kind of naturalistic ornaments of fruit and foliage - here grapes and vine leaves - that came into fashion in late Hellenistic times and remained popular through the Julio-Cladian period. Such decoration was used not only on silver cups but also on cameo glass examples, although the latter have survived only as fragments.

A silver-adorned gentleman's salakot
Estimate: PHP 50,000 - 60,000
19th century
Bulacan
Bamboo, silver and brass ornaments, fabric
18 x 33 cm (7 x 13 in)
The custom of wearing dome-shaped salakot or native hat started during the Spanish era. Ordinary farmers will wear salakot made from bamboo, rattan or palm reeds, while the more affluent like the gobernadorcillos and cabezas de barangay will wear something adorned with precious metals like gold and silver. This example is made of bamboo, the helm is lined with segmented fabric, decorated around the brim with roses and leaves. Around the center dome is a circular scalloped cap with more flowers, foliates, beads and reels - all made from repoussé and chased silver. The spire or finial is an old replacement made of brass.

What do you think of when you see a crumpled piece of paper? Should it be thrown away? What does it contain...a love letter, angry words, precious information?
This is my chasing and repousse piece for my Camouflage project...so many times we think to say something to someone else, but think better of it, and throw the thought away. Perhaps it is words of love, or anger, etc. There are many reasons to discard those thoughts and emotions, but they never really disappear.
This piece reflects on the permanence of those emotions and thoughts, even when they are crumpled up to be thrown away.
These are in-progress shots...on the back side of the piece (it's a brooch) will be a pocket containing a necklace that has quotes on it that I have tried to throw away, yet they always remain in my memory.
