Fort-Dauphin (Madagascar) - The old French port consists of only a simple quay. It has long been neglected in favor of a more modern deep-water port, built several kilometers south of the city.

The fishermen had gotten into the habit of mooring their canoes on the sand near the quay of the old colonial port. A small community of homeless people had squatted in the few dilapidated shacks. A micro-society, tolerated by the local authorities, discreetly animated the place.

The recent resumption of commercial activity at the port has pushed these “informal residents” of the port a little further. They now live alongside dock workers, sailors and truckers. During boardings, life goes on.

This sterling silver hairbrush made in Birmingham in 1903 is just one piece out of a very substantial dressing table set that includes hairbrushes, mirrors, a looking glass, a tray, a comb, clothes brushes, perfume bottles, a glove hook, a perfume bottle opener, a boot hook, a shoe horn, a manicure set, powder pots, a needle case, an appointment book, a miniature Bible, a hair tidy, a hatpin container, an appointment book and even a letter opener, all of which belonged to one of my Great, Great Aunts. All of them feature elegant and ornate repoussé work of a very high standard. Each item depicts a beautiful Art Nouveau maiden in profile with long flowing tresses that twist and curl about her as she stands amid some sunflowers, plucking blooms. This style of design is typical of the curvilinear floral and female motifs so popular during the Art Nouveau period, epitomised by artists like Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt. As a child, I called the Art Nouveau lady on these pieces, Clytie, after the Greek mythological legend of Clytie the sea nymph who fell in love with Apollo and was transformed into a sunflower.

The theme for the 11th of December “Looking Close… on Friday” is “brush”. I thought this silver backed hairbrush made by the Birmingham silversmiths Levi and Salaman in 1903 was an elegant choice. I hope that you will agree. The hairbrush features a pad of boar bristles which were stiff enough to brush the thick and long hair grown by Edwardian women to form the ornate and stylish ‘transformations’ (hairstyles) of the first decade of the Twentieth Century.

This hairbrush is hallmarked with the initials “L.&S.” which are the initials for the silversmiths Levi and Salaman. Founded in 1870 by Phineas Harris Levi in partnership with Joseph Wolff Salaman the two men established a silversmiths firm. They later became proprietors of the Potosi Silver Company in 1878. The firm became Levi and Salaman in the early Twentieth Century and became Levi and Salaman Ltd. in 1910. In 1921 the firm was amalgamated into Barker Brothers Silversmiths Limited.

History: Eus smells of the aromas of orchards, ancient olive groves and guarrigue. Built in a terrace shape, sheltered from the wind, its name comes from the green oaks (yeuses) that border the village.

Conceived for defence, Eus successfully repelled the French in 1598 and the Spaniards in 1793. St Vincent’s church (18th century) stands where a Roman camp used to be. The roman-style chapel is dedicated to the saint patron of wine-makers. It opens onto a 13th marble porch. (source: www.cometofrance.com)

Description de l'image

Inspired by the style of the Moscow churches, the interior has a very rich decoration, adorned with multiple icons, frescoes, carved woodwork and an iconostasis in metal repoussé and chiseled.

St. Nicholas Cathedral was built in the early twentieth century under the patronage of the last Tsar Nicholas II and his mother Empress Dowager Marie Feodorovna. The cathedral is the most beautiful religious building of this rite outside of Russia and the most perfect representation of Russian religious art abroad.

. . or more correctly, it's belly. Thailand's Erawan Museum: interior of the "earth", the domed building.

The two pillars on either side are made of tin repoussé by expert craftsmen from Nakornsrithammarat and Chiangmai. There are four pillars in all, representing the gratefulness and four principal religions supporting the world. The materials in the repoussé include flat tin sheet, resin and wax, lead wire and plasticine (to allow punching the tine for detail).

Stained glass is the art of Western Culture which has been used to decorate the ceiling of the Dome building or the Earth level below the "beast", the elephamt itself. The stained glass work is in semi-abstract form presenting the Earth with five continents, the sun and the twelve signs of the Zodiac.

The interior beautifully molded stucco inside the Museum used natural materials because ancient stucco dries slowly so making decorative lines is easier than on cement. Bencharong (five coloured porcelain) complements the artwork. Stucco is made from fluorite stone, lime, red sand stone, lime mixed with turmeric and water, glue made from buffalo skin cane sugar, sticky rice, straw paper dipped in water, fine sand.

The result: a 29 metres high, 39 metres long, 12 metres wide, 250 ton three headed elephant that you can enter!

The Statue of Liberty is an icon, a national treasure, and one of the most recognizable figures in the world. Each year millions who cherish her ideals make the journey to experience her history and grandeur in person. She is the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and hope.

The Statue of Liberty was built in France between 1875 and 1884. The 225 Ton statue was disassembled and shipped to New York City in 1885. The statue was reassembled on Liberty Island in 1886, although the torch has been redesigned or restored several times since its installation. The statue would undergo many changes and improvements over the years. In 1907, the first elevator was installed inside it, and in 1916, it was illuminated for the first time after being converted to electric power. It would go dark for two years during World War II, due to blackout regulations. The torch was replaced entirely in the 1980s.

In 1865 Frenchman , a political intellectual , Édouard de Laboulaye proposed the idea of presenting a monumental gift from the people of France to the people of The United States. Sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi was in attendance for Laboulaye’s proclamation. Of like mind with Laboulaye’s cause, Bartholdi began conceptualizing the colossal structure that would soon be known as Liberty Enlightening the World. Bartholdi was designing the Statue, he also took a trip to the United States in 1871. During the trip, Bartholdi selected Bedloe's Island as the site for the Statue. Although the island was small, it was visible to every ship entering New York Harbor, which Bartholdi viewed as the "gateway to America.

A huge amount of cash was required to build her. The Fund raising process begun. Despite these efforts, fundraising for the pedestal went slowly. To spark public action, in 1885, Joseph Pulitzer placed an ad in his paper the New York World inviting readers to donate to the cause. In exchange, Pulitzer printed each donor’s name in the newspaper. The public rose to the challenge with 120,000 people donating over $100,000 and securing the remaining funds needed for the Statue’s pedestal.

In 1876, French artisans and craftsmen began constructing the Statue in France under Bartholdi's direction. The arm holding the torch was completed in 1876 and shown at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The head and shoulders were completed in 1878 and displayed at the Paris Universal Exposition. The entire Statue was completed and assembled in Paris between 1881 and 1884. Also in 1884, construction on the pedestal began in the United States.

After the Statue was presented to Levi P Morton, the U.S. minister to France, on July 4, 1884 in Paris, it was disassembled and shipped to the United States aboard the French Navy ship, Isère. The Statue arrived in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885, and was met with great fanfare. Unfortunately, the pedestal for the Statue was not yet complete and the entire structure was not reassembled on Bedloe's Island until 1886.

Once the pedestal was completed in 1886, the Statue was reassembled with surprising speed by a fearless construction crew - many of whom were new immigrants. The first piece of the Statue to be reconstructed was Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel's iron framework. The rest of the Statue's elements followed without the use of scaffolding - all construction materials were hoisted up by steam driven cranes and derricks. In order to sculpt the Statue's skin Eiffel used the repoussé technique developed by Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. This technique was the process of molding light-weight copper sheets by hammering them onto the Statue's hallowed wooden framework. Although Fort Wood remained on Bedloe's Island, it was not an obstacle in the design, construction, or reassembly of the Statue of Liberty. Instead, the star-shaped structure became a part of the Statue's base - the pedestal sits within its walls.

It was inaugurated on Oct. 28, 1886 with a ceremony presided by President Grover Cleveland and accompanied by a water parade of about 300 vessels. Cleveland saluted Bartholdi, the sculptor, as “the greatest man in America today.” The day's wet and foggy weather did not stop some one million New Yorkers from turning out to cheer for The Statue of Liberty. Parades on land and sea honored the Statue while flags and music filled the air and the official dedication took place beneath the colossus "glistening with rain." When it was time for Bartholdi to release the tricolor French flag that veiled Liberty's face, a roar of guns, whistles, and applause sounded.

The Statue of Liberty was designated a National Monument in 1924 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. In 1956, Bedloe’s Island was renamed Liberty Island by a joint resolution in Congress.

The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is the largest archaeological museum in Greece and one of the most important museums in the world devoted to ancient Greek art. It was founded at the end of the 19th century to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece, thus displaying their historical, cultural and artistic value.

The construction of the museum's building began in 1866 and was completed in 1889, with the initial plan conceived by the architect Ludwig Lange. It was later modified by Panages Kalkos who was the main architect, Harmodios Vlachos and Ernst Ziller.

Not easy to photograph my sheep for the moment, because of the heat they only come out early in the morning or late at night. Nevertheless Pâquerette, probably because of her white colour, is more often outdoor than the others. They are particularly pretty for the moment, their wool grew a little since the shearing, it looks like velvet.

The pectoral has a semicircular shape with rounded edges and a vertical collar.' Preserved at both ends of the collar are parts of the hinges for the two elements (one is partially preserved) that served to clasp the pectoral at the back. The iron base is covered with gilded-silver plate with relief decoration, attached to it by means of a silver band run through holes along the periphery. Traces of fabric and leather are preserved on the lower surface of the pectoral. It was probably worn together with a composite corselet.

The decoration is executed in the repoussé technique by means of punches or a matrix. The collar is decorated with a row of lions' heads, with an arc above each and fernlike palmettes in the spaces between the heads; the space beneath the lions' heads is dotted. The crescent-shaped part is decorated with five concentric bands, which are separated by raised borders with a fishbone pattern. The innermost border consists of fernlike palmettes, alternately turned up and down and separated by S-shaped spirals. The second band consists of schematically rendered facing human heads. The central zone is decorated with wavelike rinceaux springing from an acanthus cup with a female head in the middle. From each coil of the rinceaux, spiral-shaped twigs emerge with a four-petal flower, alternating to the left and right. Fernlike palmettes spring from the offshoots of the twigs.

The next band consists of buds alternately turned up and down, and the outermost band is again of human heads. The ends of the pectoral are decorated with a fish-scale pattern with dots in the middle.

The Mezek pectoral is one of thirteen known examples, eight of which were discovered in rich Thracian burials: from Mezek, Varbitsa, Yankovo; the tumuli of Ostrusha, Tsvyatkova, and Golyama Arsenalka, near Kazanlak; Dolno Izorovo; and Dolna Koznitsa. Four others are from Macedonia: examples from Vergina (Tombs II and Ill), Katerini, and Pydna, as well as one without a documented findspot, now in New York. Their chronology likely spans the period 350-275 BCE. The shape of the pectoral is reminiscent of those made of scales sewn on a leather base but represents another stage in the development of this type of armor.

The decoration displays a composite style with elements originating in the toreutic traditions of Greece, Thrace, and the Greek cities in Magna Graecia. Some scholars attribute them to workshops in the Greek colonies on the Thracian coast, while others suggest they are the work of itinerant craftsmen or workshops active in Thracian centers in the 4th century BCE or even of local Thracian craftsmen.

The statue named "Portlandia" sculpted by Raymond Kaskey looks over 5th Avenue in Portland Oregon.

I remember when they put Portlandia on the entrance to the Portland Building in 1985, I was 12.

The statue is based on the design of the city seal. It is the second largest copper repoussé statue in the United States, after the Statue of Liberty. Portlandia is 34 feet 10 inches high.

The yellow box on the left is, I think, what is called repoussé, or “embossed” metal, and it’s got to be brass, judging by the color, or perhaps an alloy with a lot of brass in it. It is very heavy and was made in the 1880s. It comes from my grandmother. The round thing in the center is a unusual lacquered wood and ceramic (the blueish part on top) Chinese box for opium and is supposedly 17th century. I was told once by a curator at the Musée Guimet in Paris that it is museum-caliber.

The other round thing, the one on the right, is extremely heavy (almost 3 kilos) and comes from Nepal. I reckon it is bronze. It is a set of measuring cups that fit into one another for storage like Russian dolls.

In the back, the black and gold thing is a kintsugi piece done by my wife. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of fixing broken items of pottery or china with a lacquer called urushi, mixed with powdered gold. Thus, what was broken is made whole again, and owing to its scars, more valuable than it was before —very symbolically Japanese.

The rusty, larger box is a personal lockbox from the late Middle Ages or early Renaissance. It is made of iron. It is essentially a small safe for jewellery and other precious personal belongings. It opens with a key but the location of the lock is very cleverly concealed. It has lost its front overlapping part, unfortunately, and so isn’t worth much, even though it is a period piece.

And as I felt the need for an item of color to top it off, the little round orange thing is a cardboard box from Hermès, in which they sell the small silk scarves they call “twillies”.

Gold cups with repousse scenes of cupturing bulls. Vapheio, Laconia, Tholos Tomb. 15th c. BC.

These are two masterpieces of Creto-Mycenaean metalwork, found together with other precious objects in the Vapheio tholos tomb. On the first cup (left) a bull is captured by peaceful means: a man ties a rope around the bull's leg, while the animal mates with a cow; three grazing bulls complete the composition. The second cup (right) shows one bull caught in a net while another attacks two hunters as a third hunter flees. Both cups were probably made by the same craftsman, although the first cup is more carefully executed.

"Soul Service Station"

artist: Alison Saar

Desert X 2025

Desert Hot Springs, CA

Drawing inspiration from gas stations that have populated the American West, including the Coachella Valley, Saar’s station offers more than practical services; it provides fuel for the soul. She invites weary travelers to get “their blues flushed, spirits inflated, hearts charged, and souls filled.”

Inside the station, a sculptural assemblage handcrafted by Saar contains a collection of devotional objects. Saar has collaborated with Coachella Valley students to create foil repoussé medallions expressing prayers and wishes for healing and hope. These community-crafted elements, combined with furnishings made from salvaged materials, form a sanctuary that merges collective dreams with Saar’s vision of a spiritual oasis. At the center stands a life-size, hand-carved female figure, the guardian and healer of the site, exuding strength and protection.

Last week in my parent’s garden I was surprised to see this kind of spiral pyramid growing up from the floor... Hey, it was a cut leek whom decided to rebirth!

She kneels down,

and from the quietness

of copper

reaches out.

We take that stillness

into ourselves,

and somewhere

deep in the earth

our breath

becomes her city.

If she could speak

this is what

she would say:

Follow that breath.

Home is the journey we make.

This is how the world

knows where we are.

1881 oil painting by Robert Gibb: The Thin Red Line.

The Thin Red Line is an episode of the Battle of Balaklava on October 25, 1854, during the Crimean War. In this battle, about 500 men of the 93rd Regiment of Foot, aided by a small force of 100 lightly wounded, 40 soldiers, and supported by a substantial force of Turkish infantry, led by Sir Colin Campbell, repelled a Russian cavalry much more numerous.

A Russian cavalry force of 2,500 men, commanded by General Ryzhov, was advancing towards the camp of the British cavalry. Colin Campbell, 1st Baron Clyde, reportedly told his men, "There's no retreat here, lads. You must die on the spot.

Sir Colin's aide-de-camp, John Scott, reportedly replied, "Yes, Sir Colin." If necessary, we will. Campbell placed the 93rd Regiment in a line two ranks deep - the Thin Red Line. By convention, the line had to be four rows deep. However, Campbell felt he did not have enough trained men to form a square, and decided to meet the Russian charge with a double line of fire. As the Russian cavalry approached, the Turks on the flanks broke and fled. The 93rd Regiment fired two ends: at 800 and 500 meters respectively. They didn't have a chance to fire one at close range, as the Russians fell back.

More Victoria Crosses were presented to Highland soldiers on this occasion than on any other. The event was praised by the British press and became an icon of the qualities of the British soldier in a war that was arguably badly managed and increasingly unpopular.

The expression Thin Red Line has become an English expression to designate any small military unit that stands firm in the face of an attack. The phrase has also taken on the metaphorical sense of the barrier that a country's relatively small armed forces present to potential attackers. The phrase Thin Red Line later referred to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and their mission to defend the British Empire and the United Kingdom after the incorporation of the Argylls and Sutherlands into a single regiment now known as the Argyll and Sutherland Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.

With this very last photo of Figaro, I would like to thank you for your kind expressions of sympathy. Figaro was loved by all who knew him, in real life or virtually.

For those who might think, seeing this photo, that he was still doing fine, well in fact, he wasn't sick and was still very well mentally. Unfortunately, his old legs were no longer carrying him at all. I put off the decision as long as I could, but continuing like this would have been cruel. He fell asleep peacefully under my hugs and those of his vet, whom he loved very much.

I will be away from Flickr for a few days, I need some distance.

Tribute #1 to Julian Assange

Tribute #2 to Julian Assange

For those who have just arrived on Planet Earth, let me remind you that what we are experiencing since last Sunday evening is the “Pearl Harbor of Global Democracy” according to Hilary Clinton and the “9/11 of American Diplomacy” according to Barak Obama and his advisors. After 400,000 secret documents on the operating methods of the US army in Iraq, Assange has broken the sound barrier since Sunday with 250,000 diplomatic cables that concern 179 countries! Le Monde, Der Spiegel, El País, the Guardian and the New York Times… according to the latter, more than 1,200 journalists are picking their way through roughly half a billion words of extremely contemporary cables, the most recent of which dates from March 2010. For historians who normally have to wait 50 years before getting access to such material, this is a dream come true. In this case the diplomatic cables are not much older than 7 months. Their scope is colossal. Hence the US State Department’s cry of “murder”…

My dear little wolves and she-wolves, in truth, I tell you, Sunday night tens of thousands of writers put an end to their lives … Imagine you were a Sci-Fi or Anticipation writer, director of Sci-Fi – Fantasy Collection at Pocket, Denoël or Rivages.

According to Laurent COURAU, the mythical founder of the Spirale who is postponing his suicide, “Assange and Wikileaks have definitively relegated fiction to beneath reality and we are seeing a veritable incarnation of the cyber-punk imagination right now in this early 21st century”.

As I see it, Julian Assange is the natural son of Lorenz (Edward Norton), he is quite simply the “Black Swan” of the beginning of this century… he is breaking the seals one by one in the agora of the ethers that is Internet.

Last precaution: Julian Assange has placed a small encrypted file entitled Insurance History on the Swedish Server of Pirate Bay (specialist in the illegal download of music and film music). On Twitter, he recommends that his followers download the file and await his instructions…

Le Monde, Der Spiegel, El PAis, the Guardian et New York Times.

An intensely green patina has developed on this bronze repoussé relief depicting Dionysos and Ariadne, originally attached below the handle of an hydria (water jar), fragments of which were found with the relief.

Dionysos, on the left, is holding a cornucopia in his right hand, and leaning on something (an altar?) with his left hand. He is naked, save a himation, which has fallen from his hips, exposing his nudity. He is staring at Ariadne, on the right, who is holding her veil open and looking back towards her husband.

The Buddha Park of Ravangla, also known as Tathagata Tsal, is situated near Ravangla in South Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim. It was constructed between 2006 and 2013, and features a 130-foot-high (40 m) statue of the Buddha, erected to mark the 2550th anniversary of the birth of Gautama Buddha, as its main attraction. The statue, built of 60 tonnes of copper, is an example of repousse work. Mount Narsing forms the backdrop to the statue. The site was chosen within the larger religious complex of Rabong Monastery, itself a centuries-old place of pilgrimage. Also nearby is Ralang Monastery, a key monastery in Tibetan Buddhism. Built and installed through the joint efforts of the government and people of Sikkim, the statue was consecrated on 25 March 2013 by the 14th Dalai Lama. The Buddhist circuit of the park was built under a state government project, intended to boost pilgrimage and tourism to the region. The Cho Djo lake is located within the complex, surrounded by forest. The park has a tranquil setting with spacious pathways, and there is a Buddhist conclave, a meditation centre and a museum with a spiral gallery. (Wikipedia)

We probably spent an hour visiting this beautiful temple and park during our visit to Sikkim. The inside of the temple is covered in beautiful, colourful paintings telling the story of Buddha. Unfortunately, no photos allowed inside.
