The September 25, 1983 Alamogordo Daily News reported that the little dump had been selected because scavenging was forbidden there and because the dump’s garbage was crushed and covered every night. Nevertheless, one entire truckload of games was hijacked and allegedly driven down to Mexico to be copied, Alamogordo teenagers snuck into the landfill to dig out free games, and area stores were suddenly besieged by people trying to sell them Atari’s shoddiest products. To stop the site from being looted further, many of the games were crushed by D9 Caterpillars, and a layer of concrete was poured over what was left.
Please watch the release and discussion of a new CSIS Europe Program report, The New Ice Curtain: Russia’s Strategic Reach to the Arctic, which examines Russia’s economic, energy, and security strategies and aspirations in the Arctic, and the evolution of the Kremlin’s Arctic policies over the past decade. On the eve of President Obama’s and Secretary of State John Kerry’s visit to Anchorage, Alaska where they will convene Arctic and non-Arctic leaders to discuss climate impact and resilience, and global leadership in the Arctic, it is a timely moment to better understand the largest and most dynamic Arctic actor and to assess whether the Arctic will remain a cooperative region or succumb to geopolitical tensions.
Report author Heather A. Conley and project consultant Dr. Marlène Laruelle will examine the significant changes in Russia’s Arctic policies and rhetoric – particularly since President Putin’s return to the Kremlin in 2012 – and offer their insights on Russia’s military posturing in the region, as well as how to develop new collaborative thinking to preserve and protect international Arctic cooperation. New York Times correspondent Steven Lee Myers, who has written about and traveled frequently to the Russian Arctic, will offer his reflections on the report and assess whether the development of a 21st century “ice curtain” is realistic. The panelists will also preview the upcoming August 31st meeting in Alaska and assess the impact of the potential attendance of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on U.S.-Russian cooperation in the Arctic.

Roughdown Common and Gadesprings Field Trip report - 30/04/14
I was joined by Roger and Lucy last night at Roughdown Common, for our first trip to this fantastic mixture of open chalk grassland with intersecting woodland.
This is the earliest in the year that we have trapped this site, and we waited with baited breath to see what might turn up to the lights.
Conditions were quite good with a faint breeze and a temperature of around 15c at dusk, dropping to 10c when driving home.
We set 1 light up overlooking the lower grass field, the second one along the edge of the woodland and the third (MV) within the wood itself and under a large Oak.
Interestingly my Mercury blended bulb did quite well on the edge of the field and attracted a good variety of species, equal to that of the Mercury vapour (this isn't always the case!)
It was slow going at first, with a few Waved Umber's and Green Carpet's first to the trap, then the variety performance turned up and we started to accumulate a nice list.
Lights were on at 8.45pm and by 11.15pm we were ready to pack up as there was a distinct chill in the air and the sky had cleared.
In 2 and a half hours of trapping with 3 lights we had amassed 70 moths roughly of 38 species, a very pleasing result.
Moth species were also very specific to which light they went to. Only Small Phoenix, Powdered Quaker and Sallow Kitten went to the Actinic.
Most of the Brimstones favoured the 160w Blended bulb.
To the MV we had Knot Grass.
Common Marbled Carpet was my earliest ever, and I didn't expect a Twin-spotted Quaker either having last seen them a few weeks back now thinking that they had finished.
All in all a very pleasing catch and nice to add some Spring species to the site list.
On our way back from Roughdown Common, we checked to see how the trap had fared at Gadesprings...we couldn't believe it. Although there was only 14 moths present, 7 species were recorded here that did not feature in the catch at Roughdown Common!
I look forward to coming over again soon.
Thanks to Roger and Lucy for helping me set up, and for Roger being with me as always until the bitter end!

Improving climate change reporting in the Mediterranean: Science – Media interface
Round Table: The socio-economic and political dimension of climate change in the Mediterranean
11 November 2016
Marrakech, Morocco
Since climate change is a cross boundary issue and involves several fields of action (water, energy, wildlife, biodiversity, climate refugees, social conflicts, biodiversity), the networking developed in the last decades could be seen as a fruitful opportunity to build mitigation and adaptation capacity in the Mediterranean. Understanding the need and urgency to adapt and mitigate this impact is the only way forward to put into practice solutions for the benefit of people and nature.
Roberto ROSON, Professor at Economy Department, Ca' Foscari University, Venice - Economic Impacts of Climate Change in the Mediterranean.
Dr. Maria SNOUSSI - Professor at Mohammed V University, Rabat-Morocco and Head of the ‘Coastal Environment & Climate Change’ Research Group at the Faculty of Sciences – Climate change on coastal areas.
Olgu OKUMUŞ - Project Manager, UfM Energy Division, Union for the Mediterranean - UfM Climate Change Expert Group.
Leila RADHOUANE, National Tunisian Institute for Agriculture Research – Climate change impacts on agriculture in North African countries.

More than 2 years of shooting pretty much exclusively analog later, I turn back to digitalism with the purchase of a new camera. The many rolls of films have forced me to be creative and taught me a thing or two about photography.
There was the lesson of thinking before I shoot; that chimping is for the faint-hearted; that sights are best enjoyed with my own eyes rather than through a viewfinder; and that ultimately, photography to me is about getting out and having fun.

Shortly after William Barr sends his summary of the Mueller report to Congress, reporters start broadcasting outside the DOJ.
Please add the ability to select this darkened item to allow me to remove my photo from the group it's in.
It's very easy to accidentally fat finger a group just by scrolling through the list.
Right now, the only way I can fix the problem is to fire up my computer, which sort of negates the portability of a mobile app.
I've tagged this with 'flickr feedback' and 'bug report', which I will do with other bugs in the future so they can be found when you guys are looking for something that needs fixing.
Although, I would recommend starting with the feedback feature. Your users can save you a lot of bug bashing time.

Walton Colliery (formerly known as Sharlston West) is a safety lamp mine situated near Wakefield in the West Riding of Yorkshire; its general layout, so far as it is relevant, is shown on Plan No. 1. The colliery employed 1,285 men underground and 298 on the surface, a daily output of 2,200 tons being obtained from the Top Haigh Moor, the Low Haigh Moor, the Kent Thick and the Birkwood or Lidgett Seams. About half of this output was from the Top Haigh Moor.

"Pedro bonito tá na barriga da mamãe, chutando na barriga da mamãe.
Pedro já saiu da barriga da mamãe.
O cabelo dele é arrepiado, mas tá melhor.
Pedro bebê.

Pedro tá no peito da mamãe.

…as in "none". Well, my arms are more tanned, my face too, my neck is red, and my feet, which you can't see, are pink and probably going to cause me pain *sigh*
From the Maine Adjutant General's Report for the year ending 1861:
"On the thirteenth of April, the commander-in-chief, in view of the defenceless condition of the navy-yard at Kittery, and the large amount of national property there, designated Captain M.F. Wentworth's company of artillery at that place, to garrison Fort McClary [Kittery], situated in immediate proximity to the yard, and afford it the desired protection."
Wentworth's Company, taking up their position one day after Fort Sumter was bombarded, was formally known as Co A, 2nd Regiment, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, M.V.M. The men of this Maine Militia served until 8 July 1861 when they were mustered out. Lt. Ira Andrews' Coast Guard Artillery Company took up their position at Fort McClary on 9 July, 1861.
Three York men were members of Wentworth's Company: John W Dudley, Charles D Preble and John M Lowe. Horace Lunt, who was born in York, served from the town of Kittery.
Since I knew I was going to be taking pictures of Soviet things like this MiG-21, I took along my Soviet lens, the tiny no-frills-at-all KMZ Industar 50-2 f/3.5 "Russian Pancake". The effective focal length of 75mm is not convenient for this sort of thing - I had to "zoom with my feet" as far back as possible and wait for gaps in the crowd. Considering the lens isn't multicoated (or any-coated?), there's less flare than I expected, what with that one light pointing directly at me.
