Afectuosamente dedicada a Oscar Hevia, que tiene la fortuna de vivir en ese hermoso rincón del mundo. // Warmly devoted to Oscar Hevia, who has the fortune of living in that wonderful corner in the World.

The light spawns its silver light over the sea.

Pacified, the waves magnify the silence

of the feeble steps of the day

venturing into their habit

of increasing noises.

The skin gets over and is assuming

the splendor of the sun which already lavishes

its luxury of colors and reliefs,

the blue sea, the greedy mirror

in which the sunny sky watches itself

and in its swinging the sound of the waves

suggests a long trip to memory.

Each day renews its memory, old days

in the time unit which is the life.

I have not much to report about this frog other than it eats dragonflies and damselflies... I will say the more I visit the Azraq Wetland Reserve, the more I like it there... there are water buffalo, Arabian wolves, and all manner of other reptiles, amphibians and insects here...

The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) staff are also great and very welcoming and helpful...

When I saw the report that the Leucistic Bald Eagle made an appearance in the morning I knew I had to take my chances at this super rare raptor. I left at 4a.m. and drove two hours South. I had to wait for the sun to rise, but found him immediately crunching bones from a fish he was holding down on the mudflats. Shortly after he perched just above us next to the walking trail. Still no light but extremely close. He was very calm as he did not flinch when a jogger came by. He flew to this Eucalyptus several times and perched calmly for several minutes. The light was starting to filter through the leaves in the background as this majestic beauty posed for us. It was a very awe inspiring experience I will never forget. We had a solid two hours to photograph him that morning. He eventually flew off into the distance and we were admiring and reflecting on this one of a kind beauty.

shot these without realizing they're my new nemesis and my old best friend. love grapes, especially as wine and homemade grape jelly, but they're toxic to dogs (sorry, more dog stuff). those the birds haven't eaten are now all over the ground. hound boy doesn't miss a thing.

For the non-Australian's the Royal Commission investigating the Federal Robodebt Scheme handed down it's final, damning report. The report covers the politicians, public servants and architects of the automated debt collection scheme that was fundamentally illegal and mathematically flawed. It targeted approx 500,000 of the nations poorest people. Finally there is hope of justice with a sealed section being sent to the newly commissioned National Anti-Corruption Commission. If you want to read how ideology got in the way of good public policy see here: robodebt.royalcommission.gov.au/system/files/2023-07/repo.... Here's hoping politicians on all sides take heed. As to truth in politics, I'm still being disappointed by much of the debates on a whole range of important topics.

Report from a photo trip to Lofoten - 34

Spectacular multi-colored aurora seen from the beach of Uttakleiv, Lofoten, Norway.

I am often asked if this image of the aurora is what it actually looks like. The answer is no. But the reason is not that the image is manipulated in any way. The reason lies in the lack of color sensitivity of the receptors (cone cells) in the human retina. This is why we perceive the colors less well at night, our vision concentrates on the brightness contrasts. The optical impression of the northern lights is therefore dominated by the relatively bright green stripes, the red areas are hardly noticed and at least don't appear as strong as in this picture. However, with the long-term exposure, the camera sensor is very well able to record the actually existing color tones. As a side note, you can also see far fewer stars with the naked eye than in this shot.

The image was captured with the Nikon Z 9 in camera-raw format (".nef") and therefore needed post-processing (this is done in-camera when shooting in jpeg format). I basically applied my standard post-processing in Lightroom that I would also apply to "normal" daylight photos. Apart from that, color temperature was set to be a little cooler than recorded by the camera. Furthermore, I corrected the exposure up by about two stops to reveal the details of the cliffs. (I had chosen relatively short exposure times for night shots so that the northern lights do not show any motion blur and the stars remain points. In my experience, the exposure correction in post-processing essentially has the same effect on image noise as increasing the ISO value when taking the picture.)

Compositionally Challenged Week 29 - Pick a Challenge - Week 5/2022 Weather Report

Yesterday we were awakened at 5am with a very loud and bright lightning/rain storm. The storms rolled in and out all day, a welcome relief from the summer heat. : )

Winter close to Bromma Airport on January 11, 2021.

"A picture says more than a thousand words" and you can all see how shitty the winter weather was mid-afternoon yesterday...

If I were forced by some imaginary omnipotence to pick just one location in which to spend the rest of my days pointing my camera towards the sea, I don't think I'd look beyond Porth Nanven. It's never been lost on me that growing up in Cornwall has spoiled me with a glut of local hotspots, several of which I happily return to time and time again. Some photographers choose not to return to places after a visit or two, while others are content to retread their steps over and over, learning a location under all of its aspects. There's room for all of us of course. Yesterday unexpectedly, there was room for Katie, a friend I haven't seen for a while who is a wild swimmer and takes some spectacular underwater photographs. She's as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside and greeted me with the worst display of social distancing since it was invented by bounding towards me and wrapping me an enormous hug. I've missed hugs. It was a delight to see her. She's one of those people who make the world feel like a good place to be in. She'd been swimming of course, and was making ready to leave. time was moving on and she's an early riser who confesses to being no use whatsoever after 9pm. Sunset was due after 9:30.

In one of the more distant counties of our nation, this corner of delights is particularly remote even for those of us who live here, and the approach to it from the lonely windswept outpost of St Just is a descent into what feels like a primordial other world. It starts with a twisting drive on a narrow road flanked by high Cornish hedgerows adorned with foxgloves and campion, before a sharp descent takes you past the last few houses, one garden boasting enormous Canarian echiums covered in tiny spikes bearing thousands of purple blooms. A little further down on the final bend, a massive gunnera, leaves at least a metre wide spreads towards the road. The final drag down to the small car park is festooned with ferns and bracken. Finally you arrive on a beach consisting almost entirely of huge egg shaped chunks of granite, worn smooth by year upon year of Atlantic attrition. Hence the nickname, "Dinosaur Egg Beach." And then you look out to the ocean to witness the view, in this case with an ominous bank of threatening cloud that had the audacity to interrupt my sandwich and found me racing to set up the camera more quickly than I usually would. I'm pleased to report that I stayed dry, and it seemed from the wet roads that the cloud had instead dumped its contents 30 miles to the east over Redruth as I arrived at home later on after one of the most enjoyable evenings with the camera for quite some time.

There were reports of a Great Gray Owl up north that I had to check out. Last year there was also one just a tad more North which was the first in over twenty years. To have two years in a row of Great Gray Owls in Northern California was just baffling news and a very rare!

I drove four hours North with a friend and we were very welcomed by a very kind and hospitable owner. She allowed a small group of us onto her property and we had the pleasure of photographing this majestic owl.

The first day the owl stayed fairly high and he sat stagnant at a few spots for long periods of time. He studied different holes on the ground and we all tried to guess where he might fly down to. I gambled and cheated left and knelt down based on what my intuition was resonating. I chose correctly as I was knelt down and tracked him on his way towards me. He was probably 10-15 feet away from me as he ripped his prey from the hole and carried it away into a Redwood tree where he took the time to eat it. This prey was large he couldn't just gulp it so he had to downsize it by picking it to pieces before he swallowed it.

We had a very action filled second day and came away with great memories and company.

We were the last group of people she allowed onto her property as she expressed to us that she didn't want to handle anymore large groups. We were grateful for her hospitality and the opportunity she allowed us to have.

The secret is out, and the Canadian internet groups imploded after the release of five SD70ACU's painted to honor the Canadian and United States Armed Forces. Thanks to the team at CP for making this possible, as well as putting on a great ceremony at the Calgary headquarters on Remembrance Day 2019. The 5 meter barrier around the units was a nice touch, as every fan managed to get lots of sunny shots without having to use a people filter.

It's going to be interesting to shoot these units on the road, with the variations in dark and light paint each one will present challenges to the photographer, but its bette rthen dirty red!

It was reported that there were many young Green Herons that had fledged at Salmon Creek in Bodega Bay. It took me a lot of searching before I spotted one up in the cedar trees 'preening' then soon found others nearby.

I never did see the adults that I'm sure were still feeding them.

Report from a photo trip to Lofoten -- 22

The eagle tour started at 9 a.m. in glorious weather from Svolvær (Lofoten) and went to the nearby fjords and islands (Trollfjord, specifically: Øyhellsundet), home to a larger population of white-tailed eagles. The eagles, which were still hungry in the morning, were readily persuaded by bait fishes to allow themselves to be observed at close range while catching their prey. Here is a picture of the approach to the prey.

I used the Nikon Z 9 with the 300mm f/4 and a teleconverter 1.4x. This combination is quite lightweight, which is an advantage when standing in the speedboat trying to keep the eagles in the viewfinder. It was a challenge for the autofocus because the light was still rather weak early in the morning (just before sunrise). Denoising was done with DXO-PhotoLab 6.

I've been eagerly waiting for the result too. At least I got the exposure correct haha

This is a 4 min exposure and with iso25 I can really take my time.

The original scan had a weird magenta cast to it. I desaturated magenta and a bit of yellow at the post processing stage and have only done some level adjustment... some burning as well. Everything else remained
