KABUL, 25 April 2017 - Afghanistan authorities have made headway in their fight against corruption
while enormous challenges remain, finds a new United Nations report released today.
“For the sake of the country’s future, corruption in Afghanistan must be addressed and eliminated,” said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan.
“The United Nations welcomes the progress already made, and fully supports the government’s ongoing efforts to fight corruption in the interest of ending impunity, ensuring accountability and transparency, and restoring integrity to the management of public services, finances and natural resources.”
In the report, titled ‘Afghanistan’s Fight Against Corruption: The Other Battlefield,’ the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) highlights the progress the country has made in addressing corruption and draws on internationally recognized best practices to provide recommendations for how the government, with the continued support of the public and the international community, can build on those achievements.
“It is my sincere hope that the progress made so far in the fight against corruption and the recommendations contained in our report will serve as a platform to achieve greater policy coherence and coordination in Afghanistan,” said the UN envoy, who is also head of UNAMA.
The report, which was circulated to Afghan ministries and the judiciary for input and endorsement prior to release, points out that corruption has affected all aspects of life in Afghanistan, undermining public trust and confidence in government institutions, and hindering efforts to bring lasting peace and prosperity to the country.
A key component of Afghanistan’s fight against corruption is the dedicated Anti-Corruption Justice Centre (ACJC), with dedicated police and prosecution units, and a new national primary and appeals court, established by Presidential Decree to operate with jurisdiction over the broad range of corruption offences specified in the current penal code, as well as money laundering offences, destruction or selling of cultural and historical relics, crimes against internal and external security, illegal extraction of mines, and land usurpation.
In addition to outlining the advances made by the ACJC, which is actively investigating, prosecuting and adjudicating cases, the report indicates that Afghanistan is showing progress in restoring institutional control over the delivery of essential public services and management of public finances.
The report makes several recommendations, recognizing that the government’s ongoing anti- corruption efforts have yet to impact the lives of most Afghans, and concludes that, notwithstanding the many legal and policy reforms that have been undertaken, corruption remains a substantial obstacle to Afghanistan’s long-term peace and prosperity.
“The report serves as a stark reminder that the fight against corruption cannot be won in the short term, and that the battle requires the sustained commitment on the part of the government and the general public, and full support from the international community,” said Yamamoto.

While the RCR team were at the TCL Chinese Theatre they got to see first hand, the unveiling of the Anne Hathaway wax figure which was the second of twelve figures that the world famous Madame Tussauds Hollywood plans to unveil this year. You’ll be surprised to learn it too took 20 artists three months to create and only cost $300,000. Look closely at the figure - it captures Anne’s smile… or so we’re told. Tell us what you think.

While I appreciate it, I don't do much street photography. Don't have the patience for it. But there's one type of street photography that doesn't require much patience - protest photography. And there was a big protest against the education cuts proposed by the Browne Report in Oxford today. I got in spitting distance and shot wide. I wasn't actually spat at :P

Astronomers reported in 1992 that they found intriguing evidence that a black hole weighing over 2.6 billion times the mass of the Sun exists at the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87, based upon images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The images show that stars become strongly concentrated towards the center of M87, as if drawn into the center and held there by the gravitational field of a massive black hole.
M87 is at the center of a nearby cluster of galaxies in the constellation of Virgo, 52 million light- years distant, and contains more than 100 billion stars. One of the brightest galaxies in the local universe, M87 is visible in even small telescopes.
The images show clearly that the stars in M87 become densely concentrated towards the center, forming a bright "cusp" of light at the heart of the galaxy.
The central density of stars in M87 is at least 300 times greater than expected for a normal giant elliptical galaxy, and over a thousand times denser than the distribution of stars in the neighborhood of our own Sun. In fact, the ultimate central density of stars in M87 may be even higher, but its measurement is beyond the resolving power of even HST.

Report on Jaipur Trip
Jaipur, Rajasthan’s capital, is an enthralling historical city and the gateway to India’s most flamboyant State. The Modern School, Faridabad organised one night-two days trip to Jaipur for an educational and fun filled outing for children of Grades P4 – S2 on 21st and 22nd March 2017. After the final exams for the session 2016-2017, 34 Modernites and 5 teachers left the school at the break of the dawn on March 21th, 2017 for Jaipur. We travelled by bus during this trip. The retreat and beautiful ambience rekindled student’s interest and curiosity to a different level. After enjoying a lavish lunch at the hotel, the students visited Sanganer. The visit to handmade paper factory, blue pottery factory and block printing unit was a great learning experience for all. They also spent time at the factory outlet to buy small gifts for their family members. In the evening students visited Chokhi Dhani to enjoy Rajasthani folk music, dance and traditional Rajasthani food. Next day, the students were taken for sightseeing to ‘Amber Fort’ in Jaipur, where they saw various tunnels built for the protection. They also saw the glass room and various artifacts. After that, we also visited the City Palace and were amazed to see the wide variety of weapons, the royal dresses, vehicles used by the royal family and the grandeur of the palace. The tour concluded as the group reassembled at the hotel for lunch after which they departed for school where the parents were eagerly waiting to receive them. The warm family hugs, smiles on the faces of children, teachers and parents filled the air with joy and positivity. An experience with friends became a cherished journey and made the school days truly memorable.

03/28/2014 - 03/30/2014 She is an awake-walking daydreamer, a blurry contrast of multiple styles, an illusionist of the vivid pastel sound, a contemporary traditionalist, and a reflection of the modern crossover cultures. Grooving and atmospheric electronica where east meets west in a quirky way: it´s SIENNÁ.
Currently living in Norway but raised in Japan, SIENNÁ’s 'no rules' approach to creating intelligent groovy music is a beautiful reflection of the crossover cultures we see in the modern world.
Just as Björk, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Ryuichi Sakamoto - these out there visionaries create ambient and warm sonic contrasts, mixing Electronica, House, Jazz and Trad Japanese to become truely unique. It´s the definition of groove-phenomena, audio-sex to the weird and wonderful.
The avantgarde-trio consists of SIENNÀ on keyboards, vocals, DJ and programming. Hallvard Gaardløs on bass and guitarist Fredrik Karwowski.

OPA's Health Care Quality Report Card also rates more than 200 medical groups throughout California based on the quality of their patient care and service. To see how your doctor's medical group rates, visit www.opa.ca.gov.
The Transition Report 2016-17 casts a spotlight on inequality and inclusion, explaining how a failure to deliver a fair distribution of the fruits of progress may lead to setbacks in political and economic development. It also explores the causes of inequality of opportunity and looks at how to strengthen financial inclusion.
Tracking the successes that have been achieved in post-communist societies, the report concludes that the “happiness gap” has finally closed with people on similar incomes in non-transition countries, but warns that not everyone has shared in this economic prosperity.
This latest annual analysis draws on a wide-ranging survey of people who have experienced transition first-hand.

About “THE INEVITABLE DEFEAT OF MISTER & PETE”
The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete is a beautifully observed and tremendously moving film about salvation through friendship and the way transformation sometimes can happen just by holding on long enough. During a sweltering summer in New York City, 13-year-old Mister’s (Skylan Brooks) hard-living mother (Jennifer Hudson) is apprehended by the police, leaving the boy and nine-year-old Pete (Ethan Dizon) alone to forage for food while dodging child protective services and the destructive scenarios of the Brooklyn projects. Faced with more than any child can be expected to bear, the resourceful Mister nevertheless feels he is an unstoppable force against seemingly unmovable obstacles. But what really keeps the pair in the survival game is much more Mister’s vulnerability than his larger-than-life attitude. Visit www.MisterandPeteMovie.com for film information & updates.
