This guy was on campus the other day shouting at people trying to scare them into repentance. I'm no doctor, but that doesn't seem like the most effective way to share teachings of a loving God.

Revelation 6:15-17 (ANIV)

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and every free man hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains. 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand?"

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Not specified in the account.

LIGHTING NOTES:

The main source of yellow light comes from torches in the two caves behind the figures.

A subtle, secondary source of light is unseen in the foreground, which is bathing the figures in a pale blue glow. I selected that colour as it provides a contrast to the warm yellow glow of the torch light coming from the caves.

Note: in the previous scene (Revelation 6:12-14, the normal sources of light in our world (the sun, moon and stars) have been darkened/removed, so obviously they can’t be sources of natural light in this, later scene.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

A variety of people: a king, generals, a rich man, various women - see below for comments.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

Although verse 16 gives the impression that the people were fearful of God (”hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne...”) I decided to illustrate them in this scene with rebellious, angry, resentful expressions, since all that has come before (the plagues and judgements of God against the people of earth) has not produced an attitude of remorse and repentance in the people of the world.

I wanted to illustrate all the people types mentioned in verse 15. The list in this verse seems to run from the most powerful and influential (kings, princes, generals) to the weakest and/or least influential (slave and free men). I expect that is deliberate, since that single sentence includes all the types of people we can imagine. I wanted to represent all nations and people types in this picture, so have men, women, young and older people, people of differing nationalities, etc.

The king can be seen on the right of the scene, wearing opulent red robes, a crown, gold and jewels. He is raising and shaking his fist against God in my scene: rebellious to the end.

The “generals” from verse 15 are represented by several characters in my picture. The man on the left was inspired from a photograph I found on the internet of a Sikh general from the Second World War (I think). Behind him is a Royal Air Force (RAF) Air Marshall.

On the right of this scene, by the king, is a far eastern general. I found a photograph on the internet that was helpful in designing this character. You might think I have exaggerated all those medals across his tunic, and even running down his trouser leg, but I can assure you that this is taken straight from a photograph of actual “generals”! I must admit I laughed when I saw all those medals - and so had to include that in my scene.

The “rich” from verse 15 are represented by the man on the right of the scene, with a cigar in his mouth, expensive blue suit (complete with diamonds as buttons!) and a handful of US Dollar notes in his hand. No doubt he mistakenly believes that his wealth will save him on God’s Judgement Day.

I have drawn several women in this scene. The first to note is the rather sour looking woman in the left foreground. She might be an actress or member of some royal family, or else some “famous” person. She is bedecked with a crown, huge jewellery and is drinking the finest champagne.

Another woman to note is the one on the right, behind the king. We can’t see much of her, but she is based on a young 1920's socialite, complete with pearls in her hair and a bright blue feather gown.

I represented younger females in my scene in the figure of the women in leather trousers, a pink top, long hair and arm raised in an angry expression of defiance towards the heavens.

Reflecting on what many, many people consider important in life: medals, honours, fame, beauty, money, etc, I am amazed that so many people in the world chase after these things; devoting their lives in pursuit of these things, which will do them good at all on Judgement Day. The Bible is very clear that pursuing such temporary things will do no-one any good, since admission to, or exclusion from the presence of God is not achieved by fame, wealth, beauty, or anything else. Our eternal lives can only be secured by repenting of our wrong doing (sins) and accepting Jesus the Christ as our Saviour and Lord.

I like the commentary below, and can not improve upon the sentiment included, so I’ll quote it here...

(”15-17) And the kings . . .—Translate, And the kings of the earth, and the magnates, and the commanders of hosts, and the wealthy, and the strong, and every man, bond and free, hid themselves (going) into the caves and into the rocks of the mountains; and say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth upon the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: for the day, the great (day) of His wrath came (or, is come); and who is able to stand? In the list of the great ones here we may notice the descending order—kings, magnates or statesmen, generals, rich men, strong men, bond and free men. The terror strikes into every class: monarchs and their advisers, the statesmen and diplomatists, the commanders of troops, the merchant princes, the men of ability, as well as the obscurer orders of society. Neither royalty, nor rank, nor force of arms, nor opulence, nor talent, nor strength, either of intellect or frame, avail in that crisis; neither does insignificance escape in that day when God brings to light the hidden things. The tests of God are spiritual, as the weapons of God’s war are not carnal. Men who have relied upon wealth, rank, or power, have prepared themselves against one form of trial, but find themselves unarmed in the day of spiritual testing. Like Macbeth, they are unable to fight with the unexpected shape which haunts them. They would rather meet the bodily foe, “who would dare them to the desert with a sword.”

Thus in the final day of judgment the revealing of the spiritual order of all life will confound men whose minds have been blinded by their entire absorption in world-splendours and world-powers. Nor is it merely the unveiling of the forgotten spiritual order which will confound them. The advent is of a Person. It is more than the manifestation of the kingdom of Him who all this while had been King on His throne, and whom they had forgotten—it is the revealing of God’s Son from heaven. It is not without significance that He is described as the Lamb. In that day of His wrath, it is not as a Judge who has laid aside the tokens of His humiliation and suffering: it is as the Lamb. He whom they now shrink from is He who came meek as a lamb, gentle, pure, and suffering on their behalf. He whom they now behold with dismay is He whom they treated with neglect, and whose love they spurned.”

A friend gave Rev. John Murray, S.J., this Black Madonna from Manresa, Spain, where St. Ignatius of Loyola spent time in repentance and prayer.

'You are the servant, He is the Master. Prayers come from you, answers come from Him. Abstinence comes from you, protection comes from Him. Repentance comes from you, acceptance comes from Him. Go towards Him walking, He will come to you running.'

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 King James Version

Are you ready to stand before God if you died today?

The Bible declares that one day you will die and then stand face to face with God to be judged. Hebrews 9:27 reads, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Nothing in your entire life could be more important than being ready for that day, because it will determine whether you will spend eternity in heaven or in hell.

This judgment will be based on a person’s righteousness, which means to be absolutely perfect and without sin. The Bible says in Acts 17:31, “He hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained…” The man spoken of in this verse is Jesus Christ. This means that your righteousness must match that of Jesus Christ. Can you make it through your entire life without committing one single sin? Jesus Christ did, and He is the one that you will be compared with at your judgment.

On the cross, Jesus took your sin upon Himself. He died a death that you deserve to die and paid the debt that you owe to God. He paid it in full. But you must place your faith and trust in Him if you want to take advantage of that great gift and be free from sin and the punishment of sin forever. Here is how you can do that today.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Jesus Christ: fully-God and fully-man, without sin, died on the cross a death that he did not deserve in your place. Three days later he rose from the dead defeating sin, death, and the devil forever.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

God requires you to repent of your sin (a change of mind toward God, sin, and self) and put your faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Realize your good deeds will not save you.. that is what religion teaches; the outward appearance. God looks on the heart.

..for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7

You cannot bribe a Holy God with good works or sacraments.

Jesus Christ is the only way to the Father. John 14:6

Ye must be born again. John 3:7

Jesus paid the price for your sins, will you accept or reject Him?

Kasteel Huis Bergh is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands and is located in the town of 's-Heerenberg in the province of Gelderland. The castle dates back to the 13th century and was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Bergh, who ruled a large area in the eastern part of the Netherlands. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has a rich art collection including early Italian paintings, medieval manuscripts and coins. The castle is now a museum and wedding venue, where visitors can enjoy the historic atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.

Ash Wednesday gets its name from the practice of placing ashes on the foreheads of the faithful as a sign of repentance. The ashes used are gathered after the Palm Crosses from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. In the liturgical practice of some churches, the ashes are mixed with the Oil of the Catechumen

hough some churches use ordinary oil. This paste is used by the priest who presides at the service to make the sign of the cross, first upon his own forehead and then on each of those present who kneel before him at the altar rail. As he does so, he recites the words: "Remember (O man) that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

I met Auggie on MySpace before I began attending Columbia College Chicago in Fall 2007. He was going to go there too, for film. We met at the Columbia convocation (sort of like some weird carnival event for freshmen), and he gave me a card to his church, Metro Praise.

"No thanks," I said. "When I'm finally allowed to go to church, I want to go to the one my friend Vanessa goes to."

I had no idea that both Vanessa and I would end up there, and that Auggie would become one of my closest friends.

Over the last year, I have had a blast with this guy. He is absolutely hilarious and I have had more awkward moments with him than anyone in my life. People are totally convinced we'll end up together, but in all honesty... we'd both probably rather eat dirt.

What if Jesus returned tonight? Are you ready to stand before the Lord? Are your sins forgiven? Have you repented and put your faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation?

Your good works will not save you...going to church will not save you...being nice and polite will not save you...Your good deeds will not outweigh your bad deeds. You will not sneak into Heaven's back door somehow because of the virtuous life you think you lived.

1 Timothy 2:5 says:

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus:

Only faith in Jesus Christ will save you from Hell.

Realize you are a sinner and deserve nothing but eternity

Repent (turn from sin to God) and by faith alone, receive Jesus Christ as your savior.

John Wesley's Journal:

May 1742: ‘We came to Newcastle about six, and, after a short refreshment, walked into the town. I was surprised: so much drunkenness, cursing, and swearing (even from the mouths of little children) do I never remember to have seen and heard before, in so small a compass of time. Surely this place is ripe for Him who “came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” ...

[Sunday] ‘At seven I walked down to Sandgate, the poorest and most contemptible part of the town, and, standing at the end of the street with John Taylor, began to sing the hundredth Psalm. Three or four people came out to see what was the matter, who soon increased to four or five hundred. I suppose there might be twelve to fifteen hundred before I had done preaching; to whom I applied those solemn words: “He was wounded for our transgressions...’

‘Observing the people, when I had done, to stand gaping and staring upon me with the most profound astonishment, I told them, “If you desire to know who I am, my name is John Wesley. At five in the evening, with God’s help, I design to preach here again.”

‘At five the hill on which I designed to preach was covered from the top to the bottom. I never saw so large a number of people together, either in Moorfields or at Kennington Common... After preaching the poor people were ready to tread me under-foot, out of pure love and kindness. It was some time before I could possibly get out of the press. I then went back another way than I came; but several were got to our inn before me, by whom I was vehemently importuned to stay with them, at least, a few days; or, however, one day more...

‘Some of these told me they were members of a religious society which had subsisted for many years, and had always gone on in a prudent, regular manner, and been well spoken of by all men... And yet how many of the publicans and harlots will go into the kingdom of heaven before these!’

November 1742: ‘My brother had been here for some weeks before, and was just returned to London. At eight I met the wild,, staring, loving society; but not them alone, as I had designed. For we could not persuade the strangers to leave us. So that we only spent about an hour in prayer...

[Next day, Sunday] ‘At four I preached in the Square of the Keelmen’s Hospital, on “By grace are ye saved through faith.” It rained and hailed hard, both before and after, but there were only some scattered drops while I preached, which frighted away a few careless hearers. I met the society at six, and exhorted all who had “Set their hand to the plough” not to “look back”.

[Monday] ‘In the afternoon (and every afternoon this week) I spoke severally with the members of the society...

‘I could not but observe the different manner wherein God is pleased to work in different places. The grace of God flows here with a wider stream than it did at first either at Bristol or Kingswood. But it does not sink so deep as it did there. Few are thoroughly convinced of sin, and scarce any can witness that the Lamb of God has taken away their sins.’

February 1743: ‘In the following week I diligently inquired who they were that did not walk according to the gospel; in consequence of which I was obliged to put away about fifty persons. There remained about eight hundred in the society.’

March 1743: ‘I read over to the society the rules which all our members are to observe; and desired every one seriously to consider whether he was willing to conform thereto or no. That this would shake many of them I knew well; and therefore on Monday the 7th, I began visiting the classes again, lest “that which is lame should be turned out of the way.”...

‘The number of those who were expelled the society was sixty-four: Two for cursing and swearing. Two for habitual Sabbath-breaking. Seventeen for drunkenness. Two for retailing spirituous liquors. Three for quarrelling and brawling. One for beating his wife. Three for habitual, wilful lying. Four for railing and evil-speaking. One for idleness and laziness. And Nine-and-twenty for lightness and carelessness.’

June 1743: ‘I ... inquired into the state of those whom I left here striving for the master; and some of them, I found, were grown faint in their minds: others had turned back “as a dog to the vomit”; but about six hundred still continued striving together for the hope of the gospel.’

November 1743: ‘In the following week I endeavoured to speak severally to each member of the society. The numbers I found neither to rise nor fall; but many had increased in the knowledge and love of God.’

March 1747: ‘The society, which the first year consisted of about eight hundred members, is now reduced to four hundred; but according to the old proverb, the half is more than the whole. We shall not be ashamed of any of these when we speak with our enemies in the gate.’

July 1748: ‘I examined the classes and found not only an increase of number, but likewise more of the life and power of religion among them than ever I had found before.’

October 1749: ‘At the meeting of the select society, such a flame broke out as was never there before. We felt such a love to each other as we could not express; such a spirit of supplication, and such a glad acquiescence in all the providences of God, and confidence that He would withhold from us no good thing.’

April 1751: ‘The rain obliged me to preach in the House both morning and afternoon. The spirit of the people refreshed me much as it almost always does. I wish all our societies were like-minded - as loving, simple, and zealous of good works.’

May 1752: ‘We had the best-dressed congregation that ever I saw in this place. I spoke very plain, yet all were patient, and looked as if they understood what was said.’

May 1755: ‘I did not find things here in the order I expected. Many were on the point of leaving the Church, which some have done already; and, as they supposed, on my authority! Oh how much discord is caused by one jarring string! How much trouble by one man who does not walk by the same rule and agree in the same judgement with his brethren!...

‘In the following week I spake to the members of the society severally, and found far fewer than I expected prejudiced against the Church; I think not above forty in all. And I trust the plague is now stayed.’

June 1757: ‘I took the opportunity of making a collection for the poor, many of whom can very hardly support life in the present scarcity.’

June 1759: ‘Certainly, if I did not believe there was another world, I should spend all my summers here, as I know no place in Great Britain comparable to it for pleasantness. But I seek another country, and therefore am content to be a wanderer upon earth.’

April 1764: ‘No jar, no contention is here; but all are peaceably and lovingly striving together for the hope of the gospel.’

June 1764: ‘The fire had not gone out since I was here. I felt it as soon as I began to speak; and so, it seems, did the whole congregation.’

May 1768: ‘I preached ... in the evening at Newcastle, in the old custom-house, a large, commodious room near the quay-side, the grand resort of publicans and sinners.’

May 1770: ‘I began again the meeting of the children, which had been neglected for some months; and we had a token for good: two or three were cut to the heart, and many seemed much affected.’

June 1772: ‘Upon examination, I found the society at Newcastle also smaller than it was two years since. This I can impute to nothing but the want of visiting from house to house, without which the people will hardly increase, either in number or grace.’

May 1777: ‘I love our brethren in the southern counties; but still I find few among them that have the spirit of our northern societies.’

May 1780: ‘At five I preached at the Garth Heads to a still more numerous congregation [than at Sheephill]; but there were few among them who remembered my first preaching near that place in the Keelmen’s Hospital. For what reason the wise managers of that place forbade my preaching there any more, I am yet still to learn.’

June 1782: ‘Wednesday the 19th, and the following days, I examined the society. I found them increased in grace, though not in number. I think four in five, at least, were alive to God. To quicken them more I divided all the classes anew, according to their places of abode. Another thing I observed: the congregations were larger, morning and evening, than any I have seen these twenty years.’

June 1784: ‘I preached ... in the evening at Newcastle, where I had now great satisfaction, the congregation, both morning and evening, being larger than they had been for many years, and the society being much alive, and in great peace and harmony.’

May 1788: ‘In the evening I preached at Newcastle, to such a congregation as was never there before, unless on a Sunday; and indeed all the congregations, morning and evening, were such as had not been before since the house was built. Surely this is the accepted time for Newcastle. Perhaps I may see it no more!’

June 1788: ‘In the evening I preached near the Keelmen’s Hospital, within sight of the place where I preached the first Sunday I was at Newcastle; and I think to the largest congregation which I have seen in Newcastle since that time... The people appeared to devour the word, and I did not spare them.’

June 1790: ‘We reached Newcastle. In this and Kingswood house, were I to do my own will, I should choose to spend the short remainder of my days. But it cannot be; this is not my rest. This and the next evening we had a numerous congregation, and the people seemed much alive...’

[Five days later] ‘Having dispatched all the business I had to do here, in the evening I took a solemn leave of this lovely people, perhaps never to see them more in this life, and set out early in the morning.’
