this book is all about how to make pretty towels with sashiko embroidery that have a great variety of everyday uses.
sashiko embroidery is a traditional japanese needle craft, with repeating stitches that create a beautiful overall pattern. this book has a number of designs that can be used on hand towels or small cloths, to create a lovely and useful textile works.
most of the projects are designed for and shown as 35 cm square or 32 by 42 cm sized towels, but you could easily modify the patterns if you wanted to make a smaller or larger project. the patterns range from simple geometric designs, including very traditional motifs, to more modern and contemporary designs such as tea cups or cooking pot, to those that include cute mushrooms, flowers and bunnies.
what’s wonderful about this book is that the full patterns are included, so you can easily copy them, and each pattern is also shown in detail, along with the stitching directions and a sample of the finished product. All the written instructions are in japanese, but the very detailed and well-documented process included great photos, so you should have no trouble at all recreating any or all of these projects. there are directions for how to make a pattern using transfer paper or a fabric marker. if you are brand new to sashiko or embroidery, you might want to look up some basic information about it in english first, but these projects are very straightforward.

A simple repeating pattern I worked on today. I finally have Photoshop Elements, and this is what I really wanted it for.

New layout markings on a freshly-paved section of Beacon Avenue in Seattle suggest SDOT is continuing to flout the adopted Bicycle Master Plan and treat shared lane markings as faux bike lanes. The yellow dot highlights where SDOT has marked the future location of a sharrow, even though the city's Bicycle Master Plan says the sharrow should be centered in the lane.
UPDATE: as a result of this complaint, SDOT has agreed to a new policy of relocating existing sharrows to the center of the travel lane during maintenance work!
Many first-generation shared lane markings in Seattle were placed in the door zone of parking lanes, contrary to the MUTCD's guidance that sharrows are intended to guide cyclists to ride a safe distance from parked cars, since dooring is a major cause of bicyclist injuries in cities. The Seattle Bicycle Advisory Board and other cycling advocates complained repeatedly, to little effect.
In reaction to SDOT's poor placement of sharrows over the past decade, the 2014 Seattle Bicycle Master Plan incorporates very specific language on their location:
4.5.2 Promote visibility of the person on the bicycle. Place shared lane markings in the center of the travel lane on streets with driveways and on-street parking to encourage bicycling outside of the door zone or in potentially low visibility conflict points.
That BMP language aligns with the purposes of the shared lane marking as defined in MUTCD:
A. Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in a shared lane with on-street parallel parking in order to reduce the chance of a bicyclist's impacting the open door of a parked vehicle,
B. Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in lanes that are too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side by side within the same traffic lane,
C. Alert road users of the lateral location bicyclists are likely to occupy within the traveled way,

This stereograph gives you essentially the same image repeated by a factor of two. Throw in the duplicate Boomwhackers in the bin and the multiple squares of each colour in the carpet and I think we've got a candidate for today's anniversaries The Daily Create. And you can imagine this to be candles on a Birthday Cake if you like -- there are four of each tube in the bin!

I liked this brick will because the cement had long ago been painted red as well. I tried to use the combination of light, shadow, angle and depth of field to make this photo as interesting as possible.

Straight from the camera, converted from RAW , no post processing whatsoever . Taken with the 35mm 1.8 DX, a fine lens. However, I find 35 mm on DX to be neither too long nor too wide and thus I hardly use this lens.
