Inside the Tate Modern art gallery London, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London. The weather wasn't kind to us!
Tate Modern is a remarkable combination of old and new. Bankside Power station was built in two phases between 1947 and 1963. It was designed by the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station and Waterloo Bridge. Constructed of a brick shell supported by an interior steel structure, its striking monumental design with its single central chimney, had often led it to be referred to as an industrial cathedral.
In July 1994 an international competition was launched to select an architect to redesign the power station. By November, the initial 148 entrants had been whittled down to a shortlist of six. These were: David Chipperfield Architects; Office for Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas; Renzo Piano Building Workshop; Tadao Ando Architect and Associates; Herzog & de Meuron and Jose Rafael Moneo Arquitecto. You can see all of the proposals presented by the short-listed architects in the Showcase.
In January 1995, the firm Herzog & de Meuron were announced as winners of the competition. The dignified simplicity of their proposal impressed the jury. Their respect for the original architecture, with subtle alterations rather than grand gestures, and the introduction of more light via the enormous roof light box, combined to create an interior both functional and modern.
Did you know?
Gilbert Scott's original design for Bankside Power Station
The height of the chimney of the power station is 99 metres (325ft), and was intentionally built shorter than the Dome of St Paul's Cathedral which stands at 114 metres (375 ft).
Approximately 4.2 million bricks were used in the building of Bankside power station.
The original design for Bankside had two chimneys rather than the single central chimney of the building we see today.
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of Bankside power station, was also the designer of the British red telephone box.

Ludgate Hill, London Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London. The weather wasn't kind to us!
St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of London and mother church of the Diocese of London. It sits at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. The present church, dating from the late 17th century, was designed in the English Baroque style by Sir Christopher Wren. Its construction, completed within Wren's lifetime, was part of a major rebuilding programme which took place in the city after the Great Fire of London.
The cathedral is one of the most famous and most recognisable sights of London, with its dome, framed by the spires of Wren's City churches, dominating the skyline for 300 years.[3] At 365 feet (111 m) high, it was the tallest building in London from 1710 to 1962, and its dome is also among the highest in the world. In terms of area, St Paul's is the second largest church building in the United Kingdom after Liverpool Cathedral.
A Roman temple to Diana may once have stood on the site, but the first Christian cathedral there was dedicated to St. Paul in ad 604, during the rule of King Aethelberht I. That cathedral burned, and its replacement (built 675–685) was destroyed by Viking raiders in 962. In 1087 a third cathedral erected on the site also burned.
Many notable soldiers, artists, and intellectuals have been buried in the crypt, including Lord Nelson, the duke of Wellington, and Wren himself, who was one of the first to be entombed there. Above his resting place is the epitaph composed by his son, ending with the oft-quoted sentence “Lector, si monumentum requiris, circumspice,” which may be translated “Reader, if you seek a monument, look about you.”

Saw this Michael Jackson impersonator on the street in downtown Palo Elto this evening. He was pretty good at his lip singing.
This photo always makes me smile, seeing her genuinely happy. On one of our few trips home to see family.
Enroscado?
Nessa hora Willian engoliu seco.
Willian: Ahh faça-me o favor Victorie! Ela é linda!
Victorie: AHA Willian!!
Willian: Maldição, você sempre faz isso!

Fim o-o~
Kkkkkkkkkkkk
Agora...
Quem será a ruiva do Will??? 8D
Torturous delays force SkyTrain murder victim's mom to relive the horror..
Families deserve timely resolution to these painful crimes
By Jon Ferry, The Province
April 9, 2010.
It's been almost five years since Sandra Martins-Toner's eldest son, Matthew, was brutally murdered after being robbed at a Surrey SkyTrain station.
But the pain is as deep as ever. And the former palliative-care aide sobs as she wonders what terror the diminutive, 16-year-old boy must have endured as he was kicked, beaten ... and had his throat slashed with a beer bottle.
"I often wonder how afraid he must have been by himself there, being beaten like that," Martins-Toner told me in an interview Thursday. "And I wonder if he thought of me or if he called out to me. And as a mother, you know, that's my job, I'm there to protect my children ... and I couldn't be there for him."
It's an emotional cry from an anguished mother and victims'-rights advocate who is still looking for justice, and is still having to relive the horror of that fateful day back in 2005.
The pain is aggravated by the fact that Martins-Toner and her husband, David, now spend much of their day in court right behind the prisoner's dock where Katherine Quinn, the young woman charged with helping to murder Matthew, sits facing a second trial. Quinn's earlier conviction in 2007 was overturned on appeal.
Martins-Toner, who lives in Vancouver, is only in court in New Westminster because her son cannot be there.
"My child has no voice any more to be able to defend himself," she said. "But I'll be damned if I'm not there for him."
And it's abundantly clear that, for her and other victims' mothers in this province, it is our process-obsessed, criminal-friendly justice system, with its seemingly endless procedural delays, that is also on trial this week.
"I feel the entire first trial was for nothing," she said. "We spent almost a year-and-a-half preparing for the trial and then another six, seven weeks during the trial, and I feel everything was for nothing."
At the first trial in 2007, the 27-year-old Quinn, herself the mother of three children, and her boyfriend, Robert Forslund, were both found guilty of second-degree murder in Matthew's death and sentenced to life. But last year, the B.C. Court of Appeal overturned Quinn's conviction and ordered a new trial, after finding that the evidence that she'd directed Forslund to kill Matthew was inconclusive.
It's a legal saga which reminds me of the legal manoeuvring following the swarming death of 14-year-old Reena Virk in Esquimalt in 1997 — and which continued until last summer, when the Supreme Court of Canada finally restored a second-degree murder conviction against Kelly Ellard, 15 at the time of the murder.
"It's been 12 years of a legal quagmire," Virk's father, Manjit, was quoted as saying at the time.
Legal quagmire, in fact, is a good description of the mess our convoluted courts often find themselves in these days.
Martins-Toner, who lost her Lions Gate Hospital job and is now executive-director of the victims'-rights' group Families Against Crime and Trauma, acknowledges that Crown prosecutors go out of their way now to ensure she understands what's going on.
"But I have other families who have come to us and said, 'They won't even talk to us. They won't even tell us what to expect,'" she said.
"And that breaks my heart because those aren't file numbers, those aren't case numbers that you're prosecuting on behalf of the state. Those are our children."
And these are our courts. And they can do much better than this.

The Last Six Minutes - A Mother's Loss and Quest for Justice
Reliving my to trip to Europe Sept - Nov 2012.
Tower of London, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. Wish I could have had more as this is where I lived for sixteen years. The weather was overcast and fogy..just about raining.. but it wasn't cold!
Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins),[3] although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

So relived... so happy.
Here is my post from Facebook:
Compton, just shortly after it got totally dark, and I got a call about a dog who was abandoned by her owners. When these people were confronted by neighbors, they said "we don't want her anymore". They just packed up their "stuff" and left.
I arrived at the location to find LOLA hiding in the bushes. I approached her slowly, offered her some food, but she was too nervous to take food out of my hand after spending many nights out on the streets.
Then, like a scene from a battlefield, just like a coordinated attack - explosions from all directions!!! Kids started playing with fireworks all around the neighborhood. I quickly placed my Lucky Leash on Lola so she won't run away, grabbed my flash light, my camera, and we got out of there... it's unpleasant to be in this neighborhood and with some of these explosions you're not even sure if it's gun shots (you'll get it when I'll post the video) ;-)
As 4th. of July approaches in a few days, more and more kids will play with fireworks, and it is CRITICAL for everybody to pay extra attention to their animals more than ever... these fireworks scare the hell out of many animals, and every year many animals get hit by cars and die because the dog freaked out and ran to the street to escape the noise. Many animals will also end up at the shelters for that same reason, and sometimes the dogs will run so far to a location where owners may not even consider to look at.
If your pets don't have a collar and a name tag, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get one TODAY during your lunch break or after work. I, for example, don't leave my dogs alone on 4th of July... my Dolly is so scared of these explosions, and I stay home with her - this gives her a sense of security and safety.
BACK TO LOLA - I took her to the hospital, cleaned her up, and decided that it was time again for Hope For Paws to team up with Victoria Burrows Star Paws Rescue Animal Charity who will handle her adoption. Lola is only a year old, super sweet Maltese mix, and you can see photos from her rescue here: www.flickr.com/eldad75
If you would like to adopt her, please contact Star Paws.
Thanks for reading this long post :-)

As the TBM breaks through. The project Superintendent and the project manager take the first look.
We went to the next project to watch it come through. It was only inches off after a 4 mile journey underground being driven by lasers.
The Chicago Deep Tunnel Project (TARP) 400 feet (40 stories) underground. The 40 mile tunnel was built under the cal sag canal to relive flooding in the Chicago area. A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was a 40 foot cutting head that drilled the hole through the solid rock using lasers to keep on track. As the machine cycled forward, a track was built under the machine. Then the trailing floor rolled onto the new track. Trains would run from the main shaft carrying the rock out, there was a switching floor on the trailing floor that moved the box cars from one side to the other for the return journey. when the train reached the main shaft, the entire car was spun round to dump the load. Really impressive system. This shot would have been in the first few weeks of drilling as the trailing floor had not yet arrived to the area which was bored by the TBM.

In the Crypt Museum at All Hallows-by-the-Tower Church in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. Wish I could have had more as this is where I lived for sixteen years. The weather was overcast and fogy..just about raining.. but it wasn't cold!
The Crypt Museum leads you on a fascinating journey through time, beginning with the Roman tessellated floor of a domestic house in the late 2nd Century and charting the history of the church, its people and the City of London.
The museum is in part of the original Saxon church and contains a collection of Roman and Saxon artefacts, church plate and ancient registers dating back to the 16th century. Their entries record the baptism of William Penn, the marriage of John Quincy-Adams and the burial of Archbishop William Laud amongst many other historic events on Tower Hill.
A model of Talbot House recalls the work of the Rev'd 'Tubby' Clayton, former Vicar of All Hallows and founder of TocH.
All Hallows-by-the-Tower, also previously dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin and sometimes known as All Hallows Barking, is an ancient Anglican church on Byward Street in the City of London, overlooking the Tower of London.

All Hallows by the Tower is the oldest church in the City of London and was founded 300 years before the Tower of London by nearly three hundred years, having been founded by the Abbey of Barking in 675AD. An arch from the Saxon church can still be seen today. In the crypt beneath is a Roman pavement, discovered in 1926, evidence of city life on this site for nearly two thousand years.
Located next to the Tower of London, the church has cared for numerous beheaded bodies brought for temporary burial following their executions on Tower Hill, including those of Thomas More, Bishop John Fisher and Archbishop Laud.
In 1666 the Great Fire of London started in Pudding Lane, a few hundred yards from the church. All Hallows survived through the efforts of Admiral Penn (William Penn's father) who, along with his friend Samuel Pepys, watched London burn from the tower of the church. William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was baptised in the church and educated in the old schoolroom.
John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the USA, was married in All Hallows in 1797 and the Marriage Register entry is on display in the Undercroft Museum.
The church suffered extensive bomb damage during World War II and only the tower and the walls remained. The church was rebuilt after the war and was rededicated in 1957. The vicar at the time was the Rev'd "Tubby" Clayton, founder of the Toc H movement whose lamp of maintenance still shines in the Lady Chapel.

This shows what happens when your hit by someone on a cell phone while driving!!! My wife was sitting at a redlight when a jerk talking on his hands free cell phone going at 50 MPH rear ended my wife because he was not paying attention to the road. Life is so much more important than a cell phone call!!!!!! My son suffered a severe brain injury in this accident and I have gone round and round with myself whether to post these pics. As a public announcement I have decided too, but it is heart wrenching for my wife and I to look at these and see the blood in the car and relive this moment. My oldest was the one in the accident, (Patrick) and as you can see in the pics I have posted he is doing fine now after a long 5 year road of doctors and therapy, and tutors. PLEASE, WHEN YOUR DRIVING PULL OVER TO HAVE THAT CONVERSATION, SAVE A LIFE BECAUSE IT COULD BE YOURS THAT YOUR SAVING. PS- By the way the driver of the Ford Expedition that was on his phone received a 200.00 fine and went on with his life. Think about that, but if my son would of died like he almost did the driver of the Ford was going to be charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Monument to the Great Fire of London Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. it had started to rain at times and we were walking from Tower of London to St Pauls.
The Monument to the Great Fire of London, more commonly known simply as the Monument, is a fluted Doric column in the City of London, near the northern end of London Bridge, which commemorates the Great Fire of London.
It stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill, 202 ft (62 m) tall and 202 ft (62 m) from the spot in Pudding Lane where the Great Fire started on 2 September 1666. Another monument, the Golden Boy of Pye Corner, marks the point near Smithfield where the fire was stopped. Constructed between 1671 and 1677, it is the tallest isolated stone column in the world and was built on the site of St. Margaret's, Fish Street, the first church to be burnt down by the Great Fire.
The Monument comprises a fluted Doric column built of Portland stone topped with a gilded urn of fire. It was designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke. Its height marks its distance from the site of the shop of Thomas Farynor, the king's baker, where the Great Fire began.
The top of the Monument is reached by a narrow winding staircase of 311 steps. A mesh cage was added in the mid-19th century at the top to prevent people jumping off, after six people had committed suicide from the structure between 1788 and 1842.
Three sides of the base carry inscriptions in Latin. The one on the south side describes actions taken by King Charles II following the fire. The one on the east describes how the Monument was started and brought to perfection, and under which mayors. Inscriptions on the north side describe how the fire started, how much damage it caused, and how it was eventually extinguished. In 1681, the words "but Popish frenzy, which wrought such horrors, is not yet quenched" were added to the end of the inscription. Text on the east side generally blames Roman Catholics for the fire, and this prompted Alexander Pope to say of the area that it is:
Where London's column, pointing at the skies, Like a tall bully, lifts the head, and lies.
– Moral Essays, Epistle iii. line 339 (1733–1734).
The words were chiselled out in 1830.
The west side of the base displays a sculpture, by Caius Gabriel Cibber, in alto and bas relief, of the destruction of the City; with Charles II and his brother, James, the Duke of York (later James II), surrounded by liberty, architecture, and science, giving directions for its restoration.

The Walrus & The Carpenter pub 45 Monument Street, London, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. it had started to rain at times and we were walking from Tower of London to St Pauls.
London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. It is the most populous city in the United Kingdom with a metropolitan area of over 13 million inhabitants. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia, its history going back to its founding by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) mediaeval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core.
Two recent discoveries indicate probable very early settlements near the Thames in the London area. In 1999, the remains of a Bronze Age bridge were found on the foreshore north of Vauxhall Bridge. This bridge either crossed the Thames, or went to a (lost) island in the river. Dendrology dated the timbers to 1500BC. In 2010 the foundations of a large timber structure, dated to 4500BC, were found on the Thames foreshore, south of Vauxhall Bridge. The function of the mesolithic structure is not known. Both structures are on South Bank, at a natural crossing point where the River Effra flows into the River Thames.
The etymology of London is uncertain. It is an ancient name, found in sources from the 2nd century. It is recorded c. 121 as Londinium, which points to Romano-British origin.

London Bridge Quarter stands at the heart of this vital community. The architectural masterworks of The Shard and The Place, the transformed transport hub, the new retail space and the landscaped public realm reveal the city's confidence and capacity for reinvention.
Bankside is a district of London, England, and part of the London Borough of Southwark. Bankside is located on the southern bank of the River Thames, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Charing Cross, running from a little west of Blackfriars Bridge to just a short distance before London Bridge at St Mary Overie Dock to the east.
