In The Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington, London Oct 21, 2012 England. Day one of our stay in London.. Wish I could have had more as this is where I lived for sixteen years. The weather was overcast and just about raining.. but it wasn't cold!
The Victoria and Albert Museum,
London, is the world's largest museum of decorative arts and design, housing a permanent collection of over 4.5 million objects. It was founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The V&A is located in the Brompton district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in an area that has become known as "Albertopolis" because of its association with Prince Albert, the Albert Memorial and the major cultural institutions with which he was associated. These include the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum and the Royal Albert Hall. The museum is a non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Like other national British museums, entrance to the museum has been free since 2001.

All Hallows by the Tower is the oldest church in the City of London and was founded 300 years before the Tower of London by nearly three hundred years, having been founded by the Abbey of Barking in 675AD. An arch from the Saxon church can still be seen today. In the crypt beneath is a Roman pavement, discovered in 1926, evidence of city life on this site for nearly two thousand years.
Located next to the Tower of London, the church has cared for numerous beheaded bodies brought for temporary burial following their executions on Tower Hill, including those of Thomas More, Bishop John Fisher and Archbishop Laud.
In 1666 the Great Fire of London started in Pudding Lane, a few hundred yards from the church. All Hallows survived through the efforts of Admiral Penn (William Penn's father) who, along with his friend Samuel Pepys, watched London burn from the tower of the church. William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania, was baptised in the church and educated in the old schoolroom.
John Quincy Adams, sixth president of the USA, was married in All Hallows in 1797 and the Marriage Register entry is on display in the Undercroft Museum.
The church suffered extensive bomb damage during World War II and only the tower and the walls remained. The church was rebuilt after the war and was rededicated in 1957. The vicar at the time was the Rev'd "Tubby" Clayton, founder of the Toc H movement whose lamp of maintenance still shines in the Lady Chapel.

Reliving historic moments at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia, former NASA astronaut Thomas Stafford practices docking techniques at a simulator July 16 as former Russian cosmonaut Alexey Leonov looks on. The activity took place during a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Apollo-Soyuz mission that opened a new era of space cooperation between the U.S. and Russia. Stafford commanded the Apollo spacecraft and Leonov commanded the Soyuz 19 spacecraft that docked on July 17, 1975 in the first-ever linkup of American and Russian space vehicles.

04/05/2014. Here we take a glimpse back into the golden years of bus travel.
The Bus Depot in Barry has been a fully functional depot on more than one occasion starting life a the home of Western Welsh, before moving on to hold the National Welsh fleet.
It closed it's doors in August 1992 after the downturn that was caused by the Thatcher government's privitisation policy.
For years to come the depot was used for various purposes such as storing the 'Barry Ten' railway steam locomotives.
Finally in 2008 the depot was given a new lease of life when it was bought by the Cardiff Transport Preservation Group.
Today it is home to more than 26 classic buses and coaches from across the South Wales valleys.

Jack Hargreaves, 'Out of Town: A Life Relived on Television', Dovecote Press 1987

...and my Wikipedia article about my stepfather:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Hargreaves
The URL on Soundcloud - below - is for the soundtrack of Jack Hargreaves' last 'Out of Town' broadcast on Southern Television made in 1981 shortly before the station lost its franchise. The lack of a picture seems to make J's words more independent of their time, allowing me to imagine what he's observing, as in an unillustrated book. Distant sounds enter the background briefly. If the film was made in his usual way, it would have been filmed mute. A soundtrack appropriate to the film would be added in the studio and J would then record a commentary that would be spliced into the broadcast programme. My stepfather would not have been talking as the film was made, but sitting or standing beside his cameraman - Stan Bréhaut (Bray-o) - who'd been the other half of nearly all his programmes for Southern TV over 30 years. Stan filmed with an Arriflex camera without sound. Not until late in the series did he use a tripod..

At the end of this track there's a video clip that I did find in which JH says 'cheerio' and opens a bottle of beer. This can be seen on a special episode of 'Out of Town' on Southern Television's successor Meridian, 'One more out of Town' at:

This programme compered by his friend and colleague Fred Dinenage was coincidentally broadcast the evening Jack died on 15 March 1994. Fred when I met him at Jack's funeral and who knew Jack was ill at the time the programme was made, said it was typical of his professionalism that whether by luck or magical intention it should have gone out that same night. JH had a liking for the risks of live TV, but this evening had been pre-recorded. Isobel, his wife of thirty years, who died in 1998, told me that though Fred had kindly sent her a tape shortly after the broadcast, she couldn't bring herself to watch it. I've never been able to find the original master track.
In July 2010 Ian Wegg, who'd traced me through the internet, kindly sent me a DVD containing the whole programme. I’ve edited it to show the episode of Out of Town that JH agreed to make for the broadcast, though the series had actually ended 13 years earlier shortly before Southern Television lost its franchise. In this 'special' the shed is not the usual studio rig, but one of my stepfather's real sheds - one at his last home, Raven Cottage, near Belchalwell in Dorset. Who was behind the camera then? I don't know. The broadcast includes a reunion between Jack and his companion entertainers on ‘How!’ the popular children’s programme he invented.
At the time this programme went out I was on a train. A few hours earlier I'd been beside Jack’s hospital bed with Bay, my sister. He was in a coma; had been far away since he'd arrived at the Hospital a few days earlier; already becoming part of everything, even though he seemed so palpably there and just in heavy sleep. At moments I’d wanted to raise my voice and shake him awake but he was a long way off. All the same we spoke to him in case he might have heard us somewhere in some last liminal space. Perhaps our voices hovered on a riverbank as he gazed at a rise or heard us by the edge of some wintry wood in the evening or imagined all of us, Bay and me and Mum, in the suspended time of dreams, strolling up Regent Street together after seeing a film in Leicester Square long ago, feeling it was now. Perhaps our murmurs by his bed fused with our childhood chatter in one river - Lambourn, Winterbourne, Kennet, Enborne, Itchen and Stour flowing together. Perhaps I’d imagined him a little boy again remembering his mother and father and brothers and the bullnose Morris days long before he knew us; long before the war and its intensities, Fleet Street, television studios, advertising agencies, cities of the plain and their dangerous women.
Perhaps all these were fleeting together to drift on the surface like sun sparkling off a cold chalk stream hiding for a moment the clean gravel, crayfish, caddis tubes and mayfly larvae, miller’s thumbs and brown trout suspended in the invisible current, with water crowfoot and emerald starwort stroking their golden scales.
Bay and me had eaten in Dorchester, then caught the train together and talked about Jack and Mum and our own children and us. It was the longest we’d been together for ages. I left Bay at Southampton so she could go on to London, phoning her husband Gabe to say she was on her way. “I think we’ll be back quite soon“ she’d said. Isobel rang me just after I’d got home to Birmingham saying Jack slipped away as the nurses turned him in the bed at 8-o-clock that evening when my train was somewhere between Banbury and Leamington Spa.
I have streamed more of Jack's programmes on Vimeo:

The museum is in part of the original Saxon church and contains a collection of Roman and Saxon artefacts, church plate and ancient registers dating back to the 16th century. Their entries record the baptism of William Penn, the marriage of John Quincy-Adams and the burial of Archbishop William Laud amongst many other historic events on Tower Hill.

London Bridge Quarter stands at the heart of this vital community. The architectural masterworks of The Shard and The Place, the transformed transport hub, the new retail space and the landscaped public realm reveal the city's confidence and capacity for reinvention.
Bankside is a district of London, England, and part of the London Borough of Southwark. recently returned from a trip to California with the kids...it took us a couple of days of restabilizing - then we were able to look at the photos...
it had been over 5 years since we had all been back together. some big changes had happened, most significantly my grandmother's death in february; my grandfather passed away in 2006. i had wanted the trip to be about family and letting my kids get reconnected. and they did..big time. we were able to have one last family 4th of july at my grandparent's house before it's sold on...road trips up and down the state...big rocks and beaches...birthday celebrations....roller coasters...pools and pizza.....aquariums....and more family. i'm grateful for the time we got to spend together.
I didn't get to all the places where I wanted to go, but we went where we needed to go...

Reliving the awesome visit to Yellowstone just about a year ago, processing some more photos...
This is a panorama of Midway Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park taken from the ridge to the east taking in a view about 180° wide. The Firehole River flows through the basin, providing the water for the hot springs and geysers powered by the hot spot relatively close to the surface here. Grand Loop Road parallels the river. Near the center is the wildly colorful Grand Prismatic Spring, along with Excelsior Geyser, it's pool emptying back into the river. Numerous other hot springs and geysers dot the landscape, along with old volcanic cinder cones on the right.

Tower Bridge (built 1886–1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London which crosses the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name, and has become an iconic symbol of London.
The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour.

Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress, known as the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078, and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins),[3] although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under Kings Richard the Lionheart, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

Tower of London, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. Wish I could have had more as this is where I lived for sixteen years. The weather was overcast and fogy..just about raining.. but it wasn't cold!

Monument to the Great Fire of London Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. it had started to rain at times and we were walking from Tower of London to St Pauls.
The Monument to the Great Fire of London, more commonly known simply as the Monument, is a fluted Doric column in the City of London, near the northern end of London Bridge, which commemorates the Great Fire of London.
It stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill, 202 ft (62 m) tall and 202 ft (62 m) from the spot in Pudding Lane where the Great Fire started on 2 September 1666. Another monument, the Golden Boy of Pye Corner, marks the point near Smithfield where the fire was stopped. Constructed between 1671 and 1677, it is the tallest isolated stone column in the world and was built on the site of St. Margaret's, Fish Street, the first church to be burnt down by the Great Fire.
The Monument comprises a fluted Doric column built of Portland stone topped with a gilded urn of fire. It was designed by Christopher Wren and Robert Hooke. Its height marks its distance from the site of the shop of Thomas Farynor, the king's baker, where the Great Fire began.
The top of the Monument is reached by a narrow winding staircase of 311 steps. A mesh cage was added in the mid-19th century at the top to prevent people jumping off, after six people had committed suicide from the structure between 1788 and 1842.
Three sides of the base carry inscriptions in Latin. The one on the south side describes actions taken by King Charles II following the fire. The one on the east describes how the Monument was started and brought to perfection, and under which mayors. Inscriptions on the north side describe how the fire started, how much damage it caused, and how it was eventually extinguished. In 1681, the words "but Popish frenzy, which wrought such horrors, is not yet quenched" were added to the end of the inscription. Text on the east side generally blames Roman Catholics for the fire, and this prompted Alexander Pope to say of the area that it is:
Where London's column, pointing at the skies, Like a tall bully, lifts the head, and lies.
– Moral Essays, Epistle iii. line 339 (1733–1734).
The words were chiselled out in 1830.
The west side of the base displays a sculpture, by Caius Gabriel Cibber, in alto and bas relief, of the destruction of the City; with Charles II and his brother, James, the Duke of York (later James II), surrounded by liberty, architecture, and science, giving directions for its restoration.

Inside the Tate Modern art gallery London, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London. The weather wasn't kind to us!
Tate Modern is a remarkable combination of old and new. Bankside Power station was built in two phases between 1947 and 1963. It was designed by the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station and Waterloo Bridge. Constructed of a brick shell supported by an interior steel structure, its striking monumental design with its single central chimney, had often led it to be referred to as an industrial cathedral.
In July 1994 an international competition was launched to select an architect to redesign the power station. By November, the initial 148 entrants had been whittled down to a shortlist of six. These were: David Chipperfield Architects; Office for Metropolitan Architecture/Rem Koolhaas; Renzo Piano Building Workshop; Tadao Ando Architect and Associates; Herzog & de Meuron and Jose Rafael Moneo Arquitecto. You can see all of the proposals presented by the short-listed architects in the Showcase.
In January 1995, the firm Herzog & de Meuron were announced as winners of the competition. The dignified simplicity of their proposal impressed the jury. Their respect for the original architecture, with subtle alterations rather than grand gestures, and the introduction of more light via the enormous roof light box, combined to create an interior both functional and modern.
Did you know?
Gilbert Scott's original design for Bankside Power Station
The height of the chimney of the power station is 99 metres (325ft), and was intentionally built shorter than the Dome of St Paul's Cathedral which stands at 114 metres (375 ft).
Approximately 4.2 million bricks were used in the building of Bankside power station.
The original design for Bankside had two chimneys rather than the single central chimney of the building we see today.
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of Bankside power station, was also the designer of the British red telephone box.

Aquela voz.
Willian: Vem aqui...
Relive videos of my five day motorcycle tour around the Borders. Some great roads, lovely towns and for the most of it great weather.
make sure you take plenty of pictures. make sure you write things down on anything near you. capture the memories so that when they can no longer be remember the one who made them, others can relive them in their minds for you over and over. dance with stars until your knees go weak and you have to collapse, letting the music play endlessly through the space. make love to the moon with your eyes, because this beauty is a privallege. when your hair is let out of that bun you have it confined to, the wind will whisper secrets to every strand. it's life story will unfold with every rythmic hum of breeze. when it's dark outside and the dew drops are beginning to cling to the blades of grass, kick off your shoes and let the liquid be absorbed into your skin. don't let others tell you what to do, this is your time. they should be worrying about their own. when your heart skips a beat, take that milisecond to enjoy life and know that the earth was around before you were, but it was not the same. people live and then they move on. we don't know where they go. some believe heaven or hell, others believe to a new life and others think we simply spiral into a black abyss. we won't know until we get there. I hope it is a happy green pasture that stretches on infinitely where clouds do not exist and the emotion anger ceases to as well. we can only be happy or sad. mostly happy, as we watch our family and friends continue to grow in the time their living, breathing bodies have been given. we only feel sad when we realize the world we're now in is only real to those of us trapped in it. there is no coming or going. but then the music plays that seranaded you when you glided with the stars. the wind that told tales to your hair captivates you and you realize that life is a gift. I don't know where we will go, I only hope that in the end this mind-engulfing fear of everything ending is put to rest and I can be truly free to reside on the mountains I moved in this lifetime.

London Bridge Quarter, London Borough of Southwark, Oct 22, 2012 England. Day two of our stay in London.. Wish I could have had more as this is where I lived for sixteen years. The weather was overcast and fogy..just about raining.. but it wasn't cold!
London Bridge Quarter stands at the heart of this vital community. The architectural masterworks of The Shard and The Place, the transformed transport hub, the new retail space and the landscaped public realm reveal the city's confidence and capacity for reinvention.

Bankside is located on the southern bank of the River Thames, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Charing Cross, running from a little west of Blackfriars Bridge to just a short distance before London Bridge at St Mary Overie Dock to the east.
