Peggy McGivern

Balancing Act - 2025

Coming from three generations of accomplished artists, Peggy McGivern considers her work second nature and ongoing. “I would hope that my work is constantly evolving,” she says of her ongoing series, one being strikingly different from another. When I’m working toward an upcoming show I try to relate each painting to the one before. If it’s a landscape show I will have a common thread such as barns close up, far away, falling down or under construction”.

Her ‘Dreamscapes’ series consist of a theme that has been on Peggy’s mind almost from the time she started painting thirty five years ago. “These are the most personal pieces of everything I do. It may be horses flying in the sky representing a child’s imagination or flowerpots and furniture being thrown out of a twisted house”. In 1975 when she lost everything in a bitter divorce, she left her Colorado home with her two children and started an adventure of travel that would last till the early nineties. Among the places that they settled was Manchester, England, where Peggy worked in a pub and sold her painting from behind the bar.

On returning home to Denver, Colorado she accomplished her goal of opening her own gallery, voted “Best New Gallery” in 1992 by Westword Magazine. Nine years later she closed her retail location to devote all her efforts to her own work. Recently she has earned commissions from The Denver Children’s Hospital,The Anschutz Diabetes Center,The Shadow Mountain Institute and was chosen for the 2008 Denver International Airport exhibition. In the book “Finding Your Visual Voice” Peggy is a featured demonstration artist.

Peggy currently exhibits and sells her paintings at galleries across the Southwest, working both plein air and out of her studios in Denver and Taos, New Mexico.

The New Mexico State Capitol and its Capitol Art Collection

Today's New Mexico State Capitol, known as the Roundhouse, is the only round capitol building in the country. It was built by Robert E. McKee with a design by W.C. Kruger that combined elements of New Mexico Territorial style, Pueblo adobe architecture and Greek Revival adaptations. The 232,000 square-foot Roundhouse was dedicated on Dec. 8, 1966.

The New Mexico Capitol Art Collection offers a unique and often overlooked experience. Unlike the overwhelming array of art scattered across the city, this collection provides an easily accessible, free, and comprehensive showcase of contemporary art. It stands as a testament to the region’s artistic prowess, featuring an array of works from artists hailing from Taos to Tucumcari and many places in between.

The New Mexico Capitol Art Collection is not just a static display but an evolving exhibition. It boasts a permanent exhibition along with temporary exhibitions in the Rotunda shows, ensuring that each visit to the Capitol brings something new and exciting. This dynamic nature of the collection, with ongoing additions, makes it a living archive of contemporary art in the region. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a frequent guest, the collection promises to offer new perspectives and insights into New Mexico’s vibrant art scene.

From a bird's-eye view, the Roundhouse resembles the Zia sun symbol, which is also emblazoned on the New Mexico state flag. The image, which originated at Zia Pueblo, incorporates elements representing the sun's rays, the four directions, the four seasons, and the four phases of life. The State Seal of New Mexico, carved in stone, hangs above each of the Roundhouse's four entrance wings.

The four-story Roundhouse includes a subterranean story and a central interior Rotunda that rises 60 feet through the top three stories. The Rotunda's design elements include New Mexico Travertine marble featuring a turquoise and brass mosaic depicting the New Mexico State Seal. The ceiling skylight of stained glass is patterned after a Native American basket weave symbolizing the sky and the earth.

The New Mexico Capitol Art Collection was created in 1991 when the New Mexico Legislature founded the Capitol Art Foundation. The Collection consists of nearly 600 artworks, exhibited in the interior public spaces of the State Capitol Complex, as well as on the Capitol grounds. The Collection includes paintings, photography, works on paper, sculpture, mixed media, textiles, ceramic and glass works, as well as furniture. In all there are over 600 New Mexico artists represented.

The Clay Buchanan Memorial Gardens on the Roundhouse's 6.5 acre grounds display sequoias, Russian olive trees, roses and more than 100 other kinds of New Mexico flora as well as abstract and figurative sculptures from the Capitol Art Collection.

How I Feel about Puppy Mills: I am descendant of a puppy mill dog and I have the misfortune of several genetic defects as a result of poor breeding practices. I, therefore, am appalled by the practices of the pet industry as it relates to puppy mills and pet stores who sell puppies. So I say STOP PUPPY MILLS NOW!!

Mungret Monastery (The Abbey Church)

Limerick, Co. Limerick, Republic of Ireland

Referred to as 'The Abbey Church' the building as it appears today was neither part of the original monastery nor a later religious order. It was built as the parish church to serve the manor and parish of Mungret. There are very few surviving records relating to this church. Following the transfer of the monastic holdings to the Bishop of Limerick, the income from the church (the living) was conferred on the Cathedral and became the living of the Dean of the Cathedral Chapter (the senior prelate). It was most likely that a curate would actually have been in residence. After 1571 the Abbey came under the control of the Church of Ireland. A report from 1611 stated that the church and chancel were in good repair. There is a reference to a vicar in 1752, but by 1781 it was no longer roofed. In 1880 the 'Abbey Church' was vested in the Office of Public Works to become a National Monument due to its 'architectural character and antiquity'. The surrounding graveyards were vested in the Local Authority.

Following Henry VIII's break with Rome and the Reformation of the church in England, the Church of Ireland was established as the official Church of the State in Ireland in 1536, a situation which continued until 1871 when the Irish Church Act (1869) changed it to a voluntary Christian community. The post reformation clergy continued to worship in the existing parish churches. This was the case in Mungret with the Church of Ireland worshiping in the medieval parish church. There is a reference to a vicar as late as 1752, but certainly by the 1780s there was no long a roof on the building. The congregation would have been served by the nearby parishes in the City of Kilkeedy. The Board of First Fruits was set up in 1711 to build and improve the churches and rectories in Ireland. It was funded by taxes on clerical incomes which were, in turn, funded by tithes. From 1777 it was supplemented by grants from parliament. In 1822 Mungret Parish received a grant of 300 pounds towards the building of a church in Mungret which was consecrated in 1825. This was designed by the architect James Pain (c1179-1877) who was appointed provincial architect for Munster to the Board of First Fruits. The architect's drawings, on which the reconstruction is based, are held in the library of the Representative Church Body of the Church of Ireland. The was designed to hold 100, mostly with box pews and a distinctive feature was the octagonal tower at the west end.

The Glebe house (now known as Mount Mungret) was also built with a grant in 1826. The church would have served the Bindons (landowners in the area) whose estate was sold in 1851. Seventy acres of the estate was bought by the Church of Ireland Bishop of Limerick, as one of 5 trustees, to create an agricultural school and model farm which opened in 1858 and was the first school at Mungret College. By 1870 the parishioners of Mungret had decreased to just ten and services were only being held 4 times a year. It was amalgamated with St. Michael's parish in Limerick City. The glebe house was sold in 1874. The church closed in 1877 bringing to an end a long tradition of formal worship in Mungret. The roof was removed in 1900. Finally in 1929 the stonework was sold and used in the Catholic Presbytery in Raheen.

The church is in three parts, chancel or choir, nave, and residence. The chancel measures 5.2m wide x 14.93m long internally. It has an original two-light east window with sandstone surrounds. There were 4 windows on the south wall and one on the north. There is a piscina (water basin) on the south wall. There is nothing left of the chancel arch; the current opening is modern and the wall is largely rebuilt. In the 15th century the north and south walls of the chancel were thickened externally; this included a base batter and projections at the east end in the form of buttresses. These works blocked three of the south windows and the north window. The third window on the south wall was altered to a twin-light built of limestone. At the west end the walls were thickened even more to provide an upstairs room which had a chamber at the south containing a garderobe (toilet). Many of the alterations to the nave may also be 15th century, though the building itself appears much older. It measures 7.11m wide x 10.46m long internally. There were opposing doors in the north and south (now blocked) walls. There was an upstairs room at the western end which appears to have been connected to the residence at the west.

The residence is a two story building with a belfry tower. It had an external door at the sourh-east corner and another at the north-east from the nave. The belfry is a narrow tower 12.5m high of 4 floors with a parapet. A straight stone stair rises to the first floor. The remaining floors were of wood supported on ledges on the internal walls and accessed by internal ladders.
