So I thought I'd post a reject of mine from Friday night, really just as an exercise in showing lessons learned so that others might reap the benefit too. One of my side projects has been to get some decent startrail shots. Last Friday was clear for once (hallelujah, it's been grim and cloudy in the UK for 6 weeks) so off I trapsed, set up my gear in the woods and let it do its thing there for 2hr 30. This was the result:
It's obviously a total reject so here are various thoughts.
- WB, set it low to make the sky look blue rather than ghastly orange if you're near any city.
- The longer the better, this is about 1.5 hrs stitched together I think
- I shot for longer but condensation on the lens made the rest unuseable. I've added some of the condensation in at the top on purpose to show the effect, it's that weird streak in the blue at the top. I am buying a couple of hand held fans that'll run on batteries for hrs which I'll mount near the lens and leave running to deal with this.
- Aeroplanes can be annoying, but also attractive. They're not that hard to cancel out though if you want, because they only take place in a few of the frames
- I used continuous mode on this with a remote. It gives the smallest time between exposures so the trails marry up best when you merge them all
- I used startrails.exe to stitch them, a great freebie
- Lightpainting is best done softly and before the main take. This needs a lot more experimentation but the concept is sound I think, especially on old monuments which I'll tackle once I get the machanics firmly down. I bought some big yellow 20 million lux thing from ebay for £20 for this, did the job perfectly. takes 16 hrs to charge though. Note to self, *remember to shine a lot more on the distant trees* :)
- Plan ahead with charging because this was a spur of the moment thing. My battery wasn't full nor the lamp charged
- I have a headband headlamp thing, very useful for hands free operation when it's dark. I recommend it
- To compose, set camera to highest iso, take a pic, then recompose afterwards based on the result. Make sure to remember to iso down afterwards :)
- Typical exposure was 30 secs, f8, iso 400. A little on the dark side so I had to adjust all the raws in bridge
- Be very alert when lightpainting that closer stuff is much brighter. Ie see that bush on the right
- To find polaris, the star that they all turn round, look at the bear and follow the last 2 points (google finding Polaris). In the southern hemisphere you're looking for the southern cross. I'm a geek and always carry a compass round in my car so that when I see decent locations I can check what the view is like looking towards Polaris.
- This was Pentax 10-17mm fisheye corrected with ptlens, a very cool lens correction software. You do need a seriously wide lens to get this stuff, and you'd be surprised at just how steep an angle you need to point it up
- note that I have a silly 30 second limitation on startrail work because the K-7 won't let you turn it off above 30 seconds.
if anyone else has stuff they want to add as lessons for others feel free to post :)
This was my entry for Bricklink's AFOL Designer Program... A 515 parts minifigscale, studless, compact starfighter, with nice building techniques and a modular conception to ease the building.
I made this over spring break a few weeks ago, but looking at it now, I don’t like it as much. Anyways, I was working on both Heart of Ice and concepts for Mad Love during that break, and I made this scene from Mad Love at the time. Following Heart of Ice—which I hope to post another part tonight (A third after that is already done)—I hope to have Mad Love as my next larger story arch.
I’m going to re-make this when I get to Mad Love, so that it’s both uniform in terms of design (Though it will most likely keep its “miniature” style at least for this scene), and most likely functional with the unique, well—set up—I’ll be doing for that story. Well anyways, I guess in the meantime you can enjoy this rejected build of mine!
(End note: No, I do not have tons of other unused build pictures just lying around…)
Did not turn out at all like I wanted, and I would have just deleted it, but that damn bird just keeps staring at me, and I couldn't!
Look at this Large to see what I mean about his stare. Gads!
This partially-eaten bagel was recently seen floating down the Sheboygan River towards Lake Michigan. For some reason it did not meet the buyer's expectations. Perhaps some aquatic wildlife will enjoy it.
accidental diptych. i must not have wound the film properly? or something happened at the print shop. either way... i like it like this.
sur le blog
Not every picture goes the way I want it to, but having wasted two days on these I thought I'd share them anyway!! On the positive side, it's all practice! They are Strictly's Clauda Winkleman and Tess Daley
"Vanadus is an Iron Glatorian traitor who fought in the Second Core War. After being rejected by their own kind, Vanadus turned to the Toa to fight for their right to live, becoming a close friend and confidant of Virse."
When I went over to *GoldenBoy*'s last year, I played around a lot with his metal blue parts and a half-painted Berix helmet to create the first draft of this Glatorian. Since then I've been collecting metal blue to finally put Vanadus together officially. Gotta admit I'm proud of the shaping.
Also, happy 1000th photo guys!
I liked it but I never finished it. About to build either a Pokemon or Hulkbuster with it right now.
a reject from yesterday because i don't want to just post photos of my balls hehe...i can't remember exactly what i used but i'll try and add notes from what i remember...
Approaching the festive season when it's conventional to give gifts, there's always someone who's hard to please, has difficulty making up their mind; a bit of a problem child.
I found this! I thought it looked perfect for Barney. I should get him something. He gets upset when he's left out.
The colour should be agreeable to him. It isn't green. He hates green. It's more aqua than teal, but not blue or red either.
It's just lying on the pavement, a bit grubby. OK, quite grubby. But I think he'll be alright with that. He's never worried about that in the past.
Here you go Barney, I've got this for you. I think you'll find it handy; for your next dummy spit.
Merry Christmas!

Just a bunch of junk that I left behind in one location...either too damaged, boring unis or both. The scrapped Celica is a shame...I've never found a nice one of those. Yes, some of these could have been used for parts, but I could only carry so much back to the car, so these didn't make the cut. I did take a few parts caps that I had a specific need for.
My wife often tells me not to be so quick in deleting my photos. "That's why you have a back-up drive". she says.
I was going to delete a group of Hummingbird photos because I have better ones. Then I looked at them a again before deleting and wondered what they would look like as greeting cards.
Works for me. :)
I actually like this photo, looks like a good portrait imo, but I've got a better idea for this scene but it must wait, till I build a whole Dagobah model ;)
Also took this one for 7DWF but I decided not to use the shot for the theme. Just posting on my feed anyway.
Lily came in to join up with the Jesters Reject show, as Kevin cuts with a whip the straw in half held in Lily's toes the other jester Kent looks on.

While driving to dinner and a drive in movies, we got a little lost and side tracked. An we just happen across this. A replica of the car from A Devils Reject. What a nice detraction.
this was supposed to be a poster and or flyer for an event of some kind. all the text was removed (for non-commercialized reasons)...anyways it was rejected in a very early stage :/
This was a build created a while ago to go in tandem with my finalized Harlequinade build; and was to be presented with a third never built creation (Depicting Harley Quinn singing); but I decided that a finale single build was the only one that was needed (Also I hate this picture--my bricks are too reflective!). This was built before the “final” build, and so the bomb design is very different; I intended to use red bricks for it, but I didn’t have enough of the correct pieces with me at University, so I color swapped red to light bley (Note however, that a smaller scale red bomb did appear in the final presented build).
I’m posting this now as a stall tactic I suppose (Because I hate my stream being inactive)—I’m still waiting on some pieces to arrive, and I suspect the slow campus mail is the reason (Since you know according to tracking they arrived last Friday!). Anyways, assuming I get the parts today after I bring the problem to the mail peoples, I’ll be building the next series of Batman Animated Series builds, based on a single episode—to be posted later this week upon completion.
Edit: Scratch that. Due to an asshole seller, with nock-off products, I'll be switching episodes for the time being. A different series of builds will be made depicting a different episode.
