The train on platform 2-A does not pick up passengers. Love those announcements.

Customers are alighting the 17:27 Albury to Southern Cross service at the end of its journey in late Dec 2021. Though I don't overly hate the V'locitiy Railcar I have ridden them a handful of times, and I also made an effort to travel to Bairnsdale and Warnambool whilst they were still N sets so I can see how people can see that it's more of a regression than progress. The whole idea of replacing loco hauled with DMU isn't horrible at all. Just needed a much more modified version to cater to the longer distances. But hey, I'm just taking a photo. As long as Victoria still serve their regional areas with rail. Unlilke the other Broad Gauge state in Australia.

Originally I took this photo and never processed it after seeing the noise on it. But luckily we live in the 21st century and Adobe has come up with a solution. So here you are looking at a much more enhanced version 3 and a half years later. Thanks Adobe <3.

Aqui nenhuma luz vinga

Regression is meant here in two senses: downgrading, and multivariate statistical cause-and-effect analysis. Quite a few variables in the complex chain of causes and effects concerning climate change come together in this (lucky) shot of the Rotterdam port-industrial complex, the largest of its kind in Europe. Among these are main actual causes, among which are the clearly visible mass exhaust of CO2 and heat (the complex is by far the largest heat source in the nation) and the massive production of fossil fuels (we look at the largest refinery complex in Europe), as well as main climate change effects by the way of massive local rainfall ('aqua bombs', one is just passing here), rising river levels (shown here: the Rhine) and the rising sea level (the North Sea lying here just over the horizon).

The area shown is at triple risk of climate change. Water surges can come either from the river or from the nearby sea (and most possibly from both, acting in tandem), whereby the eventual inundation of large scale chemical and electric production facilities could produce widespread network disruption, energy shortages and severe pollution effects.

Yes, there is a great barrier near the sea that can be closed in an emergency, but nevertheless, let us all prey for serious breakthroughs in the current Paris climate negotiations!

an outtake from this.

There are two types of coastline: coastline in regression and coastline in formation. The Bay of Biscay is of the first type. The elements erode the cliffs, creating voids, caves and arches that end up breaking them. It is an endless process of destruction of the coast that causes it to retreat.

I've always had a fondness for trains and railroads going back to childhood. Trains ran through the town where I grew up and the sound of train whistles is ingrained in my memory. Perhaps as a result, abandoned railroads are particularly sad scenes for me. I think of all of the energy focused on these old rails over the years as trains plied their way back and forth. The tracks in this scene are the remains of an abandoned line I cross frequently. It's been at least 20 years since a train ran through here. The connecting rails in the adjoining towns were removed long ago which leaves this section unattached. I'm not sure why these rails still remain. I'm sure it's just a matter of time until they are pulled up and nature reclaims all traces of the corridor.

I love creating these time-regression images, presenting buildings as they may have looked in bygone years. It's always been a thrill for me to discover long lost historical photos, particularly ones showing structures that are still standing. It's fun to make visual comparisons, to see what has changed and what has remained the same over the years. I can't help but think of the previous dwellers and wonder what became of them.

Regression progress

“I’m now the most miserable man living.”

~Abraham Lincoln, 1841

Back in his days, it was absolutely commonplace to talk about one’s mental state as Abby does in the quote above. Sadly, as a society since then, we have regressed in our willingness to talk openly about the state of our minds. We are now advised by our peers and parents to not reveal our weaknesses. 'Suck it up', they say. But now, a virus from our worst nightmares has frozen the world over into a gigantic pause, proselytizing energetic lives into mental messes. If there was ever a need to openly talk about mental health, it is now.

Unsurprisingly, in the past few weeks, calls to mental health hotlines have doubled. A recent survey in April by San Diego State University revealed eight times higher prevalence of severe mental health issues compared to similar surveys two years ago. Healthcare professionals are quitting... their jobs, and in some sad instances, their lives. Loss of commonplace jobs like waitressing and Uber-driving has plunged young women and men into abysses of uncertainties. A generation of students are missing out on joys bored out of social activities, while their parents are juggling child care with work from home (no, one can’t sneeze and sip tea at the same time, if you are wondering). Senior and older members of our societies are facing ruthless isolation, likes of which have previously been dealt out only to lepers. While many of us find safety and peace in our homes, some of us are not that lucky to have a safe home. Even for the luckier ones, staying within those four walls for weeks is in complete disagreement with our deep instincts to go out and get things done. All of us are feeling abnormal. Utterly abnormal.

There, I said it. Abnormal. Psychologists formally refer to this same feeling as anticipatory grief. Unpack that slowly: Grief… Pain… Loss... from uncertain future. Loss of control. Helplessness. Depression. Dark thoughts. And like any other grief, as my friend Kirk so kindly pointed out the other week in a personal email, anticipatory grief also has those same Kübler-Ross stages that I have been storytelling you for a while with Keats, Emma and Nigel. While I intend to finish that narrative in days to come, a direct monologue with you feels like the order of the day. I am sensing the wall creeping up too close for some of my dear flickr friends, while others are likely following their trained societal instincts and refusing to talk about it. So, please allow the lunatic to break the ice. Let’s talk about the snow and then the thaw.

First and foremost, whatever you are experiencing is normal under our current circumstances. We have all lost our normal lives and – in one way or another – are tip-toeing at a precipice where uncertainties of the future are swirling like dark clouds below. Some are denying (and protesting), some are angry (and protesting or not), others are depressed, while a handful have accepted these circumstances – few of the classic Kübler-Ross stages of grief, you see. The way out from this shamble is actually not that hard: accept the situation for what it is and focus on something that one has total control over – gaining back the sense of control (on anything) is the ticket to feeling somewhat normal. No wonder, so many people have taken to baking breads, gardening, revisiting old books or learning about the virus from authentic sources (excellent thing to do as knowledge negates fear and anxiety), and – as in my case – telling stories. We have all been pushed into this predicament together, so it is fair to hope that we will all come out of it together too. Mourn not, but sing your hymns. Recite your poems. Bake your artisan sourdough. And believe with all your heart, as I do… this haboob too will blow away. When all this is over, everyone of us will have a big role to play in healing wounded minds with our beautiful heartfelt photos. Till then, my friend, hang in tight.

PS: If needed, I’ll gladly talk to you over the phone. Drop me a flickrmail.

Anda tudo do avesso

Nesta rua que atravesso

Dão milhões a que os tem

Aos outros um passou-bem

Não consigo perceber

Quem é que nos quer tramar

Enganar/Despedir

E ainda se ficam a rir

Eu quero acreditar

Que esta merda vai mudar

E espero vir a ter

Uma vida bem melhor

Mas se eu nada fizer

Isto nunca vai mudar

Conseguir/Encontrar

Mais força para lutar...

Senhor engenheiro

Dê-me um pouco de atenção

Há dez anos que estou preso

Há trinta que sou ladrão

Não tenho eira nem beira

Mas ainda consigo ver

Quem anda na roubalheira

E quem me anda a comer

É difícil ser honesto

É difícil de engolir

Quem não tem nada vai preso

Quem tem muito fica a rir

Ainda espero ver alguém

Assumir que já andou

A roubar/A enganar

O povo que acreditou

Conseguir encontrar mais força

Para lutar

Mais força para lutar

Conseguir encontrar mais força

Para lutar

Mais força para lutar...

Senhor engenheiro

Dê-me um pouco de atenção

Há dez anos que estou preso

Há trinta que sou ladrão

Não tenho eira nem beira

Mas ainda consigo ver

Quem anda na roubalheira

E quem me anda a foder

Há dez anos que estou preso

Há trinta que sou ladrão

Mas eu sou um homem honesto

Só errei na profissão

Regression and progression

This and this are two years old now (I spend a little too much time thinking about parallels across time)

Still cannot believe this is probably going to happen. Never thought Tom Holland's Spider-Man would regress back to a Sony-exclusive character after their deal with Disney in 2015.

The two studios delivered us the perfect Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe only to abruptly take him away after a huge cliffhanger all because they can't reach a new agreement.

Now, the possibilities of Spidey joining the next generation of Avengers, meeting Daredevil, and the Fantastic 4 are all gone.

I definitely wanted the larger MCU to take a bit more of a backseat so we could focus more on Peter going forward, but not like this.

If they do this, (for me at least) it's going to be the end of live-action Spider-Man. There is no actor alive and breathing today who can embody the role of Peter Parker like Tom Holland.

I hope Disney & Sony can still work something out, but what a damn shame. I'm just grateful we got as far as we did.

Spider-Man interacted with Iron Man and the Avengers for 5 movies in just 3 years. It was still a major achievement.

Replaced 9/6/2019: Didn't really like the first version of this edit, so I decided to take a second photo that looked closer to what I had originally envisioned for it. Got the inspiration to finally do it following Sony Pictures' chairman finally stating that "the door had been closed for the moment" on Spidey's reentry into the MCU :(

regresso ao passado - Porto, Portugal

Sevastopol, 2015

Upon seeing the autumn wonderland, I regressed into a gawping idiot, albeit one who had great fun prancing through the carpet of leaves on the ground... like an idiot. (Goodness knows what my poor friend was subjected to. I don't even recall what I babbled on at him?!) I also reverted to plonk-doll-down-and-snap mode. /fail

On the other hand this photo hardly needed any editing... or maybe I'm just lazy.

I keep regressing to winter pics.

Expect this behavior to recur occasionally.

See here for a clue to what it is. :-)

I was never much for keeping my colors within the printed lines of my old coloring books. In fact I preferred to draw my own lines and determine color boundaries. That same artistic license extended to the decision on which colors to use. I get that same sense looking at hand colored photos of the past. You get the feeling that the artist was either limited in the colors at hand or just decided that any color was better than no color. So they just went at it, trying to conceal as much of the monochrome area as possible. The result was sometimes a sort of rainbow effect with the colors having very little correlation to the background. Putting realism aside, the photos were charming in their own right.
