As I was driving down this street today I spotted this apple tree. It's leaves had all fallen off but a few stubborn apples were still clinging to the branches.
Day 3 of Snow Event 2014. (I refuse to call this one "Snowpocalypse" since that was the 2008 event.) More snow fell yesterday, it's falling now, and should continue into tomorrow. Sometime later today or overnight it should switch to ice. The "Big Warm Up" should happen tomorrow night. It's supposed to be around 50F/10C come Monday.
Maybe you've heard of purists who refuse to take blue blaze trails? So what would you call north-bound thru hikers who hike south to re-hike a section while carrying a watermelon to eat at the top of a mountain? Lunatics? We didn't like the weather on our first hike up Mt. Greylock so we decided to go backwards and do it again. But then Tim Dugan got a crazy idea. From my journal 8/2/85: "Tim Dugan came up with the idea back in Cheshire to buy a watermelon and carry it up Greylock so Marcel carried it. We split up Marcel's pack and proceeded with 'the watermelon mission.' When we ran into Rasta hiking north he said, 'hey guys, you're going the wrong way.' We laughed and he called us lunatics." From left to right, Tin Man, Marcel, Tim Dugan, and The Merry Slav.
The Festival d'Avignon was founded by Jean Vilar in 1947.
Jean Vilar was invited to present his first great successful play - Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot in the Popes Palace. At the same moment and at the same place, an exhibition of contemporary paintings and sculptures was organised by Christian Zervos, an art critic and collector, and by René Char, the poet.
Vilar initially refused the invitation as for him the Cour d'Honneur of the Popes Palace was too vast and "shapeless" and he also lost the performance rights of the play.
However, he proposed three creations : Shakespeare's Richard II, one of the Bard's plays that was little known at the time in France; Paul Claudel's Tobie et Sara (Tobie and Sara), and Maurice Clavel's second play, La Terrasse de Midi (The Midday Terrace). The very first Festival d'Avignon in September 1947 set the scene as a showcase for unknown work and modern scripts.
There are four distinct stages in the evolution of the Festival d'Avignon.
When I was pregnant with Colette, I refused to have my picture taken. I had gone through a period of time when I weighed more than I have ever weighed before, and I had pictures buried somewhere that were evidence of that fact. It took about a year for me to lose the weight, but the memory always stuck with me. I did not gain a lot of weight with Colette, but I gained enough that I was within the realm of too much for my own comfort. This pregnancy, I've gained even more, and I very often feel like I've let myself go or like I'm never going to be able to lose it again. But this pregnancy has been different from my pregnancy with Colette in many other ways than the physical components of it. I have been happier. More confident. More eager to greet the little person I could hardly fathom the existence of when I was pregnant with Colette. This pregnancy feels more real, more certain. And there are some parts of that experience that scare me. But not near as much as with Colette. Because this time, we have 6 years of experience that tell us we can be parents. 6 years to demonstrate that we actually LIKE being parents. Maybe not enough to have 3 or 4 or 5 kids. But enough to have another. And so, I allowed Eric to take some pictures of me to "document" the occasion. Yes, this pregnancy did actually happen. And that's okay because we can actually do this.

20-month milestones: Pretty much refuses to crawl up or down the stairs anymore if we're around - he likes us to hold his hand so he can use the steps. Knows how to open the iPhone and find the "Monster at the End of This Book" book and start playing it himself. Loves Yo Gabba Gabba and can't say it yet, but signs for it by holding his arms out and moving them up and down like DJ Lance does at the beginning of each episode. Seems to know what he wants and doesn't want to eat, without trying it. He mysteriously knew he wanted a bite of brownie without ever seeing/tasting one before. :) Loves the moon and the stars! Requests to see the moon when we go outside. Likes to make "funny faces" after bathtime while he's getting dried off. Loves to have his head scratched and has recently started requesting it at bedtime by asking "head?" and pointing to the top of his head. Favorite color to say is "yellow" - every color is yellow right now!
