Day 4 of the present round of protests (I missed Day 3, during which 2 citizens were arrested - 4 total so far - after refusing to leave because once again, after weeks of trying to get him to do so, Congressman Rick Larsen (D - WA), refused to respond with a simple telephone call).
We are in the Bellingham office of United States Congressman Rick Larsen. He is not present. His aide today, seated behind the desk, is Mr. Tripp Williams, a young man who appears to be quite moved by what transpired. The protesters are reading the names, ranks, ages, location of death, dates of death, home towns & a few sentences describing what is known about the circumstances of death of United States soldiers in Iraq. Where available, portraits of the soldiers are printed on the sheets everyone is holding. Mention is being made of some deaths among U.S. contractors in Iraq, & of the deaths of Iraqi citizens. Six or more of the women in the office are also talking about their children who are presently serving in Iraq, or who have recently returned from serving there. Several of the people in the room have strong, long-term ties to soldiers who have been killed in Iraq. One woman is talking about a young soldier who, after returning, descended into depression & disorder & one evening said, "I am a murderer," & committed suicide the next day (No, he is not counted among the war dead). As the photographs show, there were ample tears - but not ample enough to get a response from the congressman.
Everyone stays in the office past closing time, till the police arrive. However, all leave peacefully with the officers, so no arrests are made. I must add that once again the Bellingham city police are decent, courteous &, as always, meticulously respectful.
Power to the people. Now is the time.
QUESTIONS REPEATEDLY PRESENTED TO REP. RICK LARSEN
1. What are the specific reasons that you did not sign the declaration of peace (See # 4 below)?
2. Are you supporting HR197 (no permanent military presence in Iraq)?
3. What is your definition of 'permanent,' as in permanent military bases in Iraq?
4. What are the specific reasons that you will not support the three resolutions on the Declaration of Peace (HR4232: Timetable for withdrawal; H.Con.Res.348: Expresses the sense of Congress with respect to accomplishing the mission in Iraq; H.Con.Res.197: No permanent bases & shift from funding war to meeting human needs)?
5. Why do you keep funding the occupation of Iraq?
6. Have you voted 'No' on any military appropriation bill since 2001?
7. Will you support impeachment pf President Bush? If not, why?
8. Will you support a preemptive attack on Iran?
9. You often refer to the military objectives of the Iraq War. What, exactly, ARE those objectives?

Aside from manual loading it could be equipped with four types of lifters.

We refused to leave the street and go home until our demand of capital punishment for war criminals are met. Took this photograph on yesterday evening, February 06, 2013, when thousands joined at Shahbag intersection in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It turned into a spontaneous mass protest with thousands of people continuing their sit-in programme to demand capital punishment for Jamaat-e-Islami politician Abdul Quader Molla and other war criminals. University teachers and students, journalists, cultural and political activists, particularly the young generation, gathered at the intersection. We claimed capital punishment for Abdul Quader Molla for he has been found guilty of five out of six charges, including a series of killings including some large-scale massacres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. The given verdict has humiliated the whole nation and disappointed people seeking justice for the mass murder and rape by the collaborators, and also belittled the sacrifices of freedom fighters and intellectuals. The fiery protest is now spread throughout the nation, thousands of people in different districts are on streets demanding justice for war crime.

If it's Thursday morning, it must be rubbish day! The recycyling had already been collected, but I just managed to catch the waste lorry as it was setting off after empyting our wheelie bins.

Carlow County Council refuses to fill in the potholes on our class three road. They have told us that the only way they can be fixed is if we do it ourselves - and they will charge us for the materials with which we can do it. If this is not discrimination, then I don't know what is.

Named after the fact that a surveyor's burro refused to drink the heavily saline spring water, Badwater is the namesake of the lowest location in North America. Despite its high salt content, the spring is interestingly home to a threatened species of snail, the Badwater Snail, that submerges in the shallow pool. Below Badwater is one of the largest aquifers on Earth, a legacy of ancient Lake Manly. In 2004, after extreme rainfall, Lake Manly reappeared in the form of "Lake Badwater" a massive pool covering 260 km^2 of Death Valley under a few dozen cm of water, allowing visitors and rangers to canoe the length of the valley. It evaporated after a few weeks.

AIDS no longer has to be a death sentence, medical treatments for those living with HIV exists - but it's only available to a fraction of the 33 million people afflicted with the disease. One of the people trying to change that is Dr. Julio Montaner. Born and raised in Argentina, Julio came to Canada fresh out of med school. He's recognized as one of the most important HIV/AIDS researchers in the world. Montaner is fighting the disease on two fronts. First, Montaner has pioneered a triple drug therapy known as HAART, it's considered the Gold Standard treatment for HIV today. His second battle is red tape. When the Canadian Government refused to allow HAART therapy in Canada, he called them out on it - right in the middle of the 2006 federal election campaign. HAART is now available in Canada and as the newly elected president of the International AIDS Society, Montaner says he'll start calling out governments all over the world who aren't stepping up the fight against AIDS.

Oslo resiste, o almeno ci prova,

Festive carolers gathered in front of the Apple store in downtown Boston to demand that Congress make Apple Inc. pay its fair share of taxes along with other multi-billion companies like Bank of America, GE, Verizon and Citgroup. Speakers at the rally organized by The Budget for All Coalition cited across-the -board sequester cuts that have hurt families, children and seniors who are facing housing cuts, loss of Food Stamps and unemployment while congress refuses to close $90 billion in offshore corporate loopholes.
