When I was pregnant with Colette, I refused to have my picture taken. I had gone through a period of time when I weighed more than I have ever weighed before, and I had pictures buried somewhere that were evidence of that fact. It took about a year for me to lose the weight, but the memory always stuck with me. I did not gain a lot of weight with Colette, but I gained enough that I was within the realm of too much for my own comfort. This pregnancy, I've gained even more, and I very often feel like I've let myself go or like I'm never going to be able to lose it again. But this pregnancy has been different from my pregnancy with Colette in many other ways than the physical components of it. I have been happier. More confident. More eager to greet the little person I could hardly fathom the existence of when I was pregnant with Colette. This pregnancy feels more real, more certain. And there are some parts of that experience that scare me. But not near as much as with Colette. Because this time, we have 6 years of experience that tell us we can be parents. 6 years to demonstrate that we actually LIKE being parents. Maybe not enough to have 3 or 4 or 5 kids. But enough to have another. And so, I allowed Eric to take some pictures of me to "document" the occasion. Yes, this pregnancy did actually happen. And that's okay because we can actually do this.
The Festival d'Avignon was founded by Jean Vilar in 1947.
Jean Vilar was invited to present his first great successful play - Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot in the Popes Palace. At the same moment and at the same place, an exhibition of contemporary paintings and sculptures was organised by Christian Zervos, an art critic and collector, and by René Char, the poet.
Vilar initially refused the invitation as for him the Cour d'Honneur of the Popes Palace was too vast and "shapeless" and he also lost the performance rights of the play.
However, he proposed three creations : Shakespeare's Richard II, one of the Bard's plays that was little known at the time in France; Paul Claudel's Tobie et Sara (Tobie and Sara), and Maurice Clavel's second play, La Terrasse de Midi (The Midday Terrace). The very first Festival d'Avignon in September 1947 set the scene as a showcase for unknown work and modern scripts.
There are four distinct stages in the evolution of the Festival d'Avignon.
Evidently the owner refused to sell, putting a wrench into the machinations to make this area a bus loop after the Cassiar Connector was built. To the right you can see a tunnel where the city has allowed (even encouraged) graffiti artists to write.
In good times and not so good times, mom never stops cooking. We keep insisting on eating out to avoid prepping, cooking and cleaning up during these days when our family is so busy and under so much stress but she refuses. She says she loves to cook and loves to cook and bake for us even more. She has so far baked pineapple upside down cake, cherry cheesecake and guava cake. She also made us fresh squeezed orange juice and the tamarind juice on the photo, both made with fruit purchased from a road stand (more the back of a truck) in my father's town of Añasco. Yesterday's dinner was mostly hyperlocal. The arroz con gandules (stewed rice with pigeon peas) was made with pigeon peas from the garden. The "guineitos en escabeche" (green banana escabeche) was made with green bananas grown also by dad in the garden. The chicken with onions and broccoli was delicious too. @Atf_guy, mom and I ate this together at the table, as my mom, dad, sis and I always did when we lived at home. Gardening, edible gardening, food shopping, cooking and eating together at the table as a family has been a constant in our lives. My mom is amazing. Truly.
YUM!
I started eating Godfather's Pizza in the 1970's...from college through the early years at the TV station, the Combo was our staple. I even had my first introduction to my wife at a Godfather's in Lexington.
Now Godfather's is gone from many places (including Lexington)...but it's still going strong in Iowa! So, everytime I come to Iowa for an IndyCar race, a call to Godfather's is a must.
The Classic Combo with Original Crust is pizza heaven.
The recalcitrant, uncooperative, non-functional, Nutcracker refuses to dance! If this keeps up, it can be used as a doorstop!!!

The original T-series Pakamatic Refuse Collection Vehicle was manufactured by Shelvoke & Drewry Ltd. of Letchworth in 1972. It was first owned by Oldham Borough Council then after 16 years with Oldham Council it was bought by a Brighouse man for £400. It was eventually found in a breaker’s yard in Denholme and was bought in 1997 by Bradford City Council to be used in a restoration training exercise. A team of Keighley workers, led by fitter Allen Freer, rebuilt the vehicle between 1997 and 1998. They sourced original parts from as far afield as Belfast and spent 2,100 hours completing the project. It was repainted in the livery of the old Keighley Corporation. Many of these pictures were taken during that restoration exercise. The vehicle made appearances at many transport festivals. It was used for filming in a series of “Heartbeat” for the episode “Bin man”, filmed on location in Goathland and first broadcast in June 2005. In 2014 the vehicle was donated to the Keighley Bus Museum Trust by Bradford City Council.

You can see Wendy in the background, who had refused to show herself smoking (even though she actually was) when she was posing for the picture shown here on the calendar Gina and Beth are looking at. Wendy was given her own copy of the calendar this year.
The plastic sheets in a storm somehow reflects the determination of the people in the Mumbai slums, evicted by the might of the state, for making the city world class. Few days after the evictions, they returned to the land, refusing to give up and rebuilt their houses. Making housing affordable for the poor has been the promise of all successive governments. But once it power they made the city affordable for the rich.
