Blast: I checked that it was Metro, but not which date. Would have been interesting to know how long it had been there.
Of course I went back: Date = August 8, so the bundle of freesheets had been lying there for three weeks in rain and shine.
Telephone workers mill outside Turner’s Arena on 14th Street NW April 9, 1952 prior to a meeting called to vote on whether to honor the picket lines of striking Western Electric workers.
The strike began April 7th but picketing had been confined to Western Electric facilities until nationwide meetings of all telephone workers were held at noon April 9th.
Locally about 3,500 telephone workers—mostly operators—jammed Turner’s Arena where they voted overwhelmingly to support the Western Electric workers. A similar meeting of 400 Maryland workers took place at the Flower Theater in Takoma Park, Md.
Both Western Electric--which manufactured and installed telephone equipment--and C&P--which provided the telephone service--were subsidiaries of the Bell System owned by American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T).
At the Turner’s Arena rally, the mostly female attendees broke out into chants of “We want Maggie”—referring to their president Margaret Ross, president of the operators’ CWA Local 2300.
Glen Watts, president of CWA District 2 covering Maryland, D.C. and Virginia and future CWA president, also spoke to the crowd.
C&P Telephone vehemently denounced the union meetings called by CWA. J. R. B. Crigler, vice president and general manager of the company said:
“Notwithstanding the fact that no dispute of any kind exists between the company and union concerning wages and working conditions, CWA-CIO leaders pulled members off their jobs in complete disregard of our employees’ responsibilities to maintain efficient, dependable telephone services.
“The company strongly condemns such action. Leaving a post of public duty at the whim of union leaders is a serious matter and in this case a violation of the Taft-Hartley Act.”
The Western Electric workers would stage roving pickets of CWA facilities over the next two-and-a-half weeks, sporadically disrupting telephone service in the process as most operators refused to cross lines. Often the disruptions were for one-two hours and then pickets would be withdrawn.
Long distance and information service was most affected as direct dial service predominated in Washington, D.C. by that point in time.
The company and the union settled the strike April 25th with the workers winning significant pay and benefit improvements.

okay, so the lameness of this photo is NOT my fault this week. it's been a busy week -- 4 shoots in 6 days -- and when i suddenly realized it was Sunday, i tried to get matea off the studio couch to go upstairs for a photo ... but she refused.
she had a big day today with a group pack walk this morning in the rain ... and without a handy camera, i don't get many photos of my guys out and about.
i can't wait until this crazy fall schedule is over!

Thermometer refused to rise above freezing today. Considering we're halfway thorugh December and that's the first time this winter, we're doing not too bad.

On February 13, the campaign group We Stand With Shaker invited the media to the US Embassy to mark the 13th anniversary of the arrival at Guantanamo of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in the prison, on February 14, 2002. We Stand With Shaker was formed in November 2014 to demand the release from Guantanamo of Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in the prison, who is still held despite being approved for release twice, in 2007 and 2009.
In the run-up to the anniversary, supporters of We Stand With Shaker were encouraged to send copies of a Valentine's Day card for Shaker to the US Ambassador, Matthew W. Barzun, asking him to ask President Obama to secure Shaker's release, and on February 13 MPs and other celebrity supporters of the campaign intended to hand in a giant version of the card to the Ambassador, signed by over 60 MPs and celebrities, but the Ambassador refused to accept it. We Stand With Shaker decided to turn up anyway, to make a point about the Ambassador snubbing the MPs, and music legend Roger Waters (ex-Pink Floyd) came along to provide support.
In this photo, the campaign's directors (Andy Worthington and Joanne MacInnes) and Shaykh Suliman Ghani, a teacher and broadcaster and a friend of Shaker's family, stand with the Valentine's Day card outside the Embassy, having tried - and failed - one final time to persuade the Ambassador to take the card.

The 3rd Donadea 50KM Ultra Marathon and Irish 50KM Championships were held at Donadea Forest Park, Donadea, Naas, Co. Kildare, Ireland on Saturday, 16th February 2013 at 10:00. The race is an International Association of Ultrarunners Bronze Label Event. The course is ten loops of the outer loop of the beautiful Coilte managed Donadea Forest Park. Overall this was a fantastic event. There were 107 participants on the start list including 8 runners who have started all of the three Donadea 50KMs held so far. Several runners from the nearby club Donadea Running Club took part. The race was organised by race director Anthony Lee who must be commended on doing a wonderful, professional job on organising this race to the very highest standards. The recent forest thinning works that have been carried out created a little muddy stretch near the hills on the back part of the loop but otherwise the loop (see garmin trace below) is a forest path in very good conditions. The high standard of organisation, the great camaraderie and atmosphere amongst the runners will see this become one of the must-do ultra marathon events in Ireland in years to come. The race was won by Barry Minnock in 3-05 (new course record) and the ladies race was won by Crusaders' Olywn Dunne in 4:01

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

clownmayor is no more. i made a lawn sign as well, but it needs improvement so i'll rework it in the next couple of days. other signs were made and a few went up, but without me photographing them yet.
i made the base poster over a year ago, and had some leftovers to which i added the red FORMER when i got home tonight after a long day of celebrating the incompetent, loudmouth bigot's removal from office. this has been a long, difficult couple of years for people in this city, progressive or not. the misery exuded by this absurd fool, and his reactionary, bullying behaviour are an embarrassment, and have been glaring, graphic proof of something we all feared years ago: amalgamation was a huge mistake. this criminal, bigoted baby, with a huge sense of entitlement was obviously a terrible choice for mayor, and all the proof we needed of that was evident for anyone who looked into his past. he's never had a job his father didn't get for him, and he has long believed that the laws of the country do not apply to him and his cronies. his verbal and physical abuse of others is a matter of record, as is his racism and homophobia. that 350 000 people voted for this idiot is dsgusting, and it is clear that he and many of his supporters refuse to admit the truth and instead are betting even more heavily on the divisive and punishing tactics of the extreme right-wing. these people are not conservatives, they are hateful idologues, pushing a far-right agenda so that the less extreme rightist garbage they could not pass otherwise gets viewed as more moderate and palatable. when ford started trolling for mayor, i believed that he was a trial balloon being floated by the federal and provincial conservative parties to see just how much bullshit the voters of ontario and the gta would tolerate, and i still think that is true. today the odious stephen harper and tim hudak placed a new pin on their graphs, and that's the only notice they took of the city, having made it abundantly clear years ago that they hate toronto and any sort of progressiveness. guess what, guys? we hate you, too, and you will never have much success here, as your vile pig proved.
rob ford is the first mayor in the history of the city to be removed from office. that ignominy fits him like the cheap suits and drunken scowl he wears so often. since amalgamation we've had two terrible mayors (fraud and mel lastman), both ridiculous clowns, and one decent public servant, david miller. pre-amalgamation, barbara hall and june rowlands, and then we run into the dark time of art eggleton. still, eggleton and lastman at least pretended to take the job seriously much of the time, and seemed to respect the responsibilities accompanying the office, no matter how much fault we found with them. no-one can say the same for the former mayor ford, at least without being, transparently, a liar. further back, people of all political sides fondly remember david crombie, who, while very much a conservative, still showed respect for social justice much of the time and did not make a habit of alienating non-allies. sadly, his form of conservatism is no more.
a final question: since city hall is located west of yonge street, will the new private garbage trucks be the ones used to haul ford's diseased carcass from office, or will he be ground into a paste that can be fed to bloat teenaged sports teams?
