This is a photograph from the fourth annual running of the 'Streets of Athboy' 5KM Road Race and Fun Run which was held in the town of Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland on Friday 11th August 2017 at 20:00. Tonight's event follows on from the very successful previous three runnings of the event. The race event was organised very successfully again by Mick Priest and his team of volunteers and helpers from the local athletics club Father Murphy AC and the local community. The Fr. Murphy club is based in rural meath between the towns of Ballivor and Athboy. A credit to their establishment the club boasts facilities on 17 acres including a grass 400m and 1KM all weather walking track.
The race itself starts on the Navan road approximately 1KM from the Registration Hall. The race follows a route away along the main street of Athboy and then turns left at the Cosy Pub onto the Kildalkey Road. This brings participants through a series of bends before a long straight stretch leading to a country laneway where there is a short loop before return back onto the Kildalkey road. This returns back on the route that the race started on. The race finished in the grounds of Athboy Community Centre. It is a good fair course and many participants felt it offered the opportunity for fast running. Overall the race, as part of the Meath AAI series of races, continued and maintained the high standard of road race organisation in County Meath by Meath running and athletic clubs. The Fr. Murphy Athletic Club also organise a very successful 10KM Road Race and Fun Run which is held during Easter on an annual basis and is also part of the Meath AAI calendar of races. However the 10KM does not actually take place in Athboy but rather the nearby village and townlands of Kildalkey.
The very rainy weather of recent days cleared off and the race was held in good weather conditions for running. However the greatest challenge during the second week of August is the fading evening summer light as the dusk begins to creep in a little earlier each evening.
Refreshments were provided afterwards in St. James' Hall in the town where the race headquarters and registration took place. Athboy is located west of Navan on the N51 between Navan and Delvin. Athboy is also very close to the Westmeath border which is only a few miles away to the west of the town.

The explaination is very simple.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. We refused to leave the street and go home until our demand of capital punishment for war criminals are met. Took this photograph on yesterday evening, February 06, 2013, when thousands joined at Shahbag intersection in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It turned into a spontaneous mass protest with thousands of people continuing their sit-in programme to demand capital punishment for Jamaat-e-Islami politician Abdul Quader Molla and other war criminals. University teachers and students, journalists, cultural and political activists, particularly the young generation, gathered at the intersection. We claimed capital punishment for Abdul Quader Molla for he has been found guilty of five out of six charges, including a series of killings including some large-scale massacres in the Mirpur area of Dhaka during the country’s Liberation War in 1971. The given verdict has humiliated the whole nation and disappointed people seeking justice for the mass murder and rape by the collaborators, and also belittled the sacrifices of freedom fighters and intellectuals. The fiery protest is now spread throughout the nation, thousands of people in different districts are on streets demanding justice for war crime.

I don't understand why businesses allow customers who make a scene to remain on the premises. The woman at the counter was cursing the employees and basically shoved another customer out of her way. This is for cookies. It seems that it would be more wise to have that customer leave than to have other customers (like me) be annoyed or even scared by one bulldog that wants only to fight.

It still runs! =) And in the refuse industry, that's not an easy feat for an almost 15 year old truck.

The lettering may not be correct and the registration number is not genuine but I have memories from 50 years ago of these Karrier Bantams turning up at my school with the gardening team and its lawn mowers. This was precisely the role in which the Karrier Bantam excelled - low cost, undemanding local transport. Local authorities used them in a variety of roles, including refuse collection and gulley emptying; and British Rail used them as tractor units for collection and delivery work (09-Nov-25).

Refuse lorry drivers spend almost as much of their day driving in reverse. A lot of the reverse manoevres are into tight positions such as this. This was the tightest of the day today.
When the hedges (seen on the left - totally restricting the view and bending the mirror into positions that a contortionist would be proud of) get too overgrown then the track becomes un-passable.
Regardless of this, the phone in the office starts to ring as the residents complain that the lazy binmen didn't call to empty the bins again!!!
My wife Luz called me and said: "look how prettyly these go together!" And yes, this combination of old tealeaves, lettuce, tomato, coffee filter, (end-)pieces of zucchini and mushroom, egg shell and banana peel does make a pretty ensemble, I think!

This is a RTi chassis, it's basically an International or Navistar truck with a different cab. You can see everything around the cab with all the glass.

This image is based on a Dodge G1175 gulley-emptier photographed in a derelict condition in deep grass at Mgarr in 2003. The rear body of that truck has been combined with a copy of the chassis and cab from the refuse truck on the right, which have been recoloured and distressed to match. This is the only vehicle of this type that I recall seeing in Malta, although there were others that may have fulfilled the same purpose without the prominent arm for the suction pipe (18-Jan-26).
