Refraction

#Crazy Tuesday

The sun reflected from a new tower. Canary Wharf, London.

Shot for Macro Mondays Theme "Crystal."

Refracted light from my iPad display (+ other light sources) in fake ice cubes and tinted water.

I'm not sure how I feel about this shot-- it reminds me of back in college when studying abstract art, there was a running one liner joke/question-- "Yeah, but what's it a picture of?"

Leftover soap bubbles shot..

Soulis: Refraction on Cassias.

I was aiming to get refraction through a glass of water, as seen in this month's PhotoPlus magazine, but for some reason the water didn't refract the colours as I had expected. The stem of the glass did though, so that's what I went with.

There's a lot I'm not happy with in this picture, especially the light, but I guess I can see it as a starting point for learning more about how to control light, especially around glass. As I try different ideas for this project, it's becoming more obvious that I need to invest some money in some proper off-camera lighting. If anyone has any recommendations for the type/brand of equipment I could get for a very basic set up on a limited budget, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

Koi Fish/Water Distortion

Retractions of the passion flower. Used a hair clip in this image rather than the vines themselves. View in light box is best!

From my previous house I used to get this glimpse of the the dawn sky, and tried to guess when it was worth going out for a full view, or even driving to the Reservoirs. On this day, I guessed nothing dramatic was going to happen, so when the sky turned a fiery red, it was too late, and I had to make do with the glimpse below.

I also took the refraction in glass through a window..

It took me over a week to get over the disappointment of missing the full sunrise to be able to share the fantastic colours,

No graphic invites NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Revisiting the refraction exercise. This is my second attempt at this photography and this time used red striped wrapping paper as the background but then blended different hues in Photoshop.

My previous attempt is here

so please have a look and compare. Thanks for looking anyway!

I used a speedlight flash positioned behind and above the glasses and fired remotely through a diffuser umbrella. This time trying not to get the reflections as I had before.
