Hearst Castle is the only place I can think of that a pool this ornate can fit in. The walls, floors and ceilings are covered with tile mosaics. Since the pool is indoor it's shielded from the wind, so the water sits perfectly still and offers crystal clear reflections.

I'm in DC for a conference, so I figured I'd try to get at least one night out to photograph, which I managed last night, with beautiful conditions.

Did I mention I love reflecting pools? Well I do and I love predawn photography as well.
I'm not Mormon but I have several close friends who are LDS and have been to and by the LDS Temple in Mesa Arizona several times and I've always wanted to photograph it just before sunrise.
I also wanted to do the west entrance as most people capture the north reflecting pool. For this my first attempt I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital camera and a Canon EF 17-40mm F/4L USM Zoom lens.
This is straight out of the camera no Photoshop converted RAW to JPEG using Canon Digital Photo Professional I played with the white balance to get the unique look.

This is the Reflecting Pool at the Oklahoma City Memorial, where 168 people lost their lives on April 19, 1995. May we always remember. May we have clear sight. May we learn how to love God and our neighbors daily.

I've one more from this cycle, but too tired now to process it - nighty night.
Los Angeles had some light clouds that Saturday ahead of their big rain on Tuesday. Made for some nice color at sunset.

Just a few sleepy tour groups wandering around at this point. Still so pretty and peaceful. The mist was lovely.
On April 24th I learned of a dear friend's death after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. I had known the end was near, but when her daughter texted me an hour after her passing, my anguish overflowed. I knew she had made arrangements at the mausoleum in the cemetery I frequent nearby. I didn't know the exact location of her spot, but had seen a photo of it and felt compelled to go find it for myself. This mallard drake sitting in the shallow reflecting pool watched me as I searched for and eventually found Peggy's spot, which did not yet have the second year after her name. After I had said my final goodbyes to my friend I took some photos and video of this observant duck, positioning him in the reflected chapel doorway. Wait for his quack midway through the clip. I love how the sun peeking through the clouds transforms the light. Peggy, this is for you.
Possibly the first image I made of the St. Johns Bridge with my Innova pinhole camera. This particular evening found me under the bridge leading a photo workshop for Newspace. We had had a couple of decent sunsets that week, but the one we got under the bridge that evening was quite stunning. I managed to sneak in a quick pinhole image toward the end of it.
I particularly like the diverging/converging vertical thing I got going on here with the bridge and its reflection.

Luray Caverns, originally called Luray Cave, is a cave just west of Luray, Virginia, United States, which has drawn many visitors since its discovery in 1878. The cavern system is generously adorned with speleothems such as columns, mud flows, stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone, and mirrored pools. The caverns are perhaps best known for the Great Stalacpipe Organ, a lithophone made from solenoid-fired strikers that tap stalactites of various sizes to produce tones similar to those of xylophones, tuning forks, or bells. ~ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luray_Caverns

"Thrasher and Dove Reflections 2" by Patti Deters. Two different species of birds enjoy some water at a reflecting pool near Tucson, Arizona. The Curve-billed Thrasher (Toxostoma curvirostre) is watches as the White winged Dove (Zenaida Asiatica) arrives for a drink and then perhaps a quick bath. The thrasher, also known as the Huitlacoche bird is considered a pollinator and is highly regarded by birders and ecologists. The dove, on the other hand, is much more common and less revered, though it is still a beautiful bird especially when see with wings out as in flight. The still water create lovely reflections of these two different birds. This photo is a part of my Washington, DC (USA) Monuments & Milky Way collection from my early November 2016 photography project.
This was take from the north side of the Lincoln Monument. This is where one would see the Milky Way in March to April in the very early hours before sunrise if Washington, DC did not have the light pollution it has.
With a special photography project in mind, I took off from my house in Virginia this past early November and went into Washington, DC for 4 evenings to photography all the main monuments, including the White House and US Capital and two other special sites from from sunset on. This included the day before, during and two days after the super moon.
At each site, I used my special app on my iPhone to accurately determine where the Milky Way was over each monument for March and early October and I took photos of each site from two angles based on the app which is pretty accurate for depicting the Milky Way's position in the night sky for any day you dial in.
