LINCO was a brand of gasoline that was sold by the Lincoln Oil Refining Compnay. In 1924, the Ohio Oil Company, founded in 1887, purchased the Lincoln Oil Refining Company and its LINCO gas stations, most located around the Terre Haute area of Indiana and Illinois. The Ohio Oil Company expanded the LINCO brand into Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. In 1930, the Ohio Oil Company purchased the Marathon brand. After World War II, the Marathon brand replaced LINCO. In 1962, the Ohio Oil Company changed its name to Marathon Oil Company.

The rally took place outside Chicago's City Hall. Groups participating were : National Nurses United, Progressive Democrats of America-Chicago, Southeast Side Coalition to Ban Petcoke, Southeast Environmental Task Force, Alliance for Community Services.
Petcoke is the end product of the refining of tar sands oil, which is the dirtiest, most environmentally dangerous extractive fuel. The fuel is refined at the BP facility in Whiting, Indiana, then shipped across state lines to sit on barges in the Calumet River on the far southeast side of Chicago.
Piles of petcoke 5-6 stories high and up to a quarter of a mile long are stored within a block or two of Chicago neighborhoods. This area of the city is mostly a low-income, minority area. Apparently, business feels that it can use such areas as dumping grounds because the residents don't have the means to fight back. It's a common story all across the country. The city of Detroit also has the same ongoing issue with petcoke piles on the Detroit river.
Petcoke is a black, powdery substance that blows through the air quite freely. It easily infiltrates homes forcing owner's to have to wipe down their furniture and work extra hard to keep their food clean every day.
Worse, inhaling petcoke is bad for the lungs and heart. It causes asthma and other respiratory and pulmonary illnesses.
So why do city officials allow this to continue? They are elected to respond to the needs and concerns of all the citizens, not just those with tons of money, say, like the Koch Brothers, who own one of the terminals where the petcoke is stored. Of course, in these days of oligarchic rule, the desires of people who are worth $100 billion dollars counts more than the health and welfare of ordinary citizens.
Time for a moratorium on storing petcoke on the Calumet River. It's everyone's concern: this stuff blows all over the city. We all need to stand up for each other.

Gulf Refining #5, a Prairie type (2-6-2) locomotive, was built in 1912 as wood burning #101 for the Industrial Lumber Co., in Elizabeth, LA, by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA. In 1940 and #101 was sold to the Gulf Refining Co., in Beaumont, TX. After passing through several different owners, it is now on display at the entrance to the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City, KS, smothered in strings of fairy lights!

Emergency managers play a critical role in distributing NOAA National Weather Service warnings to people using a variety of methods, such as activating sirens, notifying schools, hospitals and other critical services, activating an emergency alert system, cable television interrupt, or a reverse emergency call-out system. Emergency managers play an integral role in the testing, evaluation, and feedback during the development of probabilistic hazard information within the NOAA Hazardous Weather Testbed. They provide feedback on their interpretation of experimental probabilistic forecasts generated in the HWT from the PHI Experiment and the Experimental Forecast Program. This feedback is used in conjunction with feedback from forecasters and broadcast meteorologists to refine how the uncertainty information is generated and disseminated.

It was a science bonus on Monday at the Virginia Tech (VT) Seafood Agriculture Research and Extension Center in Hampton. Extra fish that had been hatched and raised over the last year for research were tagged and released by VT and Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) staff. Originally hatched to help scientists refine the larvae production process and determine baseline nutrition requirements, as tagged fish they will have one last opportunity to contribute to science as they live out their lives in the wild.

OHIO-COLORADO SMELTING & REFINING CO. SMOKESTACK / SMELTERTOWN - 1401 J St.

Completed in 1917, the brick and tile smokestack reaches a height of 365 feet. Its concrete foundation extends 30 feet into the ground. The structure was built to replace two shorter smokestacks at the Ohio-Colorado Smelting and Refining Company's smelter facility located one mile west of Salida. Although the facility closed in 1920, the smokestack remains as a highly visible monument to the mining industry and its workers.
Note the clear yellow gold chloride solution in the filtering flask, compared to the cloudy (dirty) solution in the beaker. This cloudy stuff is being filtered in the Buchner funnel attached to the flask.

I am used to overseas travelling in autumn and winter so it is a novel concept to think of cool outfits. I love wearing dresses on hot days- but they have to pass the hand wash in the basin test!!!

This is a westbound Norfolk Southern Railway freight train in the late morning of 10 May 2016 at Horseshoe Curve, west of Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA. It was headed by two NS engines - # 9693, a General Electric CW40-9, and # 7211, a General Motors Electro-Motive Division SD80MAC.
These are Deep Rock Refining Company tank cars, marked DPRX. They were built in the 2010s and are used to transport petroleum (crude oil).
The nation’s third largest floor covering manufacturer announced changes in its management structure, effective immediately. These changes reflect Beaulieu’s continued plan to strengthen and grow its position in the market following its securing a $230 million loan refinance package in October of last year and a string of successes with major accounts and industry awards since Surfaces.
“We are definitely headed in the right direction,” said Ralph Boe, who maintains his leadership as CEO over the entire Beaulieu Group. “This new executive structure will allow us to better harness the very positive momentum we’ve begun over the last six months and be more laser focused on each division in the company.”
Reporting to Boe as part of the executive committee are Del Land and Peter Farley, who maintain their positions of CFO and Legal Counsel, respectively. New to the committee is Karel Vercruyssen as President/COO. “Karel comes to us from Beaulieu Canada where he grew that company extremely well as its CEO and president over the last five years,” said Boe. “He will also continue to have responsibility for the separately owned Beaulieu of Canada.”
Reporting to Vercruyssen are the following divisional operations: Commercial, led by newly appointed Nicolas Bouckaert as President; and two newly formed divisions led by vice-presidents: Phil Bates over Woven Fabrics and Hans Bakker over Specialty Fabrics. Vercruyssen will also act as president to the Residential division and handle its operations duties, while Boe will also be over the Residential Sales and Marketing departments in addition to his CEO responsibilities.
One of the topics we covered in class was refining exposure and how important it is to achieve the proper exposure. Here is an example out at Evergreen Lake yesterday afternoon where the scene was brighter than average. Once we get a test exposure we use the tools we have to evaluate it with the visual display on the LCD screen, the highlight warning display and the histogram. We can then choose to make an adjustment if needed. When you are shooting in Programed auto, Aperture priority or Shutter priority you can use exposure compensation to dial in "plus" compensation and make the image brighter. We could also switch to Manual shooting mode and increase the exposure with an adjustment to the shutter speed (slower), the aperture (wider), the ISO (higher) or a combination of all three. This is a lot of control and flexibility especially when you consider the amount of adjustment can be as little as 1/3 stop for each of the exposure components.
