Australasian Sugar Refining Company complex 1891, 1899 at conversion to apartments in the 1980s.
Designers: Hyndman and Bates.
.
`The site of the factory was included in Section 2B [of the original Port Melbourne survey], which was surveyed into four allotments early in the history of Sandridge. By November 1860 three of these had been purchased by A. Ross, joining William Jones, S.G. Henty and P. Lalor as owners of the section (2)..
.
In February 1890, the Melbourne Tram and Omnibus Company Limited, had stables, offices, land and an omnibus repository on the section.(3) [Most of the present buildings on the site date from 1891, when the Australasian Sugar Refining Company established a refinery.(4)] On the MMBW detail plan dated 1894, the section is labelled 'sugar works' and the configuration of buildings approximately conforms with the present layout. [The refinery was closed in 1894 following its purchase by the Colonial Sugar Refining Company as part of a move to strengthen its monopoly.].
.
[In 1899, Robert Harper and Company Pty Ltd converted the buildings to a starch factory, and various brick additions were constructed to designs by Hyndman and Bates, architects.(5)] When the sewerage was connected in 1899, a plan was drawn by the architects and this closely resembles the 1894 MMBW detail plan configuration. (6) .
.
The buildings .. form the major part of the original factory complex on the site, one of the largest nineteenth century industrial sites in Victoria. The complex as a whole is significant for its large size and range of building types. The dramatic massing and height of the 9 Beach Street buildings gives them additional importance as local landmarks as viewed both from the surrounding streets and the sea..
.
COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS.
The former Australasian Sugar Refining Company and Robert Harper starch factory complex can be compared with a number of other large nineteenth century industrial complexes in Melbourne. These include the former Yorkshire Brewery, Wellington Street, Collingwood (from 1876), the former Victoria Brewery, Victoria Parade, East Melbourne (established 1854), the former Kimpton's Flour Mill, Elizabeth Street, Kensington, the Thomas Brunt flour mill and Brockhoff and T.B. Guest biscuit factories complex, Laurens and Munster Streets, North Melbourne (from 1888-9) and the Joshua Bros (now CSR) sugar refinery, Whitehall Street, Yarraville (established 1873). All of these are representative of the development in Victoria of the manufacture of foodstuffs and related raw materials. Of these, the CSR refinery is the most directly comparable in terms of original function and the scale and massing of the buildings. Established significantly earlier than the Port Melbourne refinery, the site is larger and more intact..
.
In the local context, the only other surviving industrial site of comparable scale is the Swallow and Ariell Biscuit Factory complex (q.v.). This complex is of state significance, and is considerably earlier, with parts dating from the 1850s. The predominantly two- and three-storey buildings, however, are of a different type to the former refinery and starch factory buildings..

The Postcard
A postcard that was designed and printed in Great Britain, although they did not do a very good job - the wording at the bottom of the card is barely visible. It is in fact an embarrassingly bad poem:
"May all the passing hours be bright,
With hope and joy to cheer you,
May not a shadow come in sight,
And not a care be near you".
The name of the publisher is not recorded.
There are many postcards showing Dutch women and girls on this photostream, and they are almost invariably shown knitting.
Where boys are also present, they are usually shown wearing very baggy trousers and smoking a pipe, which would certainly not be allowed today.
The card was posted in New Malden on Wednesday the 14th. September 1921 to:
Mrs. Shrimpton,
'Killarney',
West Barnes Lane,
New Malden.
Local.
The brief message on the divided back of the card was as follows:
"With love and all
good wishes from
D."
Adolph Hitler
So what else happened on the day that the card was posted?
Well, on the 14th. September 1921, In Munich, Nazi Party leader Adolf Hitler and editor Hermann Esser disrupted a meeting of the Bavarian League, and got into a fight with Bavarian secessionist leader Otto Ballerstedt.
Hitler served one month in jail for assault. After becoming Fuehrer of Germany, Hitler arranged for Ballerstedt's assassination in 1934.
A Deadly Distillery Explosion
Also on that day, ten employees of the Atlantic Refining Company in Philadelphia were killed, and eight seriously injured, in the fiery explosion of a high-pressure naphtha distillery.
Another 20 employees were less seriously hurt by the blast, which had sent a spray of burning oil across the factory floor.

Emblazoned in the colors of our nation, a pair of XTO Energy oil wells pound away in the mid-day sun just north of Keene, ND. Delegated as "The Sweet Spot" during the oil boom, the area along the ND 23 corridor between Keene and Hawkeye North Dakota has, and continues to, produce some of the highest quality bakken sweet crude in the region. One of the highlights this oil brings is its high purity and need for little refining to achieve a finished product. This has left companies like Hess, XTO Energy, Oasis Petroleum, and Continental Resources to scatter wells sites and oil pads en-mass around this area. Despite the ongoing oil slowdown, production in this area remains high, with few well shutdowns.
This core sample was given to my grandmother by her brother, who was heading the American Refining Group operation in Pakistan when she went to visit him in 1952. Her brother had been with that operation from the 1940's until his death I believe. When I was a small child I would always play with this. Somehow I never lost it and have since ended up with it.
In Pakistan, the reservoir rocks for oil and gas and condensate are both, sandstone and carbonates, And their age range is from Cambrian clastics to Miocene clastics.
I will describe the reservoirs from oldest the youngest reservoirs.
The Potwar thrust belt has been known for oil production since 1915 when Khaur field was discovered in district Attock about 100 miles south of Rawalpindi.
The oldest reservoir for oil, gas and condensate is Khewra formation’s sandstone of Early Cambrian age in Adhi field near Gujar Khan district Rawalpindi in Potwar Basin. Missa Kiswal and Rajian field are also producing oil from Khewra sandstone; both located not far away from Adhi field.
The porous facies in Khewra is oil and gas bearing located in the Upper part of the Khewra and known as Upper Khewra whereas Lower part is non reservoir and composed of mainly shale.
Khewra SS is also known as Purple sandstone in older literature due to its prominent color in the exposed sections. The thickness is about 150 to 200m in the exposed sections.
There have been reported oil indications and shows in few other fields and wells from sandstone of Kussak Formation and carbonates of Juttana Formation but not in enough quantity to flow.
Early Permian Tobra Formation which is considered as clastics deposits from the glacier detritus have also been reservoir in Adhi field. I am not aware that if these rocks have been found oil bearing in any other field but it has potential to be reservoir rock due to its lithological characterization.
Late Permain carbonates of Wargal Formation is the reservoir in Dhurnal field. This reservoir is natural fractured. Dhurnal field is also located in Potwar Basin near Khaur field.
Jurassic reservoirs are composed of both, carbonates and sandstone. The first Jurassic reservoir in Pakistan was discovered in Dhulian oilfield when well 39 flowed oil from sandstone of Datta Formation (early Jurassic age). The discovery of Jurassics in Dhulian has been a significant milestone in the exploration history of Pakistan. Oil was also found in Datta Formation in Meyal field in 1970’s and in Toot field. (both in Potwar basin).
Middle Jurassic carbonates of Chiltan Formation have also been found gas bearing in Middle Indus basin but not too many fields with this reservoir.
Early Cretaceous sandstone of Goru Formation is widely explored and by far the one of the most successful reservoir in the Middle Indus, where it has gas, and in the Lower Indus Rift Basin where it mostly has oil. The reservoir part of the Goru Formation is known as Lower Goru Formation.
Lower Goru Formation is divided into three main zones, Upper sands, Middle Sands and Basal sands whereas in the Badin rift Basin, the Upper sands are further subdivided into A, B, C and D sands ( A is the youngest) Upper sands and Basal sands are oil bearing in more than 50 fields in the Badin area in the districts Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Badin and Sanghar in Sindh Province. (Khaskheli, matli, Tando Adam, Sono, Bobby, Ghotana, Golarchi, Turk, Laghari, Duphri, Kato, Lashari, Bhatti fields, etc)
Near Khairpur, Ghotki and Sukkur area in the Upper Sindh, Lower Goru Formation has gas in Miano, Kadanwari and Sawan fields.
The Upper Cretaceous Pab Formation sandstone is established reservoir in Dhodak field (Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab) Bhit field (Kirthar Range, District Dadu, Sindh) and Zamzama field (Dadu Sindh).
The Paleocene reservoirs in Potwar area are limestone of Lockhart Formation in Dhulian, Pindori, Ratana, Meyal and Dhurnal fields. The reservoirs are naturally fractured otherwise rock is very hard, dense and without primary porosity. Relatively minor volumes have been tested from Early Paleocene sandstone of Hangu Formation (Dhak pass Formation) in Pariwali field.
I can quickly estimate that about 40 to 50 percent of Potwar Basin Oil has been flowed from Paleocene carbonates from 1941 to date and the approximate produced volumes are near about 60 to 85 million barrels.
The sandstone of Ranikot Formation of Paleocene age is found to be gas reservoir in Dhodak (Kirthar range) and Sari-Hundi field in Kirthar range in the Dadu district.
Eocene age Sui main Limestone (SML) is the largest reservoir so far in Pakistan in Sui gas field which was discovered in 1952. This field has more than 10 TCF recoverable gas. The SML is the major reservoir many relatively smaller gas fields in the Sui area such as Zin and Uch fields, both in Mari Bugti High, in Balochistan province.
The carbonates of Chorgali-Sakesar Formation of Eocene age are the biggest reservoir in Potwar Basin. The major fields where Eocene fractured carbonates are reservoirs, Dhulian, Meyal, Pindori, Pariwali, Dhurnal, Dakhni, Balkassar, Chak naurang, Adhi, Bhangali and Fim Kasser.
The youngest reservoir in Pakistan is Miocene age sandstone of Murree Formation in Khaur field. Minor oil from Dhulian and Dhurnal have also been found.
So far no oil is reported to be found in any sequences younger than Miocene in Pakistan.
So far the SML is the largest gas bearing reservoir in the entire Pakistan followed by sandstone of Pab and Ranikot formations.
The largest volume of oil flowed from Lower Goru sandstone and Chorgali-Sakesar carbonates followed by Paloecene, Jurassic (sandstone) and Cambrian sandstone.
Today I focused on refining the panelling I glued up yesterday, machining a prototype drogue, and improving the form-tool for the RCS thrusters.
The angle on the drogue prototype is wrong, I need to do some more research to work out what angle it should be. I think I bored it out at 35°.
For the RCS thruster tools I ground a stub length drill with the appropriate angle which is dedicated to boring out the tiny thrusters. They're extremely fiddly to machine, as they tend to snap off the stock before I've reached the final dimension. I will obviously fine tune the process, as I need to be able to make hundreds...

The gasoline station was restored and is used as Visitor Center. The gas pumps are a Marathon (on right) and a LINCO (on left). LINCO was a brand of gasoline that was sold by the Lincoln Oil Refining Compnay. In 1924, the Ohio Oil Company, founded in 1887, purchased the Lincoln Oil Refining Company and its LINCO gas stations, most located around the Terre Haute area of Indiana and Illinois. The Ohio Oil Company expanded the LINCO brand into Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky. In 1930, the Ohio Oil Company purchased the Marathon brand. After World War II, the Marathon brand replaced LINCO. In 1962, the Ohio Oil Company changed its name to Marathon Oil Company.
Once at the mill, teams work to crush the cane stalks to extract sucrose, which is then refined to make table sugar, fuel ethanol or other products. In Brazil, the leftover biomass (known as bagasse) is burned in high-efficiency boilers to make the mill completely self-sufficient while generating surplus electricity that supplies about 5% of the country’s growing energy needs. As mechanical harvesting increases, more biomass will be available for electricity generation and to produce cellulosic biofuels.

This three masted schooner was originally named ‘Jessica’, owned by an Argentine, and rigged with square sails on her foremast. She had a significantly shorter length overall in comparison to her 212′(65m) now.
In the mid-late 1980’s she was bought by Alan Bond who used her as a promotional tool and who crudely named the yacht after his beer, ‘XXXX’.
Around 1989 XXXX was bought by a Spanish family, who employed Paul Goss as the Captain who undertook a massive project in refining her looks. He worked with the expertise of the naval architect Gerard Dijkstra. The subsequent refit included cutting the hull in half and adding a section, creating a different underwater configuration and lengthening her spas.
Since then ‘Adix’ has been around the world a number of times turning heads wherever she sails. She attended the Fife Regatta on the Clyde in 2003 and 2008 with her ‘tender’, ‘The Lady Anne‘. She has been based out of Valencia since the 2007 America’s Cup event and has carried out extensive refits at Pendennis Shipyard in 2001 and 2009.

Delta is a city in Millard County, Utah, United States. The population was 3,436 at the 2010 census. The Sevier River flows near Delta. The Sevier River is generally used by irrigation before it reaches its eventual end, the dry Sevier Lake. One of the main sources of income for Delta is a power plant called operated by the Intermountain Power Agency and known as the Intermountain Power Project or I.P.P. It is also referred to as Intermountain Power Service Corporation or I.P.S.C. This coal-powered power plant supplies power for much of Los Angeles county in California. The plant was originally designed for 4 units, but only 2 have been built. Each unit produces 900 megawatts of electricity.
Brush Wellman is a mine and refining plant located at one of the few sources of concentrated beryllium in the world. The plant is a mill and finishing facility for beryllium, a high-strength, lightweight metal used in military, aerospace, and medical industries. The ore for the plant comes from Brush Wellman's mine, located in the Topaz-Spor Mountains, 50 miles west, which is North America's only developed source for the metal. The facility is located here due to the remoteness of the area, as beryllium dust is highly toxic, and the proximity of a large source of power: the Intermountain Power Project.
Graymont Lime has a plant in the Cricket Mountains, about 32.5 miles southwest of Delta. It is one of the 10 largest lime plants in the United States. It was previously owned by Continental Lime which was purchased by Graymont Lime.
Alfalfa hay is the main crop of the Delta area. Because of Delta's dry climate, the farmers are able to control the alfalfa hay's moisture when it is baled. This is very important to prohibit mold growth.
