Sugar production was Brooklyn’s most important industry in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Of various factories that once lined the East River, the former Havemeyers & Elder Refinery, later known as the Domino Sugar Refinery, is the largest and most significant structure to survive. The three conjoined properties – the Filter House, Pan House, and Finishing House – are located on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, between South 2nd Street and South 3rd Street. The Filter House, which was once the tallest structure on the Brooklyn waterfront, rises to a height of approximately 155 feet. The processing of the raw sugar began in this building, where it was mixed with water and filtered through canvas and charcoal. As foreign materials were removed, the solution flowed to the Pan House, a nine-story structure at the southwest corner of Kent Avenue and South 2nd Street. Then reduced to syrup, it was pumped to the Finishing House to be dried and graded for sale. Frederick C. Havemeyer, Jr., son of the company’s founder, first began operating a refinery in Williamsburg during 1856. Raw sugar was supplied from America’s deep south, mainly Louisiana, and the Caribbean, where it was primarily harvested by slaves. Though slavery ended in the United States in 1865, it continued in Cuba, the world’s largest exporter of raw sugar, until 1886. Most accounts of the refinery state that the Filter, Pan & Finishing House were built to replace an earlier facility that was destroyed by fire. Research, however, indicates that plans for the Filter House had already been filed with the Brooklyn Bureau of Buildings two months earlier, in November 1881. This building, as well as the Pan & Finishing House, was designed by Frederick’s eldest son, Theodore A. Havemeyer, in association with Thomas Winslow and J. E. James, who are variously listed in contemporary journals as architects and builders. Like many contemporary industrial buildings, it was designed in the American round-arch style, a variant of the German Rundbogenstil and the Romanesque Revival style. Rooted in practical needs, the new refinery was conceived to be as fireproof as possible, with iron columns, beams and girders, as well as four hundred electric lights. A large oval smokestack dominates the west façade of the Filter House, facing Manhattan. Though the base of the chimney is original, most of the section that rises above the roof was added following a major expansion during the 1920s. Planned to produce at least 1,200 tons of sugar each day, the refinery’s capacity gave the company a considerable competitive edge, allowing it to dominate the American market for several decades. This leverage also led to the creation of the Sugar Refineries Company in 1887. Originally consisting of as many as twenty firms, it was a monopoly that sought to control labor costs and prices. Renamed the American Sugar Refining Company in 1891, the “Domino” brand name was introduced in 1901. The Williamsburg refinery was sold to Tate & Lyle in 1988 and renamed the Domino Sugar Corporation in 1991. In subsequent years, the company ceased refining raw sugar at this location and the three buildings became vacant. The plant closed in 2004 and the site was acquired by C. P. C. Resources, the development arm of the Community Preservation Corporation.

The Exxon refining plant in Beaumont, Texas remains shut down in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Up to a third of the US refining capacity had been curtailed by the storm. The human impacts of Harvey have been staggering, and this disaster makes clear once again that coastal Texas and the wider Gulf region are on the frontlines of sea level rise and extreme weather heightened by climate change, as well as the toxic impacts from fossil fuel infrastructure.

Mortgage Relief Services
Mortgage Relief Service is the process of achieving change in the loan contract agreed to by the lender and the borrower. The mortgage relief services getting attention now are those designed to reduce the principle balance and or interest rate and payment on homeowners mortgages.
Homeowners that are interested in either reducing their principle balance and or interest rate and mortgage payment (whether they are delinquent on their mortgage or not) should request professional mortgage relief assistance.
Homeowners are unlikely to get such a change unless they ask, and homeowners should also make the investment required to make their case as clearly as possible and most importantly seek professional assistance to insure the most favorable outcome possible.
The stakes are very high: your house and your credit.
In most cases, the decision on mortgage relief is not made by the firm that owns the loan. It is made by a firm servicing the loan under contract to the owner. The owner could be a single lender, or it could be a group of investors who own pieces of a mortgage-backed security collateralized by a pool of loans. Every servicing company and every lender has different guidelines that they follow when it comes to signing off on mortgage relief. This is why working with a professional and experienced mortgage relief servicing company is essential.
Whoever owns the loan (whether it is a lender or a group of lenders), the servicing firm is contractually obligated to find the solution to payment problems that will minimize loss to the owner. If the lowest-cost solution is a mortgage relief agreement, that's great -- everyone involved prefers a mortgage relief agreement instead of a foreclosure. But if a foreclosure would generate lower costs for the owner, the decision will be to foreclose. The cost of foreclosure to the borrower does not enter the decision.
Yet the decision is far from cut and dried, and it can be materially affected by whether and how the borrower presents his case.
That is why homeowners faced with this prospect, whether they are delinquent or not, should request professional Mortgage Relief Assistance.

15 Interlocking Cubes 180 units
4-fold view.
I mentioned previously my intentions of refining the proportions on the “cubic mesh” compound I folded a few months back, in order to compensate for the width the paper, slight distortions in the cubes, etc. The proportions are more comfortable here.
Previously, I had described this as an “intrinsic composition,” since each cube is identical with the others. However, in light of this compound, the notion of “composition” needs clarification. The options are as follows:
a)If all of the individual frames have an “in principle” identical relationship with respect to each other, then they are not an intrinsic composition.
b)If all of the individual frames have an “in principle” identical relationship relative to a fixed central origin, then they are not an intrinsic composition.
If definition a) is used, this is not an intrinsic composition. If definition b) is used, this is an intrinsic composition. While not critically important, I am going to stipulate that the spirit in which I coined the term “intrinsic composition” uses a). Primarily, because “composition” implies multiple composed compounds which could be decomposed, but the removal of cubes here seemingly does not really qualify as a decomposition. So, I am going to state that this is not an intrinsic composition, it is simply a polyhedron compound.
With this compound, I also added in part of the “next layer” of cubes, all six of which are folded in black paper. These almost completely obscure the central yellow cube, which you can see if you look close enough. Even more so than in the previous case, the assembly of the inner edges on each cube is the more difficult feature of the design.
In principle the cube mesh can be iterated outwards endlessly. Perhaps someone will take it a bit further than I have. To do so,
Paper proportions are 2:2.5625
Pockets are q2.5:90

Citgo oil refinery in Lemont IL. While it is hardly noticible from the NS Tollway (I-355), it is massive when you're face-to-face with it's sprawling acres of refinery, rail, barges and storage tankers.

Livestock at Doug Jernigan Farms, a three-generation family farm and employer who, a few months earlier, refinanced a first of its kind in the nation, swine-turkey waste to renewable energy system (RES), with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development (RD) Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) loan guarantee in Mt. Olive, NC, Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015.
Typical systems separate methane gas for energy, solids are disposed or repurposed and liquids are cleaned. This new system addition takes the watery manure effluent to a new and as Mr. Jernigan say’s “prolific profit” producing state through savings and sales. “There is an opportunity for the farm to make money doing a good thing for the environment.”
The system handles about 75,000 gallons of swine and turkey waste effluent each day. Piped to a series of tanks, and mechanical equipment that separates solids, and liquids. The current treatment facility biologically removes ammonia nitrogen with bacteria adapted to high-strength wastewater; removes phosphorus via alkali precipitation; and reduction emissions of odorant compounds, ammonia, pathogens, and heavy metals to the environment. The water is cleaned for reuse in the swine and turkey operations that wash more manure into the cycle of the system.
The new methane reactors (under the framework of what will be a C-span structure) use an endothermic gasifier that heats the waste solids to very high temperatures to the point that they release gases. The clean methane gas will fuel an engine that turns a 300KW electrical generator producing electricity; ethanol will help fuel farm equipment, and resulting potash solids can be used or sold for agricultural fertilizer. Excess amounts of electricity, that the farms cannot use, will be sold and transmitted to the local energy company, for use by residents and businesses; renewable energy credits (REC) are sold to a different energy company.
With a system that eliminates all ammonia and other odor creating compounds, Mr. Jernigan says, “What I’m doing is good for the environment; it’s good for the farm in the respect that you’re getting rid of waste that you’re creating in a high-tech way. There’s no footprint. It’s just gone.”
Doug and Aileen are lifelong farmers and they have three grown children that work in the farm operation as well. Their farm currently operates a 21,600 finishing farm operation, an eight house turkey operation and a 250 head cow /calf operation. The farm also consists of 2,400 acres of row crop production (cotton, corn, soybeans and wheat).
Doug Jernigan’s grandfather started farming here in 1941, and he continues the tradition with his business that began in 1974.
In talking about the greater potential of this technology and what others should consider, Jernigan says, “I see it as a win-win thing.”

*The treatment system (without the methane reactor) was documented to remove, on a mass basis, approximately 99% of total suspended solids, 98% of COD, 99% of TKN, 100% ammonia, 100% odor compounds, 92% phosphorus, 95% copper, and 97% zinc from the flushed manure. Fecal coliform reductions were measured to be 99.98%
