Next time: zondag 6 december 2009, Club Endelijk Weer in Almere. Uitgebreide parkeermogelijkheden voor de deur en goed bereikbaar met het openbaar vervoer. Voor 10 Euro heb je een mooie afsluiting van je weekend!

Crater Lake is isolated from surrounding streams and rivers, thus there is no inlet or outlet to the lake. Its primary input is from annual precipitation in the region. Average annual precipitation is 168 cm (66 in); average annual snowfall is 13 m (44 ft). It took approximately 250 years for the lake to fill to today's level (~1,883 m or ~6,178 ft above sea level). The lake maintains its current level because the amount of rain and snowfall equals the evaporation and seepage rate. Lake level has varied only over a range of 5 m (16 ft) in the past 100 years.

Crown Books was founded in the Washington, D.C., metro area in 1977 by Robert Haft with money borrowed from his father, D.C. businessman Herbert Haft. The chain was organized under the umbrella of the Dart Group (not related to the current UK-based Dart Group), which also included Trak Auto, Shoppers Food Warehouse, Total Beverage, Dart Drug, and Combined Properties. Known for low prices, the chain gained fame in the 1980s and early 1990s for its clever advertising campaigns (such as Robert Haft sitting on large stacks of books with the caption "Books Cost Too Much, That's Why I Opened Crown Books.") At the beginning, Crown Books day-to-day operations were managed by Jose Gonzales (Vice President of Operations) and Jeanne Herrick (Vice President of Merchandising). Once the decision was made to expand into other areas the dynamic of Mr. Gonzales & Ms. Herrick was replicated into the California Market with the addition of Steve Young & Miriam Bass. Later Crown made the decision to enter the Chicago Market and that entry was managed by Richard Lowe & Rhonda Branch.
Crown Books grew rapidly, from its single store in 1977 to a regional chain of 196 stores at its height in 1993, close on the heels of Borders and poised to become the nation's second-largest book chain. While Classic Crown Books stores, which afforded customers between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet (280 m2) of book selection, had been the backbone of the company since its founding in 1977, they were gradually phased out in favor of the larger, more competitive, superstore format adopted by the company in 1990. Stocking up to 80,000 titles--10 times the number carried in Classic Crown stores--Super Crown Books locations supplemented the Classic Crown holdings with a large line of greeting cards, games, computer software, and an assortment of gift items. Each superstore provided between 12,000 and 35,000 square feet (3,300 m2) of retail space. Robert Haft showed great foresight in planning Crown Software in 1986, but his side projects made him late to the superstore scene which competitors Barnes & Noble and Borders had begun.
In 1993, the company was the third largest book chain in the United States, after Barnes & Noble and Borders, and had stores in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Chicago, Philadelphia, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Seattle and Portland. With the advent of its Super Crown Books locations, as well as the boom in sales volume of competitors like Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Books-a-Million, the company reevaluated its Classic Crown locations and determined that several of the smaller stores would become increasingly unprofitable as the trend toward larger bookstores continued. In 1993, under the guidance of Glenn E. Hemmerle, president and CEO of the company from October 1992 through June 1994, Crown prepared the financial groundwork for closing several of its smaller stores.
A bitter divorce between Herbert Haft and his wife tore the family apart, and pitted Crown Books founder Robert Haft against his father. When Herbert tried to replace Robert as the head of Crown Books, the situation exploded and their back-and-forth exploits regularly made the front page of the Washington Post over the months between the fall of 1993 and the summer of 1994, becoming a regional media sensation. After Robert's firing, upper management positions were abandoned and refilled with some regularity, draining the company of both management skills and cash.
The family feud playing out among Haft family members appeared close to resolution by May 1994. However, four months later a jury awarded Robert M. Haft $34.1 million in compensation for a breach of contract by Dart Group and Crown Books. Several lawsuits and countersuits were filed by other members of the Haft family as each jockeyed for a controlling interest in family-controlled companies. By 1996 Crown found itself listed as co-plaintiff in a lawsuit brought against Herbert H. Haft by the Dart Group charging fraud and breach of fiduciary duty with regard to business transactions made during the course of Haft's divorce and resulting power struggle. Interestingly, Crown had been named as a co-defendant in similar lawsuits filed by shareholder groups as early as 1993.
Fortunately, a Standstill Order was entered in Delaware court in 1995, restricting certain relevant actions of the Dart Corporation until such time as all legal matters were resolved; by mid-1997 a conditional settlement had been reached with Herbert H. Haft whereby Haft would relinquish his position and voting rights in the Dart Group in exchange for approximately $41 million.

Karlštejn Castle (Czech: hrad Karlštejn; German: Burg Karlstein) is a large Gothic castle founded 1348 CE by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor-elect and King of Bohemia. The castle served as a place for safekeeping the Imperial Regalia as well as the Bohemian/Czech crown jewels, holy relics, and other royal treasures. Located about 30 km southwest of Prague above the village of the same name, it is one of the most famous and most frequently visited castles in the Czech Republic.
Founded in 1348, the construction works were directed by the later Karlštejn burgrave Vitus of Bítov, but there are no records of the builder himself. Some historian speculate that Matthias of Arras may be credited with being the architect, but he had already died by 1352. It is likely that there was not a progressive and cunning architect, but a brilliant civil engineer who dextrously and with a necessary mathematical accuracy solved technically exigent problems that issued from the emperor's ideas and requests. Instead, Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV personally supervised the construction works and interior decoration. A little known fact is that the Emperor hired Palatinate region labour for the remaining work. Construction was finished nearly twenty years later in 1365 when the "heart" of the treasury – the Chapel of the Holy Cross situated in the Great tower – was consecrated.
Following the outbreak of the Hussite Wars, the Imperial Regalia were evacuated in 1421 and brought via Hungary to Nuremberg. In 1422, during the siege of the castle, Hussite attackers used biological warfare when Prince Sigismund Korybut used catapults to throw dead (but not plague-infected) bodies and 2000 carriage-loads of dung over the walls, apparently managing to spread infection among the defenders.
Later, the Bohemian crown jewels were moved to the castle and were kept there for almost two centuries, with some short breaks. The castle underwent several reconstructions: in late Gothic style after 1480, in Renaissance style in the last quarter of the 16th century. In 1487 the Big tower was damaged by fire and during the 16th century there were several adaptations. During the Thirty Years' War in 1619, the coronation jewels and the archive were brought to Prague, and in 1620 the castle was turned over to Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor. After having been conquered in 1648 by Swedes, it fell in disrepair. Finally, a neo-Gothic reconstruction was carried out by Josef Mocker between 1887 and 1899, giving the castle its present look.
The nearby village was founded during the construction of the castle and bore its name until it was renamed to Buda in the wake of the Hussite Wars. Renamed to Budňany in the 18th century, it was merged with Poučník and called Karlštejn (Beroun District). There is a golf club named after the castle nearby.
The castle was built upon a promontory from the south side of Kněží hora hill, divided from it by a narrow sag. The first gate, a square, two-storey tower with a tall hip roof, stood above a moat at the western slope of the promontory. It was connected with the rampart traverse by means of a small portal. The traverse was protected by battlement and divided by a covered bastion in the middle. The second gate led to the Burgrave House (Purkrabství) courtyard. Drawbridges closed both entrances. The Burgrave House formed the Karlštejn settlement, it was fortified with a two meters wide rampart, the Well Tower stood slightly lower. In the burgraviate's rampart a third gate was staved - the main entrance into the inner castle.
The core of the castle consisted of three parts placed on three levels-differentiated terraces; every level express different importance. On the lowest terrace there stood the Imperial Palace (Císařský palác), above it there was the Marian Tower (Mariánská věž) and the Big Tower (Velká věž) stood the highest. The Palace is a single-tract building, about 12,5 m wide and 46 m long, closed in the east by a semi-cylinder tower, had – aside of the cellar dug in the rock – the ground floor and two walled floors; the third floor under the roof was built from half-timbered work. The ground space is open to the courtyard, the rest was occupied by a granary. Three rooms form the first floor; largest is the central room, the so-called Knight Hall (Rytířský sál). The emperor inhabited the second floor of the palace; the floor was divided into four rooms by self-supporting partitions. A spiral staircase connected it with the third floor in which – according to the record from the 16th century – there was a residence of the "empress with her female retinue". The layout and equipment of the second and third floor was approximately the same: bedrooms on the eastern side, then the stateroom, a hall and the rooms in the west.
The central area of the 60m high and separately fortified (4–7,5 m thick walls) Big Tower is the Chapel of the Holy Cross (kaple sv. Kříže); it has no analogy in concept elsewhere in the world. In the safety of the chapel, behind four doors with nineteen locks to each key was guarded independently, the valuable documents of the state archive were kept along with the symbols of the state power – the Imperial Regalia, later the Czech Crown Jewels.
The Well Tower (Studniční věž), being the logistical centerpiece the castle could not function without, was the first part of the castle to be built. Miners were brought in from the mining town of Kutná Hora, however, water was not encountered even after the depth of the well was 70 meters, well below the level of the nearby Berounka river. An underground channel was therefore excavated to bring in water from a nearby stream, yielding a water column of 25 meters, sufficient to last for several months. The reservoir had to be manually refilled roughly twice a year by opening a floodgate. Considering the significant strategic weakness incurred to the castle by the lack of an independent water source, the existence of the underground channel was a state secret known only to the Emperor himself, and the burgrave. The only other persons aware of its existence were the miners, who were however allegedly massacred on their way from the castle after the construction, leaving no survivors.
The story of three apparently similar Papermate ball point pens, part 1 (part 2 can be seen here and part 3 here). The one on the left made in West Germany, the other two in the USA. As I couldn't get a new Papermate refill I bought the two unbranded refills. They fit easily into the pen on the right but they jam in the middle one. The inside mechanism must be different in the pen on the left as they won't fit in at all. I bought Schneider Express 225 refills – but with exactly the same results.
The one on the left worked fine with a Papermate refill but I mislaid that pen so bought the other two on eBay (I didn't mean to buy two but I bid for both of them and got both) One of the "new" pens would not work with the unbranded refills I bought and, when I found the original pen, that wouldn't work with the new refills either. I got some Schneider Express 225 refills but with the same result. – Hey ho 😟
Go now to part 2.

I couldn't really bear to write much on these pretty paper. But now I also don't really want them either...I prefer the more subtle filofax refills. I have tons of different designs too.

I refilled my black Pilot Varsity with Noodler's Heart of Darkness. This pen makes a fantastic eyedropper, and all it took was a pair of needlenose pliers.
I didn't rinse the nib, and you can see in the top of the photo how much lighter the Pilot black ink is than the Noodler's HoD.

My little collection of AGFA Karats, comprising one of each of the main 11 models made from 1936 to 1957. Karats are fascinating cameras to collect. However, the early 'Karat Kassett 12' ones are not as easily useable today as the later '36' models which take standard 35 mm film cassettes. The later ones have CRF focussing too, which makes them still good users. Folded up, they are quite compact - but also relatively heavy.
Price differences should also be born in mind. For example, the top-spec'd pre-WW2 Karat with F3.5 Solinar lens and Compur Rapid shutter cost about 10 Pnds here in Australia, and about the same in Britain. However, post- WW2 things were greatly different. Now the Karat 36 models were not sold in the UK because they were just too darnn expensive. Here in Australia they were available, but according to a 1951 catalogue a Karat 36 with F2.8 Xenar cost 73 Pnds and an F2 version with Xenon cost all of 79 Pnds. No point in me trying to translate Oz currency 60 years down the line into whatever your local currency is or was. Better I just quote some other prices from that 1951 catalogue, so you can do your own comparisons! So, a Kodak Retina 11 with F2 Xenon cost 74 Pnds, a Futura with F2 Evar cost 60 Pnds, and a .Leica 111f with F3.5 Elmar was 114 Pnds.
If you acquire one of the early Karats and want to try it out, don't despair that the Karat/Rapid Kassettes are no longer available from AGFA.. The film itself is exactly the same as that used in Kodak-style cartridges. So long as you have a couple of empty 'Kassetten', all it takes is a bit of cunning refilling under the bedclothes of modern 35mm film into one of same. Then you're all set to turn back time with your early Karat. The main thing to remember is that it's a 'pusher' system, with the 35mm film being pushed from a donor kassette into an empty take-up one. So, no rewind - and for your next film you just move the now-empty Kassette to the other side. Probably sounds as clear as mud, but it's not as difficult as it sounds!
All AGFAs have potential problems with the factory's 'Bayer Green Grease' hardening over the years, resulting in either stiff or totally stuck controls, usually focussing. Karat 36s are the most likely culprits, beause of their more complex CRF setup. But, don't despair - things can usually be freed up with something like lighter fluid dripped into the edge of the focussing ring, or maybe CRC Electronic Aerosol Cleaner (NOT CRC Lubricant!) squirted there. Both should have the effect ot temporarily freeing things up, and they both evaporate totally so no nasty stuff is left to taint lens surfaces or shutter irises. As things free up, you should apply more drips/squirts and keep moving the focussing control to allow the stuff to work in.
When you're happy things are now moving freely, don't pat yourself on the back yet and go and raid the fridge for a congratulationary coldie. If you leave the Karat now as it is, by the following day its controls will likely have re-stuck themselves as the effects of the lighter fluid/CRC are short-lived. You now need to apply some form of synthetic lubricant, in small amounts because you don't want it getting onto lens surfaces or those irises. A few drips around that same edge of the focussing control should do it, turning and returning the control to get the lube worked in. Don't be suprised if the following day the control has become slightly stiffer again. Just add a few more drops/squirts of the lube, and keep moving the control ring. I've never needed to do this more than a second time, and trust me - ALL those 11 Karats still work perfectly!

The other day while I was at work my partner stayed home to deal with the cable people......
So I have this ad on my desk and when the cable guy came to fix the cable he asked my roommate if I was gay? Myself Being the other roommate.
And I was like wow................
He just walked through a hallway with nothing but pictures of Queens, looked up and saw rows of wigs on heads that have painted faces and you walked past my sewing corner with fully dressed maniqins and Sketches and drawings everywhere, hot glue gun refills, glitter and rhine stones everywhere...................
Is he gay? he said he thought about it and then said: I think
Maybe just a little?
So what I did was take a picture of a picture and on my camera this picture looked so real, like I was there.......
All I can say is WOOF!
Refill. Klaas, Santito en San, de drijvende krachten achter dit nieuwe concept voelen goed aan wat partypeople verlangen op een zondagmiddag/avond uitgaan. Een mooie line-up op een intieme locatie. Jammer van de lage opkomst. Volle bak was zeker verdiend geweest.
